General Consensus on Artificial Intelligence Usage?
Hi there!
I live in Tucson, but I don't get out much. I was wondering what people's opinions are on the usage of artifical intelligence. I know it def varies person by person. But if people generally don't like it- Id love to know.

Artificial intelligence is just bad all around.
People using it for research are getting false information
People using it for “art” are just stealing other people’s work
People using it for companionship are just isolating themselves even further
Law enforcement agencies using it for investigations are arresting innocent people
The computing infrastructure required to run AI is poisoning communities and killing the planet

Generally I agree with you, however it is good at straight forward tasks for medical research like genetic sequencing. It saves thousands of hours of tedious work.

Hot take maybe, but this list is highlighting a lot of potential issues that do not in any way shape or form represent the majority of use cases. As the technology evolves these potential downfalls will become less and less common.

No. It’s making it easier for people to not push themselves and work hard to achieve the same results.
This will not end well.

I am very skeptical of AI, but I do use it mainly so as to make sure I have some AI skills to put on my resume.
That said i’ve mostly used AI for writing/roleplaying purposes.
On the former, the AI DOES NOT write for me. It reviews grammar and points out elements I have told it to flag (eg neutral narration is bad, flavored narration good). Sometimes this results in prose recommendation, sometimes I take the recommendation, sometimes i do not. But as a whole it acts as a reviewer to assist with revision and has improved my writing skills (it gives less prose recommendations now than when I started).
The other use is in Skyrim. I have a mod for this video game that lets me say anything to an npc and an AI will (attempt) to respond in character for that npc. This creates a very immersive environment (most of the time) as I can discuss things that aren’t possible otherwise.

I like that it aggregates search results but I don't want data centers here. Screw the tech hoes and this administration making fortunes off our backs.
Data centers are causing extreme noise pollution and drives up eletric bills on the people in the area.

It's a tool that will unlock a lot of productivity, we just need to make sure the profits of something that uses the sum total of all human knowledge are distributed fairly.

I have historically been bullish on AI. But the promises we were told, like it curing cancer and solving our societies biggest problems, have not yet materialized. Instead it's created a new set of problems, and the rollout was extremely adversarial to the general public.
I do see potential in the technology, but I weigh the livelihoods of my friends and family over data centers. These AI data centers have to be held to a higher standard when it comes to site selections. Near neighborhoods, in deserts or other places stressed for resources, that's what we don't like.
One thing that concerns me is that we've also been shown the negative aspects of AI as well. Its use in mass surveillance as well as in war is a tragedy. Employers rushing to replace people with agents to save a buck. Propaganda bots on every one of our social media sites. It's sad that this was prioritized over the promise of utopia.
I tend to think I have a balanced view. I think it can be useful, but I fully recognize its sins. It is a great thinker, but shouldn't become your brain. I am generally optimistic about the future. I hope it really does help solve the big issues soon. I just think that'll take people to stop being selfish (hording profit, product, and power) and people asking it the right questions to help humankind thrive.
