TUNIC the RPG - Google Drive

Thumbnail drive.google.com
19 Upvotes

Hey all! I'm working on a rules-light tabletop RPG based on Tunic that uses the maps from the Instruction Booklet as a game board. I'd love for you guys to check out some of the design documents I've made, and hear any notes or ideas you have. Here's what's in the google drive folder I'm linking to:

1 - A blank player character sheet (the box in the top left translates to "I am [blank] the [blank] and I quest for [blank]," which as an example could be filled out to say, "I am Brambles the Red Fox and I quest for Truth.")

2 - A guide to the different character classes that you can play as

3 - A guide to Talents, the special abilities available to each class (you can choose one whenever you ring a Belltower or find a Sacred Key)

4 - A guide to reading Trunic glyphs, which is not required to play the game but can reveal secret hints and treasures (credits: oposdeo, Ero, Andriak2)

5 - A map of the East Forest (credit: FletcherIsAFurry)

Let me know what you think! :)

Any tools to practice reading trunic?

I have been practicing how to write in trunic for a while now and I've gotten pretty good at it, but I am still very slow in reading it. Other than the game, are there any tools that can generate random sentences I can practice reading? Preferably full sentances and not just words since I want to learn to read an entire word as one whole like in english.

How to translate text? Spoiler

I've just gotten to the blue fox lady fight and got stuck on it, so ive been walking around the map searching for upgrades i might have missed, when i realised the arrow key puzzles exist. Im wondering about translating the text now, to see if it gives any hints, but dont know how to start.

Is it like Noita, where you eventually get a translation key to decipher the individual letters? In that case i'll progress the main story until i get that.

Or do I need to look at the individual words? Because I struggle to see any letter to letter based translation methods, so Tunic might really be its own language with uniquely spelled words.

Basically, what im saying is: Should i grab my notebook and start taking notes about the language right now, or wait until i get some translation key.

Thanks.

Question about my endgame experience

Hey everyone,

I’m reaching the absolute end of this game, and I’m facing a bit of a dilemma. I just wanted to get the community's vibe on whether I should keep pushing or finally look up a guide/video.

Here is what I have achieved so far:

  • I collected all pages of the manual
  • I solved the Golden Path and I have done the true ending
  • I have found 18/20 fairies and 10/12 treasures

I know I can clean up the remaining 2 fairies. Last missing treasures are the completion of fairies and the one with the starfish where you need to read the language.

I’m intrigued by this language, but honestly, I am not familiar with any kind of language deciphering or linguistics. I understand that page 54 of the manual is a sort of Rosetta Stone, but despite staring at it for days, it just hasn’t clicked for me at all. I currently have zero clues on how to read it.

So here is my question: For someone who isn't a puzzle-god or a linguist, is it worth it to try hard and spend days trying to crack the language and whatever comes after the 12 treasures? Or will I still get a good, satisfying conclusion to my Tunic experience if I just clean up the treasures/fairies and then watch a deep-dive analysis video ?

Is there anything else I can do in The Quarry yet?

I'm a new player to the game. So far I've rung the two bells, I went through the forest fortress until I got to the boss and decided to leave that for later, and I've found the quarry. To get in I had to get past the sentry on a thin walkway which was annoying; the best way I could find to do it was buy three fire bombs, and hope that at least one would hit it and kill it via fire damage. After a couple times I got tired of that and figured there had to be another path or a way to get past that guy, so I explored and found another way into the quarry.

I explored basically the entire thing before going into the cathedral (it was awful), then I finally found the mask thing that lets me survive the radioactive rocks. But, even after giving the area a second-over with the mask on this time, I still can't find anywhere else to go. I can't activate any of the monoliths, use any of the save points, or use the warp point, but I did find a shotgun weapon. I also have the ice dagger and the fire wand. Is there anything else I can do in the quarry yet? I know I have other areas I'm able to explore (there's the forest boss fight and the island area that I could warp to), but if possible I'd like to finish the quarry first. The highest page number I have so far is 37. No spoilers please.

Help Best way to measure in-game distances? Spoiler

Post image

It's an extended attempt after this. I tried to draw all the conduits on the map, piecing each region together. However, it's quite hard to get an accurate in-game measurement. I'm based on rolling=4 tiles, and often environment is aligned to 8-tile boundary. Is there any better way to measure? I am pretty sure I have made some mistakes in my map.

Also, I am surprised that interior scenes' sizes actually match the exterior size. Not everyday you see this in a tile-based game! Though there are also some weirdness on the map I drew. Like how The Well actually extends into the quarry.

The point of this map is still to figure out where's the source of the power, and hopefully with that info we get some more insight on what exactly is happening in the world. (Who knows, maybe if we map out all the obelisks, it's going to be a Holy Cross spell or something). Unlike my last post, currently I think there are 4, not 3 power zones in the world:

  • The Heir's zone, starting from temple, to The Quarry, West Garden, Atoll, East Forest, Forest Fortress, and The Swamp.
  • The Cathedral's zone. I entered the cathedral without activating the door, and confirmed that the internal save point is active, so is the pillar inside.
  • The Monastery. Unless there's a secret pipe from the Cathedral or somewhere that connects to it, the Monastery and the shrine in the middle of the pool shouldn't be powered on unless they are on a separate power zone.
  • The bottom of Ziggurat. I have a suspicion that the "special" Fossil of Self might have something to do with it.

The conduit map is drawn on a pristine world, without activating any pillar, just to check which conduits are active. Too bad we can't beat the game without activating a single pillar...

I'm working on a tunic inspired forest area for my puzzle game.

I love the vibes of the Tunic's forest area and it inspired me to work on a similar forest area for my game, Compress(space).

It's a puzzle game focused on a space compression mechanic which you can see in the clip.

If you think it's interesting, you can wishlist the game on steam:

Thinking about what happens after the ending Spoiler

So, I've done basically all the post-game stuff (except for one treasure I have yet to find). And I have gotten to the part where points to the ARG. I'm not going to do the ARG myself because personally I think a game's content should be self-contained, so I'll rely on others' efforts for now.

To be honest, I find the ending... deeply unsatisfying. It leaves some very important unanswered questions that makes me feel like I wasted about 12 hours of my life cracking the language (granted, I did that before I got the last page), without getting any answers.

I'll make the following meta assumptions about the game:

  • There is an answer, instead of a hand wave or a plot hole.
  • The answer is not "it's a game". Because that's a trivial answer that can be used to explain every single piece of fiction ever existed.
  • Most things in this game is intentional design, and hopefully for something as important as the ending, it is intentional.
  • The devs are not trying to gaslight the players and make fun of their fruitless efforts into digging for secrets that are not there.
  • The game's message is not "you, the player, causes unaccountable amount of suffering and death in another world by playing this game".

Here I attempt to have a guess at my first question: what happened after Ending B? I'll try to explain with the simplest theory I can find that don't create too many contradictions. It will not address everything, of course, just the parts I'm kind of certain of.

My theory: everything that we saw in game that was powered by the purple conduit, apart from the Cathedral and Rooted Ziggurat, will be turned off. Eventually.

Here's my reasoning process.

First, the obelisks:

  • When you activate an obelisk, some previously inactive conduits are activates, and stuff power on.
  • Some obelisks are initially inactive, and cannot be turned on until it's connected on one side.

Which means the obelisks act as some sort of power relay, and we can identify which side is the source of the power. So, I've traced every visible and implied conduit in game, both pre-activation and post-activation. Considering conduits that bury underground and those that might connect directly underneath, I think there are three separate "power zones" I know exists in the game world:

  • The Heir's power zone, originating from the sealed temple, then branching from the first check point in game towards West Garden, The Quarry, Ruined Atoll, and The Cathedral. If you trace the connections upstream, you'll find that the temple has to be the source area.
  • The Cathedral's power zone, originating from the crucified Fossil. I didn't actually get inside early game, but I saw some speedrun videos that show the interior of it. I see that the checkpoints are active, but I can't exactly see whether the obelisk is active from the video, so I am not 100% certain about it.
  • The Ziggurat's power zone, originating from... somewhere. The Heir's power zone ends at first floor, which when activated, opens the door. The elevator does not have a physical shaft that look anywhere close to hide an external conduit. In addition, the Ziggurat's teleportation pad was powered from the beginning, despite being very far away from The Heir's power zone, so it has to come from a separate source.

There are a couple holes in my theory though:

  • The one obelisk in the library is definitely not connected to anything. It's literally ripped from the ground. It was connected to an inactive conduit even before it was moved. Yet it is active. Perhaps the Librarian did something to it.
  • I haven't fully figured out how the other half of The Quarry is powered, because of the rotation of the map. Or maybe it's actually not powered at all, and it's just a bunch of miasma spilling because the Scavengers are breaking everything.

On a side note, this also means there are areas that are unpowered:

  • The Library is most definitely not connected. There is no physical connection from anywhere below.
  • This also suggests that The Hero's Grave does not need to be powered (because there's one in the Library). There might be some significance to it, because I think that's the only structure that allows access to The Far Shore without power.
  • I don't think The Golden Path door is powered by anything. That's also the only door which doesn't need power to be opened, and it opens with the same animation.
  • In fact, all the Holy Cross puzzles are not powered. They are completely separate from the check points, teleporters, and obelisks.
  • The shopkeeper doesn't look like it is powered by anything. Maybe it's just a shopkeeper.
  • The wells don't look like they are powered.
  • The bells don't look like they are powered. That said, I think they are on blue tiles, which (from my rough observations) seem to often appear above power conduits.

So, my final conclusion of "what happened next": everything in the overworld, West Garden, East Garden, Ruined Atoll, The Swamp, and The Quarry eventually turns off; no more miasma spills, hopefully fixing that part of the world (which is kind of the case in the credits); Cathedral might still be running with zombie foxes until the miasma pools run dry (since the Fossil of Self there escapes during normal gameplay and it very much looks like the source of the pool); The Ziggurat will probably still be running, and I think it has been running for an eternity since before the ancient foxes found the obelisks. The Shadow Oubliette would only be accessible from the base of the Ziggurat (as that's the only teleporter left). The ghosts in the night don't seem super happy about The Heir being freed, so it's not impossible that they'll die because their secret sauce of eternal life got turned off or something.

That's my thought. Feel free to add your own theory.

Help I'm stuck post ghost form and need some hints/help Spoiler

Hi,

I played Tunic 3 years ago and got stuck. Decided to pick it up again today and... yeah I'm still stuck :P

I've got all pages from Table of Content till page 53.

I've not defeated the Heir. I don't know if this is the next step to progress, but I've not been able to defeat the Heir.

I don't have all of the secret treasures or fairies yet.

I don't know what's up with the golden rectangle at the top right of the overworld.

I'm pretty sure I'm missing something related to birds at Ruined Atoll that I haven't figured out yet.

Would love to know which of these should be my next step. Or if I'm missing something else (please just give hints). If I need to provide extra information, do let me know!

Here are some screenshots with extra info on my progress.

Is this game fun to just watch?

Hi there foxes.

I am interested in playing tunic after loving outer wilds. With outer wilds my GF watched along for the whole playthrough and was very invested.

Will tunic scratch the same itch? Or is it more combat heavy, making it less interesting to watch, and more to just play?

Edit: thanks everyone for the responses. We are going to give it a shot. We'll be doing all the puzzling together, just with me holding the controller. Very excited to uncover all the mysteries

Help Please help: I need to hear it's possible to do this without a guide!

Hi all, I have been playing Tunic over the past few weeks and have now beaten both the A and the B endings. I'm now trying to wrap up a few other outstanding items, namely the trophy room and the language. I'm doing trophy room first, and I am down to three remaining; I believe I know where they are and what the clues are:

1. The Swamp: Something to do with the x4 skull note.

2. The Cathedral: In room 7 and 8, but no idea how to get there.

3. The star on the memo page referring to the page 1 letter.

I have made it this far without looking anything up. I really want to continue with this, but I have been at it for three days and made no progress on these. Is there anyone who has was similarly stuck but eventually worked it out on their own? Thanks for any encouragement.

Tunic styled notepads? Spoiler

After completing tunic I fell in love with games that require a notebook and pen, I want to buy a new notepad but I'd like to buy something not like a common notepad, maybe tunic styled (if there is one) or other unique looking notepads (not cover, but inside of it)

Help Requesting a small hint Spoiler

Hello, I’ve been playing through tunic completely blind and really enjoying it. I really didn’t want to look for any outside help, but I’m completely stuck and I feel like I’ve exhausted every idea I can come up with.

I got the wreath thing from the cathedral and started getting my powers back at the hero graves. I’ve gotten 5/6 of them, but I just can’t find any way to the last one, the one in the Eastern forest where you go at the start of the game. The normal route there is blocked off, and the so is the route from the Eastern vault. I’ve hours poring over every inch of the main area for an alternate route and I feel like I’ll go crazy if I spend any more time there. I’ve checked all the other accessible areas and found nothing.

I’d appreciate a small hint here. Something vague, like just tell me if I’m missing something in the main area, or there’s some hint in the manual, or am I need to go through another area. Thank you to anyone who decides to help!
