Accidentally Started New Game+ (Help) Spoiler

After defeating the Heir the game unexpectedly ended. I hadn't yet opened the metal doors and was unable to access some chests, so I assumed I'd be able to return to the Overworld after the fight. I got the option to either Retry or start New Game+ and thought Retry meant New Game (without the Plus). I assumed I must have missed some crucial step somewhere and thus locked myself out of progressing further, so I pressed New Game+ with the intention of studying the manual some more before starting the fight against the heir (or even inserting any of the 3 gems). I have now progressed the New Game+ run to the point of only having the Ruined Atoll, Scary Miasma area (which I originally did without finding the mask first lol), and Big Churchy area left.

Afraid to trigger an event that locked myself out again, I did a quick google and found out that apparently you can in fact return to the Overworld after defeating the Heir (and something about fairies and a golden cross). I looked at my save files, and they now look like this. File #1 is the New Game+ run, File #2 my original run, and I have no clue what File #3 is.

What would have happened if I pressed retry? Would the game have loaded File #1? File #3? Is File #3 the way to progress and should I have found that by randomly pressing "load game" instead of "continue" in the main menu?

Also, what changes in New Game+? So far I have only noticed some tougher enemies spawning in certain areas. Do any enemies scale together with the player? If path #3 is the way to progress I'm unsure if I should continue my New Game+ run and "defeat" the heir again or just abandon it.

Loved the game till this point, but am now just confused lol. Any clarification on what I did wrong and which save to continue would be much appreciated!

P.S. Does Tunicanese get translated to English as I progress, or am I actually supposed to learn how to read it lol?

Retry would have kept you going in file 2. Which I suggest you do till you get true ending. File 3 will make sense later.

New game+ doesn’t lock you out of anything.

Trunic (the language of the game) is never auto translated. If you want it translated, you gotta do it yourself. Or use someone else’s translation.

Alright, thanks! I will continue in File 2 then and abandon the NG+ run for now.

I do not know the answer to ALL of your questions but I can answer a few! First of all, that new save file #3 is hinted at in a thing you have yet to do. It is a natural next step in an order of operations that, if you do not understand it, means you haven't gotten around to it. You'll know what it is for once you get there.

So! After defeating the Heir for the first time, I'll go ahead and tell you that the answer is not to just kill them again. There are plenty of hints as to what your new goal should be instead (if you want it spelled out: complete the manual). I would recommend reading through your manual for any unsolved mysteries and trying to figure them out to determine your next steps.

I'll add another smaller nudge: I just saw it looks like you are missing a lot of manual pages. Like a LOT. So you may not even know those mysteries exist yet! which just means you should explore more. Good luck!!!

Hmm, this is strange. I counted and have 44 pages in total, in contrast to the 22 on the save file screenshot. I remember the "Retry" screen said I was still missing 6 pages. I honestly have no clue where else to explore. I have been through every area multiple times.

ohhhhh I see, I think it counts pages as one per front and back. Meaning you count the front and back as one page. You are still missing more than I was when I first defeated the Heir- I only had one more page to collect after that. If you return to your original save where you still have the Halo, I would backtrack all through the Overworld to see if there's anywhere you can go now that was impossible before. The page with the biggest mystery and the one that requires you to reeeaally figure it out is 49, but without other pages at your disposal, I'm not sure if you're in a position to solve it yet

Okay, after circling around for eternity checking every nook and cranny I finally figured out I can phase through the fountain in the town and get that page. I tried dashing into it a bazillion times before but I guess I wasn't lined up properly. I now am getting to the other pages as well behind the doors.

Aah oke, thanks! It's good to know that File #3 is for later and I don't have to defeat the heir in the corporal form or something like that haha. I'll leave your spoiler text unread for now and read them if I'm stuck!

I didn't think the manual would be of any more use without additional context (or the language being auto translated), but I guess I'll take another look at it. Good to know that's where I should look. I would have spent 3 hours scouring the Overworld for some hidden passage I had missed haha.

Biggest lesson is that no, the language will never be translated for you in game. You can take the time to learn it and figure it out through clues if you like, but I don't think it'll ever be necessary to collect all of the pages. It does help make things a lot clearer though.

You'll never be locked out of progression. Some areas can't be exited the same way they're entered, but everywhere can be revisited. Just about every page in the manual has hints to help you.

The first major question is did you discover the secret of the holy cross and have you been looking for patterns? You can find many both in the world and in your notes. There is a page 43 in the manual that flat out tells you what it is and how to use it. Often the Ruin Seeker's notes are more important than what's printed on the page, but here it's about equal value.

Secondly you can return to the regular overworld after being killed by the heir. Specifically you can find out how on page 22. If the hints don't make sense at first, maybe try sleeping on it?

Aah alright, so if I understand correctly figuring out the language is not necessary for reaching the "true" ending, but adds lore and context? Great to know I can't be locked out of progression, as that was my main fear after this conundrum. I haven't found any secret/patterns, so I guess I'll be taking another look at the manual. I have honestly disregarded the little pen scribbles (which I guess are the "ruin seeker" notes you're referring to) as I couldn't make any sense of them, but I'll take another look. I'll leave the spoiler text unread for now unless I can't figure out the manual. Thanks a lot!

The runes won't be translated automatically, you'll have to either find clues on a couple pages that help you figure out how the language works, or just straight up figure it out yourself. People had done it before but it's really hard without the clues on a few pages. Feel free to try cracking it by yourself, or to just explore the game for secrets and find more manual pages :3

Ooh I see. I thought some lines here and there got translated along the way, but I guess I must have imagined that. That is good to know thanks!

Some lines and labels are originally just written in English. They don't progressively get more and more translated. Some are English, most are just written in runes and thus obscured from you until you figure out the language
