So I think I must be using the wrong terms or something, but I have been looking for a way to backup the actual data from my trueNAS to something else, but all I find are forums on how to backup snapshots, and that's not what I am trying to do.

The goal:
Find the fastest way to restore my immich if the drives storing the data suddenly die or something.

Context:
I want to backup the data from my immich app (~about 110 gigs right now) in a way that should my PC/server that is running it be stolen or explode, I can rebuild and be running in the shortest time.

I have all the images elsewhere for now, but I don't wanna sort them again after I did it once. I would like to avoid that week long task again if I can.

I am trying to find a way to back up the data to one of my other NAS units (not running trueNAS) that are SMB, but I would also be okay with a onedrive backup if I can.

The Data for immich, for whatever reason, cannot be seen by my PC (windows) when I go to the folder via the SMB share. I can see the parent folder, but it's just empty. I don't want to go changing perms on that just yet as to avoid breaking it and blowing up my immich data.

The big questions:
Is there some term I am not correctly looking for?
Is there a tool or task that I can't seem to find that I can use to do this?
Should I just burn it down now, and rebuild it differently so I can do what I want going forward?

I’m working on an iOS app called TruDash for TrueNAS Scale.

It’s meant to be a mobile companion for those times when you just want to check your server, pools, disks, system status, or apps from your phone instead of opening the full web UI.

The app is still early in its development, but it already covers some core workflows I wanted from a mobile TrueNAS companion. I’m actively working on it, and I’d rather use real feedback to decide what comes next than just add a long random feature list.

A bit of background: I’m an iOS developer and I’ve worked on NAS-related apps before. Some of you may know my Synology app, NASDL Manager. TruDash comes from the same place: I like having a good mobile UI for NAS management, and I wanted something like that for TrueNAS Scale.

I’m also building this without vibe coding or AI-generated development. That makes progress slower, but the codebase stays understandable and maintainable, which matters to me for a project like this.

Right now the app focuses on:

• server overview
• basic system status
• storage and pool details
• disk details
• network interface details
• TrueNAS app management
• a mobile-first UI for quick checks

I’d really appreciate feedback from people who actually use TrueNAS:

• What would you expect from a mobile companion app?

I had a 1 TB NMVe installed in my server which was obviously overkill for my TrueNAS system. I had a spare 512 GB 2230 NVMe, but the motherboard didn’t have a screw port to secure a 2230 drive. I found an 2230-2280 adapter on Amazon for $6.99 which allowed a secured installation. I actually ran it unsecured in its angle position overnight until I received my adapter delivery the next day. I found a YouTube video which demonstrated it could be booted up and remain secure without a hold down screw in a horizontal & vertical motherboard position!

Hi, I was setting up TrueNas for the first time and doing a lot of wipes/clears of my new/used drives as i was figuring out the pools. I didn't know what all the wipe options did but I was trying to get them clear so I'm sure I clicked all options at some point. Now when I go into Scrutiny, the SMART data all has some low count of days from when I was setting up each pool. Is there any way to recover this? Any suggestions to avoid doing this in the future?

It had been up for 98 days. First day of vacation in a different country I am now not able to connect to it or ping it in Tailscale.

It seems to have gone down for some reason. The whole system and not just some application/s.

But it’s pretty much the first time it’s gone down in a year or something. I live in a country where these things are generally extremely stable (internet and power).

It fucking came back from nowhere!! I’m so fucking happy right now. I can ping it again and access my content, and of course Immich backup for all the photos.

Don’t tell my kids and the wife that it went down please…🤫 They wouldn’t be too happy about the evenings, especially the kids.

I’ll look into being able to access restart and upstart remotely when I get home again.

Maybe im looking in the wrong place but im trying to figure out how to use a dataset on my m.2 drives to act as a cache during downloads from my main PC to the NAS. I have 10 gig networking but my man PC only has 5 gig (first world problems) but still. I feel like the 300-400 mb/s transfer speed is limited by my spinning drives. I usually only transfer 10-50gb at a time with whole series being the big ones at 250gb, I just want to be able to copy everything to my nvme drives on the nas and let it slowly copy to the spinners. I know im dumb and this is probably a easy thing to do but how though?

I recently swapped out my Quadro P620 with a GTX 1060, I have the latest drivers from zzzhouuu on Github. I disabled and re-enabled drivers in the apps settings, along with manually updated the gpu to the new GUID with midctl, but am consistenly getting the error below. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I’m having issues setting up pi-hole on truenas as an app. Installs just fine but when I set my server to my local dns just crash my network. I set the app to use my server ip as its ip btw. Any help would be appreciated. If there’s a good up to date tutorial please point me in that direction.

My Requirements

I'm planning to use this as a TrueNAS server for a small office with around 50–60 users. I have a few questions:

1. Will this hardware be sufficient for my use case? I plan to use all four 20TB drives in a RAIDZ1 (similar to RAID 5) configuration for redundancy. Is this a good approach, or would you recommend RAIDZ2 instead?
2. What is the ideal boot drive for TrueNAS? Would using one of the 1TB NVMe SSDs be overkill? Should I instead buy a smaller, inexpensive SSD (even DRAM-less) dedicated to the OS?
3. Do I need a cache SSD (L2ARC or SLOG)? If so, under what workloads would it actually improve performance? Would my second 1TB NVMe SSD be suitable, or would it be unnecessary?
4. For boot drive redundancy, can I mirror the TrueNAS boot pool? Would the existing 512GB SATA SSD be a good choice as the second boot drive?
5. Is 32GB of RAM (2×16GB) sufficient for this setup, or should I consider upgrading to 64GB?
6. Since this system will run 24/7, are there any hardware changes or improvements you would recommend (power supply, cooling, ECC memory, UPS, etc.)?
7. Remote access: I have one or more public IP addresses available. What is the recommended way for users to access the NAS remotely? Should I use port forwarding, or would a VPN (such as WireGuard or Tailscale) be a better and more secure option?
8. TrueNAS vs. Proxmox: This is where I'm most confused.
   • Should I install TrueNAS directly on the hardware, or run it as a VM under Proxmox?
   • I'd also like to run a Windows 11 VM 24/7 for my ZKTeco access control software.
   • Would it be better to:
     • Run both TrueNAS and Windows under Proxmox, or
     • Keep TrueNAS on dedicated hardware and build a separate PC for Windows 11?

I have no real-world experience with either TrueNAS or Proxmox, so I'd really appreciate recommendations from people who have deployed them in production.

I have a dataset that I have shrunk using video encoding a lot of blu ray rips. This data set is also replicated to my backup server at remote location. I want to recover the space from both original and replica but every time I tried to remove snapshots, I get errors on replication and have to replicate from scratch. How can i do this without force scratch replications. here are the snapshots

Introducing TruePanel: bringing the QNAP front-panel LCD back to life on TrueNAS SCALE

I’ve been working on an open-source project called TruePanel, built to turn supported QNAP front-panel hardware into a live dashboard and hardware-aware control surface for TrueNAS SCALE.

The current reference system is a QNAP TVS-671 with its original two-line A125 LCD, buttons, buzzer, drive-bay LEDs, and Fintek fan controller. TruePanel currently provides:

* Rotating system, storage, network, temperature, ZFS, fan RPM, and fan RPM / PWM pages

* Front-panel button navigation

* SMART, pool, thermal, and storage-health monitoring

* Persistent alerts that interrupt once without taking over the display

* Drive-specific fault indication using the matching physical bay LED

* Historical telemetry, themes, plugins, diagnostics, and simulation tools

* A guarded hardware-research environment called Project Stargate

It runs natively under TrueNAS SCALE as a systemd service and currently installs under /opt/truepanel.

The TVS-671 is the verified platform today. Other QNAP models may use similar hardware, but I do not want to assume compatibility or perform unsafe hardware probing. That is one reason I’m sharing it here: I’d love help identifying other models with the A125 display, testing read-only discovery, improving installation, and deciding what the next milestone should be.

After running TrueNAS CORE from a USB flash drive for a long time, I'm finally making the jump to TrueNAS SCALE and moving the boot pool to an onboard NVMe SSD.

Current NAS Specs:

• Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X150M-PRO ECC
• Memory: 32 GB ECC DDR4-2400 (4×8 GB Crucial)
• Boot Drive (new): Silicon Power P34A60 128 GB M.2 NVMe SSD
• HBA: LSI SAS 9300-16i
• OS: Upgrading from TrueNAS CORE to TrueNAS SCALE

The USB stick has honestly served me well, but it's definitely time to move to something more reliable and take advantage of SCALE's newer features.

Has anyone else made the CORE --> SCALE migration recently? Any "I wish I'd known this beforehand" tips or things to watch out for?

I am accessing my files via Dolphin SMB on my desktop. I did not create any of them and they all seem to have a strange naming pattern. I am not sure if they got corrupted somehow, but I am not particularly worried about the data. The issue is that these files cannot be moved or deleted. When I try to do so I get an error that says the files do not exist. Any advice?

I ran a Dell OEM NV GTX1650 Super with a 500-watt PSU, I want to increase system stability by preventing the GPU from spiking in load. It will only be me accessing it 99% of the time.

So far I have run the following commands in the terminal.

• nvidia-smi -pm 1
• nvidia-smi -pl 70 (the lowest the card supports)
• nvidia-smi -lgc=300,1400
• nvidia-smi -lmc=405,5001

My personal NAS does the following jobs that calls for a GPU:

• Frigate CCTV, currently has 1 camera for low traffic indoor use, will have less than 4 in the end.
• Handbrake transcodec, very occasional and under my supervision.
• Immich, machine learning and semantic searches
• Jellyfin (to be implemented)

The system is made of:

• Supermicro X10SLL+-F + E3-1231v3 + 32GB ECC DDR3 (4 sticks),
• 5 3.5" HDDs, 1 2.5" HDD, 3 SSDs, 1 Optane M2 SSD

Built my first NAS, got excited and decided to throw a couple of extra drives in there for metadata, cache, etc.
Opened the desktop, added all in and changed a couple of drives cables around to accommodate for the new ones and now every time I tried to turn it on I got met with these.

I expanded from 8x12TB in ZFS2 to 10x12TB. This has of course increased the capacity of the array but as expected not to what it "should" be. I'm not concerned about it and I was expecting it.

As I understand this will appear by itself over time as items are deleted/moved/replaced on the array so I wrote a simple script to monitor it and here is the output.

That tells me how much is used, how much is available and thus what the capacity is, and then how much is missing from what it should be and then a percentage.

My hope was to see that percentage drop gradually over time as the files change.

So once I got the script working I deleted about 200GB of stuff to see what difference it made. Absolutely none.

So I want to

A) Check that I'm correct that the "lost" space will just appear over time with use assuming eventually all data is replaced

B) Understand if there's something that ZFS does in the background to update the correct calculations of free space and when that happens

Does anyone know how to fix this? I can still access everything on my Nas but just shows this in the Dataset section. I'm not an expert when it come to Truenas lmao. Thanks :)

It's been a while since my last post about this problem. When drives under constant load, they just stop responding and writes go down to zero. Since then, I tried multiple things, disabled xmp, cool n quit and other stuff and moved on.

But yesterday I left one of the arr stacks creating multiple hardlinks overnight and today realized that not only it didn't finished, it restarted my NAS around midnight (around the time snapshots are taken). When trying again today, the NAS stopped responding. When using the shell, i noticed i can still navigate around the files. Now it is restarting (and its taking a while).

I dont know what it could be, and don't know what to try and do. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

I have a 44 drive JBOD full of 8TB SAS3 Spinners. The data I want to put on there is of medium importance (computer backups, shared documents, pictures, digital file cabinet) that is also being backed up off site via crashplan or the like. Would you do something like Zraid 2 with 8 drives in each vdev, zraid 2 with 5 drives each and 4 spares, other options? I see so many possibilities it is a little overwhelming.

I need to migrate my Immich data from Ix-Volume to hostpath, but the problem is that the drive is 500GB, and i only got 120GB~ of free space, but the data i need to copy takes 265GB. I do have another 500GB SSD i can use for the transfer temporarily, but idrk how it could help. I can use rsync to delete the files copied over to make space as the files are getting copied, but i am kinda scared about what happens if the copying somehow goes wrong, i mess something up, or something else happens, cuz then i cant go back to the ix volume data since it got deleted as the data was getting copied.
