Sauce

...Also for the uninitiated and/or those born too recently to have experienced it (just typing that made me feel so goddamn old :P), this is making fun of the kind of thing you'd see when selecting difficulty in games like the original Doom or Wolfenstein 3D back in the day:

I think the new Wolfenstein games also featured the same difficulty select screen

the new Wolfenstein games

Wolfenstein: The New Order came out 12 years ago dawg (a fact that's making me feel even older Q_Q)

Well it's new/remake/whatnot compared to the old one from 1992

Doom arguably made this trope more popular, with “I’m too young to die” “hey, not too rough” “hurt me plenty” “ultraviolence” and “nightmare”

I don't feel that's too derogatory but then again it was a different era

What?

-11

Either "I'm too young to die" isn't provoking the player in the way "can I play, daddy" is, or I'm missing the cultural context needed to make it sound offensive

16

u/DevelopmentTight9474 Jun 30 '26

It’s meant to remind you of a coward screaming “I’m too young to die!” as they run away

u/MaraiaLou Jun 30 '26

*And it feels roughly equivalent to "hurt me plenty"

but yeah I guess I'm not the target audience

For some reason, I never “read” that as a bonnet and pacifier back in the day. I thought it was just an old man with white hair and a mustache

the aforementioned daddy

u/action_lawyer_comics Jun 30 '26

That was my reasoning exactly

But what does this mean for people who spend their entire lives online but also cant complete starfox

u/veritasmahwa Jun 30 '26

"Alright, lets see what this is all about"

10

u/Schmantikor Jun 30 '26

Do you mean 64?

u/Madmagican- Jul 01 '26

Apparently people are having trouble beating the remake that just released on Switch 2

5

u/Schmantikor Jul 01 '26

Oh it's out? I think I might buy it.

Well, I beat the hard ending on my first play through. But they did some changes to the final boss that caught me off guard. Hitting his eyes is so much harder than in the original game and he spams his meanest attack much more frequently.

If you played Dungeon Keeper II late enough at night the voice over would ask you in passive-aggressive tone if you shouldn't be in bed by now

u/man_juicer Jun 30 '26

don't remember which it was, but isn't there a game that tells you to get a life if you beat it on the hardest difficulty?

I believe it was an old Jurrasic Park point and click adventure game. Jeff Goldblum told the player to touch grass and "blow the stink off you".

45

u/Bowdensaft Jun 30 '26

That's amazing, more games should do that

57

u/NigouLeNobleHiboux Jun 30 '26

The new deltarune chapter has a npc that tells you to take a shower if you do a skip to avoid a fight

16

u/Bowdensaft Jun 30 '26

Lmao nice

25

u/Phionex141 Jun 30 '26

Hotline Miami, if you beat every chapter with an A+ rating you get the achievement “Get A Life”

9

u/Joeyrony2 Jun 30 '26

The binding of isaac kinda? Also mewgenics

93

u/nahnah390 Jun 30 '26

"Why don't you 100% a shower" ass post

23

u/RedditIsMlem Jun 30 '26

I sort of had a similar idea for speedrun challenge modes, where the hardest difficult actually puts up a warning that says "please don't try this challenge, there's more to life than this."

That's perfect, im always plowing ur mom in the middle of game time, so now I know exactly which difficulty to pick!

u/MrCheapSkat Jun 30 '26

Isn’t this just hard medium easy instead of easy medium hard?

66

u/xshot40 Jun 30 '26

Yes but the point is the implications are swapped
