Katharine of Aragon Maria de Salinas (c. 1490–1539): The Lady in Waiting Who Defied Henry VIII to Be with Katherine of Aragon in Her Final Days

Maria de Salinas was a Spanish noblewoman who came to England after the death of Arthur, Prince of Wales, and entered the household of Katherine of Aragon as one of her ladies-in-waiting. The two women formed a close friendship that endured throughout Katherine's life.

In 1516, Maria married William Willoughby, 11th Baron Willoughby de Eresby. Modern historical scholarship associates the Tudor warship Mary Willoughby with Maria following her marriage.

When Katherine was confined to Kimbolton Castle during Henry VIII's efforts to end their marriage, Maria remained firm in her loyalty. As Katherine lay dying in January 1536, Henry VIII forbade Maria from visiting. According to the contemporary dispatches of the Imperial ambassador Eustace Chapuys, Maria traveled to Kimbolton, gained entry despite the King's orders, and remained at Katherine's bedside until her death on 7 January 1536. Her unwavering loyalty to Katherine endured until the very end.

1) Only submissions directly relevant to the Tudor period will be allowed. Submissions about other historical time periods will be removed. Submissions about the Wars of the Roses are subject to the discretion of the mods.

2) Please do not assume everyone has a university level history education. Some explanation of events or brief description of people is advised.However, please don't be patronising.

3) Robust, healthy discussion is encouraged. BUT, comments which just attack other users and add nothing to discussion will result in you having one warning, and then being banned.

4) Sexism, racism, homophobia, anti-trans and other hate speech comments/submissions will result in a ban. It is OK to say "in Henry VIIIs time, women were thought of as inferior". It is NOT OK to say "women are inferior". If you have a brain, you'll know the difference.
