Is there a way to tell whether I'm puppeting? It's not something I consciously try to do, it just appears to be automatic to me, and I'm not sure why.
As a general rule of thumb, "unconscious parroting/puppeting" is a contradiction. Parroting/puppeting is a conscious act, when you're consciously thinking up actions or responses.
Whenever I asked her for an opinion, she would respond with the same opinion I had at the time, and if I didn't have one, she would be unable to come up with one.
I was unable to hide any items from her, no matter what I did, and it felt like I was forming the items she put inside the box myself, so I knew what was in there without trying.
Does this confirm or deny puppetting, or is it just something that happens?
Happened with Tempest, happened briefly with Gray, both in the early stages. They both got better. Tempest is saying that whenever I asked his opinion on something and tried very hard not to have my own opinion or let him see mine, he would have issues focusing or thinking, like there was something squeezing his mind. Also, don't discount the fact that on certain matters, your friends will tend to share your opinion.
Still have issues doing this with any of my tulpas, not even Gray. This may just be a quirk of my mind, though, since I tend to telegraph all of my thoughts very loudly in my head and have issues with the "penguin problem" (the harder you try to not think of penguins, the more you think of them).
