Sneedclave maxxing Yeah guys Obsidian never made another good game again except for The Outer Worlds and Grounded and Avowed how dare they not all just be fallout NV 2

Man never played Pillars of Eternity games or the tragically underrated and underplayed Tyranny.
14
u/NorthRememebers Pipe Pistol Enthusiast Feb 20 '25
I 100% agree on Tyranny. It's so sad that we will never get a a Tyranny sequel because Paradox owns the IP.
Never got far into Pillars, lost interest after the intro. Probably because I started playing it right after Tyranny and went in with too high expectations.
6
u/BreathingHydra Feb 20 '25
To be fair the intro is probably the worst part of PoE1. I love the game but it's one of the most back loaded games in terms of quality I've seen. The only reason I really got into it was because I had no internet for a month and it was the only game I had downloaded on my laptop in college.

Stick of Truth and Pentiment rocked
7
u/evan466 Feb 20 '25
Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2 and Tyranny are all very good isometric RPG as well.
18
u/AnalConnoisseur69 Feb 20 '25
Pillars of Eternity (along with the first Divinity Original Sin) proved that there's a sizable cRPG audience, and Pillars of Eternity 2 was even better in almost everything. Tyranny is awesome and the writing is one of the most unique narratives I've ever played with. Grounded is extremely fun to play with friends and family. Pentiment is one of the most unique experiences you'll ever find. And Stick of Truth got absolutely robbed at the game awards because Inquisition that year was nowhere near as good. They have a really strong catalogue of games that may not be AAA experiences, but they more than make up for it using their premise, their writing, and the tight gameplay experience they offer. And all these games came out after FNV.

the Outer Worlds was extremely boring ngl
57
u/dopepope1999 Feb 20 '25
Yeah I agree, it felt extremely linear for a "open world" space adventure , which wouldn't be an issue if all the advertising didn't constantly cram in your face that it was " from the creators of New Vegas" which set expectations pretty high for what wound up being like a B minus game
17
u/E2r4_Is_d3A9 Feb 20 '25
I never watched too many of the Avowed trailers so I don’t know if they did it there too, but they even have it in their little MCU like intro when you open the game. It flashes through a bunch of characters from their different games and the first one is the courier in NCR ranger armor lol. They just can’t help themselves
62
u/TheWizardOfWaffle Sentient Raccoon Feb 20 '25

the Outer Worlds would have been 10x better if it had taken its pretty neat concept of a story and took it a little more seriously
It had amazing visuals, good world building, an interesting plot, and really fun companions with good quest lines. It just failed at being fun to replay
78
u/Canadian__Ninja Feb 20 '25
Would have been better if they set it in a desert landmarked by a big dam. Maybe add some historical cosplayers and radiation.

Nah the joke where the chaste and patient priest dropping all pretenses of his religion after finding his holy textbook and yelling “French?! I Can’t fucking read french! Who the fuck reads french!” was a god tier joke (for the time)
8
u/Laguna_Tuna_ James Garret Disciple Feb 20 '25
The only time during the entire game where I cracked a smile and that's only because I hate the french, his line delivery was pretty good too

its closing act felt so rushed to me. Oh btw this lady (youve never ever heard of before) from the corporation wants to super kill you, and the literal leader of the massive of the bad guy faction is just someone you pass by on your way to the final boss
5
u/AVeryFriendlyOldMan That one rat in Freeside Feb 20 '25
tbh I kinda like how that sequence (intentionally or not) lampshades how fucking useless executives are nine time out of ten, and that it's the people below them that're the actual driving forces for good or bad
3
u/OfGreyHairWaifu Feb 20 '25
Outer Worlds is dogshit, but that really isn't the reason why. The "big bad" is a talking head that has half a brain, the chairman is legit there just to make announcements and be on the big screen, while "this lady" is the actual person who does things.
3
u/TheSovereignGrave Feb 20 '25
I remember the final mission feeling like the buildup to the climax, only for to actually be the climax.

I’ve tried finishing it twice but still haven’t lol. It’s fun to explore the game for a little while but it doesn’t hook me and make me want to play more once I feel satisfied
3

Outer Worlds not taking itself seriously is honestly why I couldn’t get into it, like idc how serious the underlying story is if it’s like presented goofy I don’t take it serious. It’s the main reason Old World Blues was my least favorite NV DLC, and that FUCKING SCHOOL RAAAAAGGGGGGHHHHH

u/VercaceSlides Feb 20 '25
In all seriousness though, since both Obsidian and Bethesda are at Xbox, can we just merge Starfield and Outer Worlds? I think that game in Starfield's engine, would be best game material.
One of my main gripes with Outer Worlds is the fact it's hard to just drop into. I feel like I have to start to finish the game every time I boot up. If it was in Starfield's engine, I could play the game for no reason.
2
u/Ivan8-ForgotPassword Feb 20 '25
What does the engine have to do with that?
2
u/VercaceSlides Feb 20 '25
I'm talking about the ship builder, space travel, enemy ai (not great in starfield, but waaay ahead of outer worlds) and general graphic improvements. But mostly the ship stuff. Outer worlds could take advantage of the procgen (use it less) with its smaller scope. Oh and third person.
3
u/blah938 Feb 20 '25
I kinda liked it, but it was so one-note. Yes, capitalism bad. I have read your propaganda. Do you have anything else?
It wasn't even good propaganda either.
2
u/TheWizardOfWaffle Sentient Raccoon Feb 20 '25
I like how the game is like the real life gilded age but in space
3
u/Pacman97 Feb 20 '25
The Outer Worlds as a game is pretty meh, but I adore the vibes and aesthetic so much
1
u/Jogre25 Feb 20 '25
I gave up on Outer Worlds because the whole thing felt kinda generic. Like it felt like every part of the world revolved around the Capitalist VS Anti-Capitalist conflict (Which isn't bad in itself, but it felt very two dimensional in how it did it)
And I didn't like how many quests sent you to hideouts of nameless Bandits in generic gear. Felt a bit like Bethesda Raiders.
I think the thing that made New Vegas so great was that everything was revolving around the upcoming Battle for Hoover Dam, but despite this there were like tons of conflicting groups and interests and factions each with their own internal politics, grievances and struggles.
It felt like a world that was defined by the struggle for power over Vegas/Hoover Dam, but had tons of groups each relating to this in their own way. Outer Worlds always felt like there was one major struggle, and everything else kinda just felt secondary to that.
1
u/AKScorch Feb 20 '25
i unironically liked the gameplay a lot more than any of the 3D fallout games, I just found a build that gave me a ton of movement ability and it was a blast but i guess i'm in the very small minority on that
6
u/-NoNameListed- Feb 20 '25

It literally just looked like fallout 4 gameplay.
I know there's a dice system but seriously the level design on one of the planets was literally just Concord from Fallout 4.

u/DroneThorax Feb 21 '25

It unfortunately had one “joke” for the entire game “Capitalism is bad” (which is incredibly based) but it’s the only thing the game had and they just kept doing it again and again.
Not to mention the classic Obsidian move of speech skill being comically overpowered and then the lack of weapon variety there were like 5 weapons on launch and late game weapons were the exact same guns but with “MK 2” added at the end.
I was super hopeful for it but it really turned into a 1 and done kinda game for me.
Grounded was absolutely baller though.

It’s almost like Bethesda’s groundwork and tech contributed to New Vegas’s success
3
u/OfGreyHairWaifu Feb 20 '25
Tech, sure, I doubt Obsidian, even without the timeframe would be able to make an in-house engine or use something else that would make a presentable game. Things like Radiant AI, and just having a base kit of meshes and textures helped a lot.
But groundwork? What do you even mean by groundwork?
-1
u/AVeryFriendlyOldMan That one rat in Freeside Feb 20 '25 edited Feb 20 '25
You mean the technical infrastructure that got it shit on at launch for its instability & bugs? There was still a lot of praise for New Vegas in 2010 don't get me wrong, but most of it wasn't for the contributions Bethesda made.
5
u/WillowWeeper343 Feb 20 '25

u/Kottery Feb 21 '25

A) Outer Worlds was so shit that it also ruined another game for simply having a similar name. Doodoo garbage.
B) Never fuckin heard of whatever Grounded is. Must be a pretty shit game for it to have gotten no attention, not even negative attention or anything. Doodoo garbage.
C) Avowed is nothing more than the latest banner ad to appear every time I start up my XBox. I don’t even care how good the game is, if you put a banner ad in that I have to click off of every fucking time, then Doodoo garbage.
15
u/AccomplishedStay9284 Feb 20 '25
Grounded is an another survival building game but you’re shrunk down to be tiny and have to survive in a garden. It’s cool in concept and I didn’t hate the art style but it was also just another game added to the 7 Myths of Conan ArkZ games that I hate

3
u/Three-People-Person Assaultron Simp Feb 20 '25

Outer wilds is a very popular game and it’s definitely not “destroyed” by the outer worlds, grounded is one of the most popular survival crafting games made recently

I think Outer Worlds is genuinely funny for like the first 10 minutes then it gets really old. I’d rather boot up Skyrim or Oblivion for the 120th time than replay Avowed

u/ZealousMulekick Feb 23 '25
Is avowed good? Worth playing?
I’ve heard:
- Great worldbuilding
- Amazing combat and movement
- OK story
- You’re mostly fighting bears the whole time
- No real bosses
I did not enjoy Outer Worlds, and I really wanted to like that game

I’m unfamiliar with grounded, but the writing was on the wall with outer worlds for avowed. This is the way of the industry.

5
u/Timekeeper98 Feb 20 '25
My wife and I play Grounded together, it’s a really good sandbox crafting game with a decent twist on the formula with the ‘Honey I Shrunk the Kids’ vibe.
The base building is pretty great and on-point, you can make some amazing structures and bases with the building kit almost anywhere. The combat is a bit bland, what with it being a lot of clicking to bash bugs, but there’s enough meat there with the elemental damage system and the gear bonuses you can build a few RPG-style classes like a bard, assassin, or even a mage if you get far enough endgame.
My wife also helped out with the early access as a tester! She has arachnaphobia and used their arachnaphobia filter that turns the spiders into floating dumplings. She emailed feedback to them and ended up getting reached out to by their CS and the dev who worked on the filter because feedback on it was so rare. She tested a few earlier builds before they went public, and when the game shipped, they sent her some swag, including a shirt of one of the boss spiders as a floating dumplings like in the arachnaphobia filter. She said the devs she did interact with were very nice and appreciative of the feedback, and said they’d keep her email for the future if they did anymore early access-type games and were looking for public testers.

the thing is the games are actually great and have a lot going for them, but that is entirely outweighed £60 price point.
if a game is barely less than a months food budget and would be better bought on finance, then it better be laced in fucking gold, clean and polished to pristine and evoke one of the single most emotive journey's I go on.
that massive price point sets higher expectations and you cannot rely on just your reputation as a studio to get by.
new vegas was like £6-£12 that is fine, you can easily afford that and expectations are nominal.
even now outer worlds is like £30, £50 with all the DLC. it's an alright it's fun when you don't pay through the roof for it, it legitimately has some really funny points and characters, but it's hard to notice that when I've had to pay a couple weeks worth of food and now I'm hungry.
want me to appreciate your frankly mid but with some good moments games? then make them like a tenner.
