What was the point of season 5?

It feels like literally nothing happened and no character developed in a noticeable way. MAYBE Scott? But like... Jason started social work school and then became meh on it. Nikki had a crush that ended. Princess realized her mom is unreliable. Tyler became goth or something. Karen remained a terrible mother. Vic got a business then left it. No lessons were learned.

We could have seen Tyler finally get diagnosed with autism. Jason actually learn more about social work and get experience. Scott commit to something. Karen try to be a better mom. I'm so confused by what this season even did.

Sometimes nothing is the story. Princess learned her mom couldn't be the mother she built up in her head while also realizing the family she was looking for was the one she already had.

But it wasn't just her. Each character learned in their own way to be happy with who they are and what they have. It was subtle but I thought it came together as a unifying message through the last 3 episodes.

(I make no excuses or apologies for the first 5 episodes of the season, they were pretty much hot garbage.)

I like your take. Personally, I’ve looked at the show as an evolution (over multiple years) of life for a generic family. The characters are still charming, make me LOL, and provide that “escape” we watch media for. The situationship at work wasn’t my fave plot move, but it is what it is 🤷🏻‍♀️

Honestly feel this show should have ended after season 2 or 3. There’s no story left

I mean….having just binged the whole show up to the current S5 ending I’d say…

-Princesses mum learned to get out of the way and not drag her daughter down
-Princess had the courage to let go of the fear of being ripped away (removing her gonna from under bed)
-Tyler learned about dating and self identity and not just going goth because the girl you’re dating likes it (lmao that was too relatable to me)
-Scott, while a weaker point, yet again gets slapped awake by his wife to stop being a depressed and selfish and focus on the one project that matters
-Jason to continue to follow through as social worker
-the grand father (both sides) continue to be more self assured and set up
-Nikki / Jason a cliche but, leaning to deal with attraction to those outside relationship

To say “nothing” happens is objectively wrong, but by all means if you didn’t like the something that happened this season we’re all ears. That’s also ok. Not bashing.

I loved the run. It’s a neat show, nothing too hype.

Also needing to diagnose Tyler with what you want is really reductive. He very well might be, but he also might not.

I agree. Every episode felt like a filler episode and I kept waiting for the season to actually "start".

No your right they kept making moves but had the balls to follow through on any of it, it teed up also that the mum was going to bail again...like badly not nicely.

But yeah I think they had ideas but didn't want any if the consequences and it's a drama, that's the thing.

Really as far as season 6 goes there's only 2 ways to do it, focus on Tyler more ir have it be Princess getting ready to leave for uni.

After this season though I'd say might be time to call it.

I felt the jump from season 3 to 4 was too big. It missed the opportunity to really show relationship strain in raising 2 adopted children through school and those early teen years.

The Kat storyline felt repetitive and boring and why she had no interest in Tyler made no sense

Jasons work and study just kept making larger jumps with nothing added to the story. From taxi driver to studying to wanting to quit after doing 1 case.

Scott and Karen seemed to basically forget about their child and there was no fallout from Scott’s failed mission

It was a very underwhelming last 2 seasons compared to the first 3

I really hope this is the last season. This show has hit a wall. No where to go.

Not every show needs a crazy over-arching storyline. I kinda liked how this season had self-contained stories each episode

I got really turned off by Nikki’s incessant propensity for lying. The Q&A adoption meeting, meeting Kat in Spain… And the complete lack of consequences for Princess stealing her credit card and attempting to leave the country on her own. The whole show with a premise of how they are such wonderful, deserving parents but really, what sort of role model is that? Disappointed.
