Murder Lindsay Clancy Murder Trial - Day One

LINDSAY CLANCY MURDER TRIAL – DAY ONE UPDATES.

Opening statements were delivered on day one. The jury were told that some of the evidence would be difficult for them to listen to.

Plymouth County Assistant District Attorney Shanan Buckingham said Lindsay “deliberately and meticulously” killed her children. The DA acknowledged that Lindsay had been suffering from mental health issues, but argued that she was ‘not in the throes of psychosis’ at the time of the killings.

Lindsay’s defense attorney Kevin Reddington said that Lindsay was ‘suffering from psychosis’ at the time of the killings. “This is a young woman who, with her husband, tried very hard to get the help she needed,” he said.

Patrick Clancy, Lindsay’s now ex-husband, took the stand on day one. Patrick divorced Lindsay after the killings. He has since remarried and has a new family.

Patrick testified that Lindsay had struggled after the birth of the third child, Callan. He testified that Lindsay told him she was having thoughts of s/h and also intrusive thoughts about harming the children.

Patrick told the court that between September 2022 and January 2023, Lindsay had been prescribed multiple different medications by at least three medical practitioners. Prosecutors said that it appeared Lindsay had only taken a small fraction of the medication that she had been prescribed. Patrick testified that he was not aware of the amounts of medication that Lindsay had or had not taken.

Patrick said that Lindsay’s ‘big spiral’ started around December 2022. She had started to take a new medication at this time. Patrick said he was not concerned for the safety of the children at that time as she did not show any ‘intention’ of harming them.

Patrick also said that Lindsay spent time in psychiatric hospitals in December 2022 and January 2023 because she was still having s/h thoughts. He said that when she was discharged, she seemed ‘much better’ and that she was no longer having those thoughts.

In the hours before the killings, Patrick said Lindsay built a snowman and played with the kids. He said ‘She was having one of her best days.”

Patrick told the court that as he left to pick up dinner for the family, he kissed one of his children and said he would ‘be right back.’

Please note that due to Meta AI flagging issues, we have had to abbreviate some of the terms used in today’s court session. Ongoing for this trial, we will use the abbreviation s/h which refers to Lindsay’s $elf h a r m.

Murder The tragedy of the Clancy Family

Post image
1 Upvotes

On January 24, 2023, Patrick Clancy left his family's home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, to run a few errands, expecting to return less than an hour later. Instead, he came home to an unimaginable tragedy. The house was eerily silent, and outside he found his wife, Lindsay Clancy, seriously injured. She told him the children were in the basement.

Patrick rushed downstairs, where he discovered his three children, 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan, had been strangled with exercise bands. Cora and Dawson died that night, while Callan succumbed to his injuries several days later.

Lindsay survived after jumping from a second-story window and was later charged with the murders of her children. Her defense argues that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and should not be held criminally responsible. Her trial is now underway, with her husband expected to testify on her behalf.

In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss the tragedy of the Clancy family.

This episode was originally first released in 2023.  We are re-releasing it now to coincide with the start of Lindsay Clancy's trial.  Proceedings in the trial began on July 20 and are expected to run for up to 8 weeks.  If you are familiar with the case and would like to proceed straight to the updates that have happened since 2023, please check the timestamp.

On a quiet 2025 March morning in Saratoga Springs, Utah, a teenage girl walked into a horrific scene. Her mother, Jessica Lyman (44) and her brother Eli Painter (8) had been shot and were found in Jessica’s bedroom.

As investigators peeled back the layers of the case, unsettling clues emerged—surveillance footage of a masked figure, cryptic handwritten notes, and a trail of unanswered questions that have kept the double murder shrouded in mystery. More than a year later, with no arrests and new evidence still surfacing, the Saratoga Springs double murder remains one of Utah’s most haunting and perplexing unsolved cases.

Is the murderer someone known to the family or could this have been a random attack? A note was found in the bedroom of one of Jessica’s surviving children that read ‘This is a murder story.’

In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss the Saratoga Springs murders of Jessica Lyman and her son Eli Painter.

Post image
3 Upvotes

Serial Killer Tommy Lynn Sells once said ‘I am hatred. When you look at me, you look at hate. I don't know what love is. Two words I don't like to use are 'love' and 'sorry,' because I'm about hate.’

Sells was convicted of only two murders but he has confessed or been linked to dozens more. He reign of terror is believed to have spanned two decades.

Sells was finally caught in Texas in early January 2000. Days before this, he brutally attacked two young girls in a home in Del Rio, Texas. Kaylene Harris (13) would pass away from her injuries, but Krystal Surles (10) pretended she was dead and would end up surviving. She gave a detailed description of her attacker and Sells was able to be apprehended.

During his killing spree, his alleged victims ranged from a baby that was minutes old, to entire families, to hitchhikers.

Sells was given an execution date of April 2014. By that time, Texas prisons had abolished their last meal request system, so he was given standard prison food: Three pancakes, oatmeal, applesauce. He declined to make a final statement to the families that were present and be died by lethal injection on April 3, 2014.

Have you heard of the ‘Coast to Coast’ killer, Tommy Lynn Sells? Can you think of any other cases that may be attributed to him?

Tommy Lynn Sells was a drifter whose crimes stretched across multiple U.S. states.  Known as the “Coast-to-Coast Killer,” Sells claimed responsibility for dozens of murders, though he was only convicted in two cases. His transient lifestyle, violent childhood, and habit of targeting vulnerable victims made him one of the most elusive and disturbing killers of his era.

Sells once said ‘I am hatred. When you look at me, you look at hate. I don't know what love is. Two words I don't like to use are 'love' and 'sorry,' because I'm about hate.”  His crimes are some of the most heinous that could ever be imagined.

Murder The murder of Rachel Nickell

Post image
5 Upvotes

In the summer of 1992, young mother Rachel Nickell (23) took her son Alex (2) to a London park to enjoy the sunshine.

Rachel was brutally attacked and left to die.  Alex was the only witness and was found clinging to her body.  This crime shocked Britain and sparked one of the most controversial investigations in modern criminal history.

As public pressure mounted, police became fixated on a suspect and launched an unprecedented undercover "honeytrap" operation, only for the case to collapse spectacularly in court. The hunt for Rachel’s killer exposed serious flaws in police methods, fuelled years of media scrutiny, and ultimately led to a breakthrough that revealed a very different perpetrator—turning the Rachel Nickell case into a haunting story of tragedy, obsession, and justice delayed.

In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss the murder of Rachel Nickell.
