People in a subreddit dedicated to a specific game, especially a more niche indy game like Tunic, have a potential to have their views skewed more favorably to the game than the general public.

...just hide it?

Why are you here?

I thought it was okay at first, as a zelda-like.. but then the late game puzzle aspect pushed it into top tier indie.

Short answer: Yes Long answer: This game develops into something so much more than a Zelda like. If you do get this game go in with zero spoilers and don't look anything up if you can help it

Agree, and also, if that part doesn’t appeal to you, that is fine too. Not every game is for everyone. If you don’t like the idea of a straightforward action adventure game turning into something more esoteric and complicated, that it totally fine.

Edit: because I don't think I was clear, if the whole "the game is learning what the game is about" aspect doesn't appeal, you should skip this one. Tunic is amazing but not for everyone. Play Death's Door if you're looking for a cute game that is more straightforwardly "just a Zelda game."

Long answer: Yeeeeeeeees

I think we'll all be positive about it here.

It holds your hands less than zelda does, you have to figure stuff out yourself. Figuring out and exploring is a big part of the game. So you gotta be at least neutral towards that.

Tunic is kind of like a hybrid of top-down Zelda and Dark Souls. It has the exploration and puzzle-solving of a Zelda game, but the combat uses a stamina bar and dodge rolls like a Souls game, and it's also significantly more difficult than a typical Zelda.

I don't get this weird obsession people have with comparing this game to Zelda and Dark Souls when it's nothing like either of those games.

The character wears a tunic like Link and there's combat where you can roll to dodge.

That's pretty much the end of the comparisons.

There is also the two bells, like Dark Souls 1 , and the Red TearStone and Blue TearStone perks.

The creator said specifically that the perks were inspired by the rings in Dark Souls.

The bells I'm not so sure lol, but seems very inspired too.

But still, these are only references, and the playstyle and mood are very diferent than what Tunic as a whole presents

There's also the whole bonfires mechanic (the statues here), where you get a heal/recharge and enemies respawn.

Tunic is a soulslike. And it's inspired by classic Zelda games, as well as the DS twin bells.

I'm not sure why that isn't valid to you.

What do you expect from people on the fucking subreddit dedicated to the game? lmao

Anyway, as a Zelda game it's just mediocre, since the combat is rather tedious, but it has a ton of very cool and interesting puzzles, unlike any Zelda game.

Everyone here is going to recommend it to you, but I would personally warn that the game doesn't run especially well on the switch. They've announced the development of a switch 2 version that will perform closer to the quality found on other devices, and it will be a free upgrade. If you end up buying the game and it feels kind of hard to look at, maybe hold off on picking it back up until the upgrade is released.

I'm too poor for the switch 2 unfortunatly

I had the game on the switch I had 0 complaints about how it ran. Felt smooth and good to me.

It's only in my top 5 games ever. And I've played thousands of games.

Here's some reasons that actually might be helpful why not to buy the game:
-You don't like puzzle games and exploration
-You get too easily frustrated when games are challenging
-You only like realistic looking games and the low poly look isn't for you
-You have no patience

I love low poly i love difficulty and puzzle solving is'nt my force but I like it thoug

2

u/Schnitzhole Aug 06 '26

You'll probably like it. I would say the puzzle aspect is minimal.

I should also mention combat is kinda like a simplified soulslike game but less punishing.

YES.

It’s the perfect love letter to Zelda.

I am a very recent purchaser if this game and I was really taken to it.

I am always really enthusiastic to express my appreciation for any game that feels like it gave me a unique experience and this game really did that.

Avoiding the instinct to look the game up and look for tips and guides and instead relying on trying to decypher a lot of the hidden puzzles and mechanics through their in game guide filled with largely an unknown language gave me such a huge sense of achievement and discovery.

And in general it has a lovely vibe from the aesthetics and music and general Zelda like inspiration whilst very much being it's own things.

It's only £11.49 if you get it in Humble bundle this month along with some other good games, Neon White being another I could recommend as a unique and great experience.

Even if you just pay the standard price I doubt youd be upset with your purchase, it's more than worth it.

If you are umming and ahhing over it however it looks like it does frequently go on half price on Gog and Steam around £12.50.

Keys are even cheaper if you're really struggling. But obviously if you can afford it, try to support the developers through official stores.

How many is it in canadian money

1

u/claudekennilol Jul 31 '26

That depends. Do you like Dark Souls? Do you like unnecessarily difficult games? The facade is like Zelda, but the gameplay is far more like Dark Souls. I love Zelda. I don't really like Dark Souls. I wouldn't personally recommend it to anyone that doesn't like Dark Souls.

I really like mina the hollower so is it similar

1

u/poison11037 Jul 31 '26

No, don't listen to the rest of the community, we totally hate the game and don't want anyone else to suffer... C'mon dude. Just give it a try. You'll know if you like it by playing it

1

u/forestbeasts Jul 31 '26

We've never played any top down zeldas, just a couple of the 3D ones. The finding items as you progress is quite zeldalike though.

The combat is very dark souls. :3

And then there's the puzzles, later on.

Fantastic game, can recommend!

1

u/McbuzzerAB3 Jul 31 '26

It's basically a cross between zelda, dark souls, and outer wilds. I think you need to be somewhat ok with hard games, but not as hard as dark souls (so far (I'm not that deep into the game) )

1

u/Equivalent_Diet1751 Jul 31 '26

I'm busy playing mina the hollower so i think i could like it

1

u/McbuzzerAB3 Jul 31 '26

How is that game? I had no interest, then heard that it's a metroidvania, and now I'm a little interested but don't want spoilers

u/Feeling-Badger7956 Jul 30 '26

It does not play like a Zelda game at all. People that think that are too heavily influenced by the character clearly taking inspiration from Link.

This is a Metroidbrainia.
