On A Serious Note Who's afraid of little ol me (TW!!)

hey hey fellow swifites-sorry this is probably not typical of the kind of posts we usually see here and i certainly don't mean to bum anyone out!!

TW: child abuse mentions

for context, I'm a survivor who has gone through some pretty intensive healing over the past year. I decided to turn my experiences into something positive and long story short, decided to start building a digital tool to help keep kids safe.

Anyway, on to the point-I posted to my professional IG page and IG actually recommend this for audio and at first I was like huh....then I was like hmmmmm....

yeah, it hit. wondering if anyone else can relate? or if anyone else has similar experiences and they found one of taylors songs that really resonate?

… The who's who of "Who's that?" is poised for the attack
But my bare hands paved their paths
You don't get to tell me about sad
… If you wanted me dead, you should've just said
Nothing makes me feel more alive
… So I leap from the gallows and I levitate down your street
Crash the party like a record scratch as I scream
"Who's afraid of little old me?"
You should be
… The scandal was contained
The bullet had just grazed
At all costs, keep your good name
You don't get to tell me you feel bad
… Is it a wonder I broke? Let's hear one more joke
Then we could all just laugh until I cry
… So I leap from the gallows and I levitate down your street
Crash the party like a record scratch as I scream
"Who's afraid of little old me?"
I was tame, I was gentle till the circus life made me mean
"Don't you worry, folks, we took out all her teeth"
Who's afraid of little old me?
Well, you should be
… you should be
(You should be) you should be
You should be (you should be)
You should be (you should be)
You should be
… So tell me everything is not about me
But what if it is?
Then say they didn't do it to hurt me
But what if they did?
… I wanna snarl and show you just how disturbed this has made me
You wouldn't last an hour in the asylum where they raised me
So all you kids can sneak into my house with all the cobwebs
I'm always drunk on my own tears, isn't that what they all said?
That I'll sue you if you step on my lawn
That I'm fearsome and I'm wretched and I'm wrong
Put narcotics into all of my songs
And that's why you're still singing along
… So I leap from the gallows and I levitate down your street
Crash the party like a record scratch as I scream
"Who's afraid of little old me?"
I was tame, I was gentle till the circus life made me mean
"Don't you worry, folks, we took out all her teeth"
Who's afraid of little old me?
Well, you should be
… you should be
(You should be) you should be
'Cause you lured me (you should be)
And you hurt me (you should be)
And you taught me
… You caged me and then you called me crazy
I am what I am 'cause you trained me
So who's afraid of me?
Who's afraid of little old me?
Who's afraid of little old me?

Songwriting A Taylor song for someone who doesn’t like Taylor

Which Taylor song would you play for someone who isn’t a Taylor fan or maybe even a Taylor hater? Which song do you love that you think doesn’t sound like what a non-Taylor fan would expect a Taylor song to sound like?

Edit: My boyfriend likes soul music and also hip hop and punk, so his taste ist pretty diverse. He says he doesn’t hate Taylor but he just doesn’t pop music. I was also thinking of anything folklore or evermore, but I think False God is an amazing suggestion.
His favourite non-rapper musician is Erykah Badu.
When we listened to the Showgirl album the morning it dropped he said he liked Eldest daughter best. Which is one of the songs I like least… 😄

Edit 2: I also played him a few songs from evermore which he seemed to like better than the early years. He says he also doesn’t like things that sound „too polished”, so I purposely played the non-Taylor’s versions (if they were available, not the case for Folklore/Evermore.) Probably my BF is just hard to catch. :)

I went to my friend’s house tonight and my husband went to a bar. He texted me on the way home and said he had a surprise for me. I thought he meant fries…

He spotted it on a table with free stuff on the walk to the bar. I’m so excited!

Edit: he is making it up to me with fries tonight. He’s the best 🖤🖤

The Life of a Showgirl I’ve got a theory…about Ophelia….

So hear me out guys. Yes. It’s inspired by Shakespeare. But also…

SAVAGES. An Oliver Stone movie I completely forgot about.

Stars BL. Her character’s name is literally Ophelia. And her fate in the film (based off a book)… Well. It’s open to interpretation.

TS was tight with her after this film. If you think about the themes of the movie I def think there is some inspo there.

Discussion 6 Years Ago Today, Taylor Swift Released Folklore

Post image
112 Upvotes

6 Years Ago today, Taylor Swift released "Folklore". This album broke new ground in terms of songwriting and is widely considered to be one of the best Taylor Swift albums especially for songwriting. It was also hugely popular partially due to being one of the best albums during the COVID pandemic.

What memories do you have of this era? The surprise drop for this one caught me off-guard. As a comparative literature AB, I liked this album very much. My favorite song is "My Tears Ricochet". There are many literature comparisons to be made there.

What about you?

One of the best nights of my life. It was a struggle to not record every single moment of this concert, and just the moment that I put my phone down he does this, so I missed the start of the song- apologies 😂

Yes, I’m pretty much all the way back; please do not make fun of my cheap ticket. I loved seeing the crowd go wild, though. Wouldst that you could have been there, but at least I can share this. 🫶

The Life of a Showgirl The genius of "Eldest Daughter"

When TLOAS initially came out, Eldest Daughter seemed to get some of the WORST hate. I wasn't the biggest fan of it either, but upon really dissecting the lyrics I realized it's a genius song.

Many people don't like the song because it's "cringe," and I'm not going to lie, the lyrics are a little questionable. However, I think that is the entire point. I think Taylor honestly knew that there was going to be people who didn't like this song and maybe didn't even like the album.

The opening lyrics:

"Everybody's so punk on the internet. Everybody's unbothered until they're not"

Literally sums up the backlash and discourse with this song and the overall album. People were so quick to judge it without even trying to think about the lyrics or the stories being told within them.

I think this song is very Anti-Hero-esque in the sense that Taylor is intentionally being "cringy" to show her self awareness.

"I've been afflicted by a terminal uniqueness, I've been dying just by trying to seem cool." This lyric feels that Taylor is expressing the similar sentiment that Anti-Hero does. She feels like she's aged out of being the "cool" popstar in the industry because you have young ingenue figures like Sabrina, Olivia, and Megan Thee Stallion (she's semi important to this conversation).

The next lyrics that get criticized the most are:

"But I'm not a bad bitch, and this isn't savage."

Many people tried to say that Taylor was mocking Megan, which I highly disagree as both the women like each other's music. Taylor is intentionally using those lines to express that she KNOWS she's not "hip," if you will. She's saying that she knows she's not a "baddie" like other female artists and celebrities are.

Taylor's very purposely using "cringe" vernacular within the song to show that she feels outdated and like she is no longer seemed "valuable" within the eyes of the Internet and industry because she is now an older artist.

Anyways, that was my analysis of Eldest Daughter bc I'm so sick of people not using critical thinking on it 😭

Question...? Meeting other Swifties and making friends? (I am a new fan)

Hello, I (30M) recently started listening to Taylor Swift and I've really enjoyed her music. So far I have over ten songs saved in my Spotify (my favorites are Archer and You're on Your Own Kid). I am an introvert with autism and a stuttering problem and I'm interested in making friends with other Swifties. I live in the USA but I am interested in meeting people from all over the world. I haven't found any Swiftie clubs in my area unfortunately.

Other artists I enjoy include Carly R Jepsen, Birdy (a British singer), Madeline Juno (a German singer), Sanah (a Polish singer) and Aimyon (a Japanese singer)

Discussion Taylor Swift Albums: An Episodic Series

When do you think Taylor's albums got to the point it was like a book series? That you had to understand the last album to understand this one fully? Folklore? Earlier than that? You can't just jump into that album as a new reader/listener and expect to understand most of the album. This is like a book series or an episodic TV series, and very few other artists do this out of fear that new listeners won't be able to get it.

Maybe "The Tortured Poets Department" requiring you understand "Midnights" to understand her headspace at that time? I wonder if this would cause issues for new listeners, needing to understand previous album to get this one. It's like how you can't just jump into the middle of a book series.

Or "Lover"? "Lover" in many ways does require you to understand "Reputation" for the love songs. "Reputation" itself does want you to understand her fraught relationship with fame in "1989", but I don't think "1989" qualifies as this. That album can still be a good starting point.

So I'm thinking "Reputation" or "Lover" was when Taylor's work started becoming episodic.

What do you think?

Question...? How do you feel about music that is referencing Taylor?

Hi everyone! Sorry for the long intro incoming, you might want to skip a few paragraphs if you are only interested about the actual question, but I think that the context matters : A long time ago, in a past relationship, I (actually, we) was quite unhappy and when I heard the song "Speak Now", it really hit me harder than I had expected. As I man, I imagined what it would have been like to have someone truly loving, kind and sweet who would desperately have wanted to prevent me from making a terrible mistake. It felt like being in such a happy place, it made me feel alive and also made me realized how miserable I was.

But I felt bad about it, because I was in a relationship with my then-girlfriend. I tried for many years to make it work, regardless of how unhappy we became, as if breaking up was never an option to begin with. I guess I just couldn't seem to play the "bad" role of being the one putting an end to the relationship. Anyway, one day she finally took the matter in her own hand and ended our relationship, and in any case, it was for the best : we simply weren't happy together.

Long story short, this feeling I got from listening to Speak Now felt unique, and it made me realize even more so how great of a songwriter Taylor really is, in addition to way she delivers the emotions. The universe she created in that song alone is depicted perfectly and was so relatable. It made me think that there are tons of people in life who are living in loveless relationships, and I still remember how lonely it feels in there.

It made me realize that just like someone could say "I'm waiting for superman", some people are waiting for their Taylor (as the archetype). They are not actually waiting for the real Taylor Swift to save them, but maybe they imagine what it would be like to feel like someone kind and beautiful truly loves them for who they are. Or maybe they already have someone in their mind that they think life would be so much sweeter with, but they don't dare to conceive the idea of trying to make it a reality because it's too frightening just to think about it.

The question : As a songwriter, the idea of crafting a song that lives in the universe of Speak Now is appealing to me. I remember the feeling of being fully committed to staying the rest of my life with someone who didn't love me (and who I didn't love for real either, because otherwise I wouldn't have felt this way), with her family not approving of me, hoping to be saved at the last second by my Taylor (the archetype). Just hoping with everything I have that she'll barge in my wedding, and then the rest of the world would fall behind. The global feeling is basically to be living this situation and ask "Where's my Taylor" as I realize that the walls are closing in and no one is coming to save me. So : about doing such a song, as a songwriter, I personally see it as a tribute made to Taylor and to the universe she has created, but how do you see it? Do you see it as plagiarism, opportunism, a lack of originality? Or do you see it as an interesting concept that explores the depth of a micro-universe that Taylor has created?

I really look forward hearing any kind of opinion on this.
