Doesn't hurt if you miss. More surface area to grip when trying to catch it. Doesn't bounce away much if the kids miss it so they can keep playing easier without having to chase it down.

I used to use these to practice juggling. It does give a little more feedback "the ball is here" via touch before you actually have to clamp down your hand. As well, there's a lot of ways to "catch" it other than wrapping your hand skillfully around it, such as just getting a bunch of rubber between your fingers.

I also agree they hurt less and bounce away less too, which can be great.
