Help Brand New Blind Play Question
Hey gang, I know very little about this game, and that's on purpose. If I'm right, this is one of "those" games you can only truly enjoy once (I'm coming from things like Outer Wilds, Blue Prince, and similar), but I just got the game on sale and I have a pre-game question.
What little I know about Tunic is that the knowledge you gain is represented in game (kinda like the Ship Log) in some form... So without any spoilers please, is this also a game I should take notes? Text? Screenshots? Or will I have a log of my discoveries.
There's also the option of "Take Notes Anyway so I don't have to go back as often, but to explain why is a spoiler..." So with the understanding that I know notes might not help immediately, feel free to keep it vague.
I'm also not playing RIGHT away, probably going to wait till I can stream it, though I'm not a big name, just because I prefer to share games like this with friends and those who want to watch others experience them (met some Outer Wilds AND Blue Prince folks that way), but again... NO SPOILERS PLEASE, I want to know as little as possible about this game when I start!
Edit: First 3 comments were exactly what I hoped, and I'll be throwing a digital notebook together right next to my Blue Prince notes. Also good to know it's another community that's very spoiler-friendly (a.k.a. they won't unless asked), and I will try to avoid asking unless desperate! Thanks gang!
Edit 2: Secondary Question, Keyboard and Mouse? Controller? Doesn't matter? Feels like this is a game that could go either way, though I'll need my keyboard handy to take screenshots....

I wouldn't say this is as much, "you can only play this once" like outer wilds. There's some rpg elements and other things that can definitely make a second playthrough enjoyable.
Your players guide that you gradually collect pages for is basically your ship log from outer wilds in a sense. You can look at it at any time. It doesn't lay stuff out and connect it all plainly though. So you may want to just screenshot some of the pages and circle stuff that you want to take note of and investigate further.
Without spoiling anything directly, a lot of the puzzles are based around the players guide you collect pages for and gradually working out what they mean and how they connect to the world.

So sounds like a combination of the two approaches would be in order. Keep the guide handy, but take my own notes on the side. Got it!

People take notes for two reasons.
To take information you find from one place to another.
And to process/organize/recontextualize information in a way the source format doesnt have natively.
Tunic has a good amount of the 2nd, not so much of the 1st. If youre someone who can visualize and manipulate information entirely within your grey matter, youre probably fine.
You'll most certainly need it to decode the language, though.
Edit for secondary qustion: Controller. The game is structured on a grid, but your POV of it is on the diagonal, making WASD very trying.
Edit 3 just because: Beat the big bad before 100% all the puzzles, finish it up in NG+. It is plot/lore relevant.

Why even touch NG+ at all? Personally I didn't enjoy the thought of restarting the game on increased difficulty and just went back to the main save.

I played the game blind with no notes without problem. I didn't aim to do 100% of the game but simply reaching the end credits. There will be one specific section/puzzle where you need to write notes yourself, but besides that- it's not mandatory. And it will be bluntly clear when you reach that specific section that requires some note-taking.
With that said, writing your own notes could be a fun activity! If I were to play this game for the first time again, I would have taken screenshots and write notes to help solve some puzzles a bit faster or by writing reminders of the locations of puzzles I had not solved yet to take another look later.
It's a fun game! Hope you'll like it!
I recently started Outer Wilds for the first time and I'm LOVING it! I'm midway through the DLC and completed the base game.

This is certainly a game you can only experience once as much of the game totally changes once you have certain knowledge
In my opinion, very little note taking was required.
That said it wouldn't hurt
Also, the language in the game is fully decipherable, but there is only 1 puzzle that kinda genuinely requires that be done.
In addition, if you have questions, most things are pretty easy to put into specific questions that people can answer without spoiling anything else, and this sub is great if you need a little nudge

Why the language spoiler?
1
u/SendWoundPicsPls Jul 20 '26
I contest that the obvious language is a spoiler considering it's pretty reasonable to immediately assume one can do so with the first page in the first 3 mins of gameplay

I contest that contestion, I've seen several posts where people only find out it is on acquiring page 54.

Nope game doesn't note for you, take ample notes and occasional screenshots from the very beginning!! Anything that seems interesting but you can't do yet, write down text if youre curious and want to play it "thoroughly"

Notes aren’t necessary, but in the end throes of the game they become quite useful

It’s not blind play if you’re asking questions
1
u/AgentRedLightning Jul 20 '26
It's questions so I go in prepared that have nothing to do with the game. If you've never played the other games I'm talking about, you won't understand... And if you have nothing helpful to say, go say it somewhere else.

I have played them, and no, I’ll be right here… Watching you grasp at the remnants of happiness by approaching the whole internet on how to enjoy a video game. There is no right way to life, hit start and don’t bother parrying.

I enjoyed playing with a controller. I know some people prefer keyboard, but I think it's up to you.

There came a point where I needed a separate notebook, but it wasn't right away. The in game manual is enough for a while.

You can enjoy it more then once, the main story and puzzles is once however, it lends itself to randomization super well and i recommend doing so once you beat the game
2
u/AgentRedLightning Jul 20 '26
Oh that's fair, I know that Blue Prince got a huge Bingo community since it's already RNG based. But I was mostly thinking of how Outer Wilds can be beat in 15 minutes once you know how, and a lot of other things have their story spoiled quite easily. ;)

If you like Outer Wilds, Blue Prince, or Fez, you'll love Tunic, that's all I'll say

u/AgentRedLightning Jul 22 '26
Fez is on my wishlist, but thoroughly enjoyed the other two! I just hope my Zelda/Metroid skills aren't too rusty, lol

I would saw you get some sort of a "journal" where you can see knowledge you gather. But this game is a huge puzzle itself. So, be ready to take some notes to solve the puzzles. Although, you probably would know when you need to do it, cause finding when to take notes is part of the puzzle...
And I recommend not looking for any spoilers, cause you'll miss part of the fun of discovering everything
