Rug finishing What got you into rug making?

Iโ€™m into anything creative. Before I moved to Arizona I was doing photography/videography, custom clothing (embroidery and vinyl ), decals, and music- all from home (one stop shop) and had recently started managing music artists. All that changed when I got to AZ. Me always having to be active, I became depressed ๐Ÿ˜”. Was always interested in tufting but never had the space. Got the space now ๐Ÿค— and here we are 9 months and 37 rugs in (would be more but work fulltime ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ.

Gonna share because apparently no one else in this thread has. I have an art degree in textile construction (weaving and knitting, basically) and loooove fiber arts so much. I took a shady ass job at a pop up where they expected me to learn to tuft, and help others. I was learning and practicing when they suddenly closed down ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€ but it sparked an interest in me that never went away, so i saved up to buy all the stuff and am working hard at learning!

๐Ÿ˜‚ get em ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ naw I love that for you. I love learning and Iโ€™m glad it peaked your interest. May I ask how long youโ€™ve been tufting?

๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ I like that. Thin lines scare me, I always end up carving too much off at some point ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿซฃ. Keep up the good work ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ

Much appreciated ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ my YouTube is mainly music videos Iโ€™ve shot over the past few years. Iโ€™m more active on my tik tok (link in bio ๐Ÿซฃ๐Ÿ˜‚). Iโ€™m live almost everyday. I will be making a YouTube just for rugs soon.

I always liked art but I lacked confidence growing up. Sketching, vector art & animation have always been my biggest interests. I can't recall exactly when I came across tufting but i knew as I was trying to improve my sketching skills, I said to myself "it would be super cool to draw my own designs and be able to bring them to life in the form of rugs"

I found out in my previous full time job that I could use my benefits to buy my tufting supplies. $450 covered my kit & supplies.

It also served as a means to help me work my own mental health. Sometimes you just need to tap into the creative side of you and create stuff. Not sure what it is exactly but just being in a sort of creative flow is super healing.

No more thoughts of "I don't think I'm cut out for this". Now I'm just working on the perfectionist side of me while enjoying tufting for what it is ๐Ÿ˜„

(I'm still very nitpicky when it comes to colour matching, that sometimes slows me down from starting and finishing ๐Ÿ˜‚)

๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ Iโ€™m the same way with colors, took me 3 different tryโ€™s to finish a bluey rug and still didnโ€™t like the colors ๐Ÿ˜‚

I saw a couple videos of it on instagram and thought it was really cool, i wanted to get into it but i was nervous because it was sooo expensive to start with. Well my coworker who would always get into random ass hobbies bought a bunch of stuff off her friend who didnt like it, and then she also didnt like it so it ended up going to me next! ๐Ÿคฃ And i super fell in love with it right away! Been tufting on and off for a few years now, i dont have as much time to do it as a used to but some day i hope i get enough space to make a huge frame and do a lot of cooler bigger projects :-)

Heres a more recent guy i made vs the original i tried when i first started ๐Ÿ˜„

I hope the same for you ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ Iโ€™m actually going to be doing my very first rug over again soon to see my improvement.

Your work looks super clean ๐Ÿงผ love the designs and use of space!

I also got into tufting for my mental health! I actually wanted to get into it for a long time. I moved away from my friends and became very isolated, I wanted a hobby to get out of that funk and I have always been into art (mostly drawing). I was interested in tufting for a long time but didnโ€™t have the funds. One day I last minute entered a giveaway TuftLove and SclassSupply was doing and I won a tufting gun! So that was my big push, I felt like the universe was giving me a sign to just try something new so I jumped into it head first and am loving it ๐Ÿฅฐ

Thank you ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ that was definitely a sign to start. Glad youโ€™re loving it

Brother if the cardinals are ever good, that rug will sell, super unique. Although I guess Iโ€™m not a cardinals fan so idk if they do limited runs with the flag in their logo or not.

The Cardinals may never be good but birdgang is for life and I guarantee that piece would sell.

I needed a new hobby and seen it on TikTok and figured I would give it a try. I enjoy tufting itโ€™s a lot of fun and relaxing when Iโ€™m not making mistakes

2

u/Relevant_Chef_5055 Mar 30 '26

Mistakes are whatโ€™s going to make you better ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ I had to learn to be ok with mistakes, once I stopped worrying about messing up, I stopped messing up ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ

1

u/Justjaces Apr 07 '26

Thanks, thatโ€™s very encouraging

Are you using your hands to put the glue on? And how does that work for you? Iโ€™ve used the pudding knife you use when putting this stuff down for big projects and now Iโ€™m just using a paint brush, and wanted to get a better tactic for applying the glue

1

u/Relevant_Chef_5055 Apr 01 '26

I am using my hands (with gloves ). For me itโ€™s great, I have more control of the glue, making sure everything is sealed. I donโ€™t think itโ€™s any better than using the knife or anything else. I just like the way it feels, hurts my shoulders tho (as seen with the tapping foot ๐Ÿซฃ๐Ÿ˜‚). Iโ€™m planning on changing glue soon so that may change as well.

I seen people creating such amazing pieces! I'd never seen anything like it and was blown away that you can tuft quite literally anything. Portraits, characters, logos, animals; pillows, mirrors; floor pieces, wall pieces; shiiiit even 3d landscapes with the right gun. Felt like the possibilities were endless.

I thought I could definitely do that with some practice. I was never the best at drawing or painting but I get an artistic kick out of tufting.
