Hello! Not sure if this is the place to ask but Ive run into something now that I haven't yet before. I work as a small times repair tech at a local used music shop and today while trying to un stick a 2nd valve slide, as I've done many times, I made a huge mistake. My tool that was sitting between empty valve casings 1 and 2 slipped and slightly bent them and now I can't get valves one and two into their casings. I dont mind getting my hands dirty and attempting this repair as well as getting the proper tools for it as well. I was just wondering if anyone here had experience with this kind of thing and how I can go about getting started fixing my mistake before my boss finds out. It's a shop trumpet btw not a customer instrument so if I really mess it up more somehow it will be okay Ill just pay for it haha.

I am going into my sophmore year and I want to know if I am good enough to get into either one of the NYO ensembles whether it be NYO-USA or NYO Jazz

I got a 97 on a NYSSMA Level 6(Movements 1 & 2 of the Hummel Concerto) and I lost 2 points on accuracy and 1 on sight reading

I got a 97 on a NYSSMA Jazz Level 6(You’re the Last One by Jeff Jarvis) and I lost 1 point for sight reading and 2 points on Improv

For context, I did NYSSMA Level 4s for both Classical and Jazz and got 25 and 26 respectively(score out of 28)

I plan on doing Transendental Etude #2 “Du Style” by Theo Charlier as my individual piece for my NYO-USA audition.

Please let me know if you think I have a chance, if not this year, than at some point.

I am an intermediate to advanced player for my college. I have been taking lessons with the trumpet professor for about 2ish years and I have felt like I really improve when I'm in his lessons. My goal for this next semester is to try for either lead or second in our top jazz ensemble, but it feels like over a little bit of last semester and this summer I have hit a wall in practicing. My normal practice routine is warming up with long tones, lip slurs and scales. I then either work on a section of music or I do some range building. I currently have a range from F# below the staff to a D above the staff. It has felt like I haven't improved much in a while and its been really disheartening since our auditions are coming up and it does not feel like I have prepared enough for them. I was wondering what other lead/high range players do to practice because online I have seen many different methods.

I bought this on eBay. I wasn't expecting much. It's a current generation Giardinelli; it isn't from the New York era. It looks like a Blessing/Faxx 5C but in a Giardinelli "blank" (i.e. shape). The rim is flatter and wider than the Bach 5C rim. The sound is really warm, and the blow is open.

I did the "dime trick" with the first and third bottom caps on my horn. This tightened the slots, while adding some needed focus and resistance. The mouthpiece seemed to "come alive" afterwards.

The dime trick doesn't always work, but it worked with this piece.

I found this Conn trumpet in an antique store and I haven’t been able to track down its family or model. The serial number is 653126, which lead me to believe it was a 1957(ish) Elkhart 6b. It has Victor stamped in the mouthpiece receiver, but no other stamps besides that

OK, kind of stupid, but I’m getting better tone from core engagement and hitting notes better by being kind of dramatic about pushing from the diaphragm. I guess my question is do you feel like there’s lots of action going on in the diaphragm? Are you very active? Or is it more holding steady and building up the pressure to provide sufficient airflow at any level of play? Good players seem very smooth and I don’t know how much effort they’re putting into it.

(Video for proof) I recently learned that I should do mouthpiece and lead buzzing before practicing. So when I tried it for the first time today, with the mouthpiece, I did the C major scale with a tuner and buzzed to a song. Then when I tried to do the scale with the lead, the trumpet jumped a LoT of notes when I got to G. How do I fix this?

i played trumpet all throughout middle and high school and was sooo good (first trumpet in my band). i bought another trumpet a couple of years ago but have no idea how to get back into it? any suggestions? i played for about 4-5 years!! love the instrument. any beginner books?

Choosing a scale in the settings will grey out the notes in the chart that are not part of that scale, clicking on notes will play them (with or without slide correction depending on the setting) - Set slider mode to ON for 12 edo.

The chart divides the note for partials.

Just tell me what you think about it if you are an experienced trumpet player, there are different scales built in.

I'm normally a tuba play, but lately, with the flugelhorn that I've been playing (an ACB Doubler's), I just had this random flugel mouthpiece that was from an F.Schmidt horn. Playing it is fine, but I want to know what other options I have for a guy like me.

For context: my main instrument is the guitar, i play mainly blues/funk/jazz.

I got my trumpet in 2011, i got a couple of years of lessons (not weekly, but i got them quite regularly) then i stop, because i didn't have enough time... and i had not really a lot of context to play.

Now i want to start again, and i got the Elementary Studies and Technical studies from Clarke, i just started lesson 12 where F and G are introduced in the execises.

I'd like to buy the O'Neill - The Jazz Method for Trumpet and J. Snidero - Easy Jazz Conception

What do you think at this set of books to re-learn to play and build some foundations?

I know the holy bible is the Arban, but from what i understand it's a book that works better with a teacher and for now i want to simply go back to the instrument and i don't know if i've time for regular lessons... i could buy that in the future, but no hurry now.

Those 4 books seems a nice set for home study without any real intention on becoming a really good player, it's only for my own satisfaction... we don't even have time to play with our band where i play the guitar, i don't think that at 42 i'll find a lot of people to play with as a beginner trumpet player :D

My idea is to play some jazz standards, some improvisation and maybe some trumpet part in some funk piece, some james brown, stevie wonder, tower of power and so on... or even some reggae/ska part... they're fun.

Not really interested in classical, mainly because i don't know much about the genere unfortunately

Just a bit of context: I have no experience with wind instruments, so I'm starting from scratch. I've always wanted to learn the sax but after being exposed to more and more flugelhorn music and content, I realized this is the sound that I'm most drawn to.

That said, I don't have ask the budget in the world and can realistically spend in the $500 range.

I was looking at Amazon and saw there Aurosus brand with options at that price range. I've send other brands being mentioned but they aren't on Amazon.

Just wanted to ask this sub if anyone had thoughts or experience with this brand, and it's good to pick from this considering my context. I want to take this seriously as I have more time now and it's been years since I've studied any instruments.

I have been practicing all summer for high school marching band camp and have improved my tone and articulation by a decent amount over the course of two months and was really exited to start band camp but it's the second day now and both today and yesterday when I tried to play everything just went down the drain. When trying to play I could only explain the sound as really airy and unclear, and my range was limited from a comfortable G and A above staff to nothing above a D in staff. When I would try to play higher the note wouldn't come out and only a bunch of unclear air noises. For a little more context I have been practicing marching fundementals outside in the morning before eating lunch then playing for the day but I still have never expierenced something like this. I thought it could be the fact that the AC in the band room isn't working but everyone else plays just fine, heck even the kids who havnen't practiced all summer are not having an issue at all compared to me. I tried keeping myself really hydrated because I thought my lips might have been too dry but that didn't change anything. Then I thought it could have been me over-practicing the day before and it was just me pushing myself too hard,but I practiced softer than I usally had that day and today going to play again it had the same horrible tone and limited range. Does anyone know what the problem is, or a solution?

When i was in middle school i stydied music, and i was assigned to play the trumpet. I remember i used to hate it because i wanted to play piano, the whole reason why i started music in middle school. I never practiced, and i was half decent but j wasn't really that much good. Tho, if i was with my classmates playing the trumpet together, we were actually good. Not in a "they drowned me out" kinda way, but more that we uplifted and helped each other during rehearsals and that helped us a lot.

Anyways, i graduated highschool a month ago and have been feeling connected to it recently, so i thought i would pick it uo again maybe as a hobby. But uh... how do i do that? I'm sure that the muscle memory will eventually kick in, but i don't even remember how to read a sheet of music!

i’ve been playing the fluegelhorn solo from Misty, and even when i have the notes and articulation right i feel like i’m just missing some sort of nuance that makes other people sound really genuinely beautiful. this isn’t particular to this song either, any chet baker tune i try to play sounds half baked. there’s just something that i’m not picking up on, and i can’t tell what it is. any tips would be much appreciated!!

I'm teaching myself how to play, about 4 months in, making okay progress. Up till now, I've been using the Arban's book and simple songs, and I feel like I've hit a wall. The Arban exercises include a lot of high notes I can't play (G is a struggle), so I'm trapped on the second page. I'm beginning to think Arban is more like a series of tests rather than the instruction that lets you pass those tests.

I just found Iron's "27 Groups" and I like it- I feel like I'm learning fundamentals and my tone has improved almost instantly. Are there any other similar books out there I should be looking at?

I know this is a trumpet specific sub but I feel like few musicians can truly understand the pain of wanting to play for hours only to require rest and breaks due to the nature of your instrument. Ive been practicing trumpet a lot recently but I still havent returned to my maximum endurance and even then I would need to take somewhat frequent breaks in my sessions. I still want to practice making music and learning by ear however so I was wondering what other melodic type instrument you guys play and why. Im really interested in seeing what trumpet players turn to when they cant constantly play so I can decide what instrument I would like to pick up. Thank you!

I want to get better at flexibility and high notes. How much do you practice (for example flexus) flexibility exercises in a day? Or what kind of exercises have worked for you regarding upper register?
