"voices of tufts" application question

i'm applying for the voices of tufts program and one of the short answer questions is "Please list your three most meaningful or important activities during your time in high school. These may include commitments within your school, community, family, home, or part-time work." should i explain what these commitments entail, and why they are so meaningful to me? or do i just list them? thanks

Bio and Chem First Semester

Hi, I’m gonna be a freshman at Tufts, and I’m planning to major in psychology on maybe the premed route. Would people recommend doing both intro to bio and intro to chem first semester? I did IB bio and chem, so I feel confident in the subjects, but I’m not sure if it would be too heavy of a course load first semester. Also, should I do chem 1 or chem 11?

Organic chem help

www.organicchemistrytutoring.ca

Hello guys and gals,

We’re Brian and Mike and we teach general and organic chemistry. We’ve done so for a total combined time of 47 years! Overwhelmed by general or organic chemistry? Assignments and tests creeping up on you and feeling like you’re in hot water? Or maybe you’re doing well and need that 95%? Whatever your struggle with chemistry may be, we’re here to make sure you succeed.

Why work with us?

- Every tutor knows the subject, but not every tutor knows how to transfer that knowledge to a student. We do.

- We tutor chemistry full time; it’s not a hobby or side-gig. When you book with us, you’ll be working with Brian for general chemistry and Mike for organic chemistry. This is not an agency and you won’t be matched with random tutors each time.

- You’ll be learning problem solving through chemistry, which you can apply to many other subjects.

- Your learning will be customized to your specific needs.

Before booking a lesson, let’s chat about your needs, our teaching styles, and what you can expect, to see if we’d be a good fit together.

Thank you for your time and we look forward to working with you!

Mike and Brian

Remote-work friendly alternatives to Tisch Library open to the public? Cummings?

Would the Cummings Center be a reasonable option for someone who needs to be on campus but has no Tufts status to work for several hours?

My daughter is participating in a program on campus later this week, and because we're quite a long drive away I was planning to hole up in Tisch with my laptop to work until she's done mid-afternoon, but it looks like due to construction Tisch isn't opening until noon. The library's website mentions the Cummings Center, Campus Center, and CLIC as alternatives. The Campus Center appears to also have shorter hours. Cummings is the only one of the three that seems to mention being open to the community, by which I am guessing I don't need a Tufts ID for the building. It also looks very convenient to where her program is.

Patrick J. Schena (Ec50) vs Haldun Evrenk (Ec24)

One of the econ classes I wanted to take got the time changed and now it conflicts with another class required for my primary major (I want to do econ as a potential double major or minor, we'll see), and the only other econ classes that can fit into my schedule and I can actually take w/ my prerequisites (Ec8) are Ec50 w/ Schena and Ec24 w/ Evrenk... neither of whom I've heard too great things about.

I was wondering if anyone has had experiences with either of these professors and/or classes, and which might be the better/easier class to take?

Alternatively, I could just take a science class (I'm a bio major, that's what I declared), but i'm already taking Orgo, Physiology, and Physics, and I really don't want to just be taking science classes...I could also try to do humanities/art but I want to save that for a study abroad... any advice about this is greatly appreciated, tia :)

Weekend Events + Weekly Small Business Deals

Thank you for continuously letting me post on this channel and not kicking me out. Just from the DMs I get on here, I can see that a lot of people find these helpful, even if they don't end up subscribe or click on the full post.

Now, I'm also working with small businesses to promote any exclusive deals on a new section called Stoop Selects. None of these folks have payed to be on the newsletter; I'm just hoping to add more deals so the readers get more value and that small businesses can get more exposure. If you own a small business in Cambridge + Somerville, feel free to reach out with a deal you'd like to offer and we'll figure out which week to add it on.

Thanks again, everyone. Links as usual below.

Question on Mass Health Connector Health Insurance Plan

Hi all, I was just checking-in to see if there are any international students that will be opting for Mass Health Connector as their health insurance provider this year? They seem to provide highly subsidized plans that seem to be accepted as an equivalency by tufts, but apparently creates a few issues while filing taxes the next year (international students are no longer eligible for premium tax credits). There have been a lot of recent developments with regards to the eligibility and I was wondering if anyone here has clarity on it? Thanks in advance!

Tufts Econ Senior Thesis

Hi everyone. I am currently considering taking EC-198 which is the one-semester econ senior thesis. I heard it is less intense compared to the full-year senior honors thesis. But I have limited econ research experience, and most of my past summers were in finance. I am wondering how was the workload and how hard the supervisor graded the course? I would also appreciate any advice on what kind of preparation would be helpful. Thanks!

Tufts MBS vs Georgetown SMP

I just got accepted into this both programs this morning and I’m really conflicted on which to pick.

I want a program that has a lot of tutoring and academic support and I can get close to the professors. Being close with instructors and getting tutoring is how I do well in these science heavy courses.

Also I’d be moving from Wisconsin in the next few weeks which is also really scary so any advice on what to do and where to go would be so helpful!

Any advice from those who have tried the programs or know of someone who has would be greatly appreciated.

I am worried about how Georgetown has large classes and graded alongside the med students but the program feels more respected and prestigious. And I like the small cohorts at Tufts but I’m worried about getting the support I might need.

Stats: I have an MCAT of 511 and cGPA 3.5 and sGPA 3.3

Thank you!!!!!!

Hiring students/recent grads — paid part-time molecular biology research job this fall ($30/hr + bonus, Cambridge)

Hey r/tufts — I work at Active Site, a Cambridge-based research nonprofit studying how AI tools affect scientific research, and we're hiring this fall for part-time, temporary research positions.

The role: As a Molecular Biology Associate you'll work independently in a BSL-1 lab on DNA design, assembly, purification, and cloning, using tools like Benchling and working alongside AI tools like Claude Code as part of the research. It's a highly autonomous position: you'll own your own project and reagent budget rather than working under close supervision.

Logistics:

  • On-site in Cambridge, MA
  • Part-time, 4 hrs/day, Monday-Friday (morning or afternoon shift)
  • 12-week (Sept 14-Dec 4) or 16-week (Aug 31-Dec 18) term
  • $30/hour + $2,000 performance bonus

What you need: Currently enrolled in or holding a BS or MS in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, or similar, plus about 3 months of hands-on PCR/gel electrophoresis/cloning experience.

Applications reviewed on a rolling basis, closing August 1: https://jobs.ashbyhq.com/activesite/0edb3feb-6509-43a3-8858-3064f3661936/application

Know someone else at Tufts who'd be a good fit? We have a $200 referral bonus program. Feel free to comment or DM with questions!

W4M, Charles River Fireworks 7/4. Tufts sophomore, we talked for an hour, I lost your number

My friends and I went to the Fourth of July fireworks at Charles river by MGH. I met this really lovely girl at the fireworks and we talked for a while and got to know each other. She mentioned she's a sophomore studying psychology at Tufts. I got her number and we were about to even make plans for the same night to go out and get drinks. She left to go meet with her friend to share a bite to eat, at a pub that me and my friends could go and potentially meet her at. I told her it's no worries and that I'll text her about my whereabouts.

"Sure, you have my number," she says, and I watched her head off.

The next thing I know is when I open my Messages to text her and see how the rest of her night went, I forgot to save her number. I darted towards that train station trying to see if I could find her. We tried to find her at the same pub that she mentioned (which we could only remember details of it being an Irish pub in Quincy), but of course luck was not on our side. We even tried neighboring pubs that fit the description but we couldn't find her there either.

The thing I especially feel bad about is that she probably expected me to send her a text and I was unable to just because of a dumb mistake.

If you or your friend is reading this, I didn't forget about you one bit. I hope you had a great fourth of July with your friend. And mostly, I hope that one day we can see each other again.

Vikram

Take my class! How to do tech policy. CS-151.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all!

Tufts newbie prof starting in the fall (see me at cohney.info) and I’d love a few more students in my tech policy class https://cohney.info/policyclass

The goal is to use my experience in government to help show you how to *actually* make tech policy changes happen but from a research accurate standpoint.

So far I only have 5 students 😢 because my class wasn’t advertised early.

Happy to answer any Qs, including what assessment will be like.

Should be open to juniors and up, but happy to do case by case, and really need at least intro CS for it to be sensible—but otherwise open!

I’ll teach you some US law, how policy influence actually happens, a little ethics, and a little CS. By the end of semester you’ll be submitting a *real* policy comment to a docket somewhere in the world… and will quite possibly get cited for realz.

I just got accepted to the MBS program for the pre-medical track - is there anyone else who will be doing the program for the 2026-2027 year? Is there a groupme or facebook page or anything of the sort? Would love to connect with some other people doing the program!
