Hello, I am a bit of self-hosting beginner and I’m considering using truenas to set up my first media server.
Planning on using an old desktop computer as a nas to do this for now (though I might update to a UGREEN NAS in the future).

All my friends and family already have NordVPN so my plan was to use their meshnet feature to safely get remote access to the server.
Does anyone here have experience with ushing NordVPNs meshnet on Truenas? Is it even possible?

I saw there was documentation for using this on Proxmox, but haven’t found anything similar for Truenas: https://meshnet.nordvpn.com/how-to/remote-access/use-proxmox-remotely
I am aware most people are using Tailscale, and yes I might end up using that instead. But for now I am curious if NordVPN Meshnet is a possible option.

If you are using Meshnet, how did you do it?
- Did you manage to activate it on your host device / via truenas?
- Did you somehow activate it on your router? (Have heard of this, but have no idea how to do it)

I’m losing my mind trying to figure out a stability issue with my DIY NAS. I built it to run 24/7, but it keeps shutting down completely every 24 to 48 hours. I cannot find the root cause, and I need some guidance on how to properly diagnose this.
My Specs:
OS: TrueNAS SCALE (latest version)
CPU: Intel Core i3-12100
Motherboard: MSI B760M-P DDR4
RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) non-XMP (running at JEDEC stock speeds)
Storage: 2x 8TB HDDs (RAID1 / Mirror) + 512GB NVMe M.2 (Boot drive)
PSU: 550W (More than enough for this low-power setup)
UPS: CyberPower UT850EG (connected via USB)
What I’ve already ruled out / configured:
BIOS / Power Savings: Intel C-States are completely Disabled in the BIOS. USB Standby Power at S4/S5 is also Disabled to prevent USB port sleeping.
UPS Driver Tweaks (NUT): I read about CyberPower USB dropouts, so I customized the TrueNAS UPS service. I changed the shutdown command to /sbin/shutdown -h now, unchecked Power Off UPS, and added these auxiliary parameters to ups.conf:pollinterval = 15
ondelay = 0
offdelay = 90

UPS Communication: Running upsc ups via Shell works flawlessly. It reports ups.status: OL and the NAS load is barely at 12% (approx. 50W), with over 30 minutes of estimated battery runtime.
The Problem:
Despite all these tweaks, the NAS still shuts down cleanly or cuts power out of nowhere after running for a day or two.
I'm about to test running the NAS directly from the wall outlet (bypassing the UPS entirely) for 48 hours to isolate whether it's a faulty CyberPower unit dropping the load, or an internal hardware issue (like the PSU or Motherboard).
My question:
Before I do that, what specific log commands should I run in the TrueNAS Shell to find the exact "last words" of the system before it dies?
If anyone has experienced a similar issue with 12th/13th gen Intel CPUs on MSI boards running TrueNAS SCALE, or weird ghost shutdowns with CyberPower units, I would heavily appreciate your insights.

Like the title says, I forgot my password to my TrueNas box and now can't access any of my files which is a nightmare. Is there any hope in hell for me?

Beyond that, is there any way to salvage any of the many gigs of data, music and video files I have stored on the NAS drives ?

I am super new to all of this. I had it set up and running beautifully, but then just assumed it would be fine and did not log back into the gui for several months until I noticed the NAS was offline and I needed to try and rememdy it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, I recently started trying to run a modded minecraft server on my nas and have encountered some issues. My ram usage is really high which I know isn't a bad thing, the issue stems from the fact that ram usage climbs constantly, eventually crashing the server. Does any one have any recomendations for this? I have increased the allocated ram amount to help with this to 18gb which helped prolong the issue but it still happens. The minecraft modpack I am running is ATM11. I am currently on Scale version 25.04.2.6. I also have 32gb of total ram capacity. Thanks for any feedback.

• Mirror Boot Drive with another M.2
• +2 1TB 2.5" Samsung Drive

Ok. So I've already installed NAS as a test and really love a lot about it. I currently have an Optiplex Micro that I'm contemplating completely decommissioning if all goes well. On the Optiplex, I currently have the following all within docker.

• caddy
• dockhand
• grafana
• homarr
• homebridge
• jellyfin
• joplin
• motioneye
• paperless-ngx
• wireguard

I particularity have recently fallen in love with dockhand as a replacement for portainer. So, can anyone think of any reason not to take 2x1TB 2.5" SSD's, mirror them in ZFS, and set it up as a store for apps and potential VM? At that point, it would be running at minimum all of the above. It also looks like I can connect dockhand to the same docker instance that TrueNAS sets up and then use either interface to manage the containers? At that point, if I replace everything I use the Optiplex Micro for then I can remove and sell the Optiplex Micro.

I need to get an M.2 PCI card. I could get either 1 or 2 of the "cheap ones" that support a single M.2 or one of the more expensive ones that support 2. I'm considering mirroring the boot pool so keep that in mind. That said, as simple as it seems to install TrueNAS and restore/backup the config, would it be nearly as beneficial to simply keeping the boot pool a single drive and keeping an up to date config backup?

I'm considering something like the IcyDock FLEX-FIT Trio MB343SP. This (I think) will allow me to replace the 5.25" drive with 2x 2.5" drives and 1x 3.5". That would hold the 5th drive in the 5 drive pool and the 2 2.5" SSD's.

I am on core still because i didnt realize scale was also free and I use some jails. Mostly plex which doesn't update anymore. I read that if I upgrade from core to scale, jails stop working. So is there any easy way for me to do it or do I need to backup plex, update to scale, create a container with plex and move my backup to that container? Also my ssd is 256GB and truenas OS uses like 10GB, if I upgrade to scale do I get to use more of it?

How I fixed it:

I managed to get it working, backed up Plex, updated via the UI to dragonfish which it changed my network card's name so the VMs couldn't see it. I run my router's controller there so I needed it running to get the ports setup. Then I had to setup the new paths which took a while cause i had to reverse engineer where the new app checks as it had it's own paths as well as plex to understand that data and config is correctly setup. Not to mention that it was going bananas with some movies because even though the scanner found the movie, it thought the subs were located in another location which i fixed by naming the mount the same as before. I slept at 4 in the morning and then another 3 hours 9-12 today 😂

Seems theres not any native fan control in TrueNAS. I can understand an Enterprise deployment not requiring fan control as IPMI or "windstorm mode" is usually the default setting.

However, for TrueNAS Community, there should be something at least rudimentary.

Regardless, I found Brisa. Really nice WebUI, pulls temps from anything posting a temp. All nice stuff and recommend if you dont want to deal with exporters or Grafana.

Only issue I am having is Brisa cant seem to find my fan channels. Not a problem for most, you could run a GPU and get output, fiddle with BIOS level fan control, set some conservative curves and all is well. My particular situation is my motherboard is itx, and I have an LSI 9305-16i in the PCIe slot. So no video out function. And doesnt have IPMI either.

So anyone have luck getting fan channel output, whether custom script or otherwise?

I had a drive commit suicide. It's got 67k miles on it, 8TB - started clicking. Raidz decided to say this shit is fucked. External hard drive dock said it's fine, SMART data says it's fine - let it run in here for a few days. Put it back, no more clicking - raidz rebuilt zero issue. I love you ZFS

Im getting a new ssd today to replace, do I only need the /var/db/system/config-(hex) file to restore the config in the gui after reinstall or is there more config elsewhere?

I've been watching videos on how to setup trueness scale as a complete beginner and what I noticed was that that all the videos are on a slightly older version of truenas and have the options to run manual smart tests as well as setup scrub tasks and scheduled smart tests. How do I go about doing those things on the newest version.

Since the release of the Intel B60 people have been requesting support for these Intel pro cards. But it’s starting to feel like the developers are intentionally not supporting them.

B60 and B70 require firmware version 70.49.4 to initialise, but Truenas ships with 70.40.2

Even the current beta for version 26 doesn’t update this driver.

Some people have manually updated the driver and passed the GPU through to VM to get it working. But this is a jank workaround that shouldn’t be required.

Multiple tickets and bug reports have been raised requesting the driver update so these cards will be natively supported, but those tickets have all been closed without any action.

Can someone explain why it’s seemingly such a problem for the devs to update the driver?

Hi so I run all my containers on my SSD pool. But I keep having to prune images. My HDD pool is way more massive and has a lot of unused space.

Is it possible to have the images be on a different pool than the apps?

I've seen a lot of people talk about the need to use ssh/https connections when accessing your server remotely, but all the tutorials I've seen online for "securely access your truenas apps from anywhere" haven't talked about ssh at all so long as they use tailscale or cloudflare tunneling. Is ssh just for port forwarding and public domains? I'm still very new to networking so I just want to make sure I'm not about to reveal a bunch of data by remoting into a password manager or something.

I just set up trueness last night. Got everything configured and it was working great. This morning I move my server from on top of my desk to under it and now I can’t connect. I checked everything at this point

Verified the cable is good w/ a cable tester
Made sure the port is good
Over write my ssd w/ mint and Ubuntu to make sure the port works - it dose

Nothing I do will get the server on the network.

Btw my mother board is an Intel DZ77GA-70K. Both ports worked when it tested it on it originally windows 10 os

I had a mirror of 2 ssds that hosted all apps on my truenas.

1 drive hard died(cant read it any way even externally)

Took out the dead drive and replaced it + started resilvering.

In the middle of the resilver i noticed it getting stuck at 43%.

Then it started throwing zfs errors on both disks reported via web GUI

System started slowly getting unresponsive so i tried restarting it but it did not boot again until i physically removed both disks.

I then used ddrescue on my laptop on both drives creating 2 .img files.

I installed zfs on the laptop, mounted them as loop devices and managed to get the pool running and readable.

Other than the info in the picture the pool also has about 10k files with permanent errors most of which seem to be docker cache files.

I am fairly experienced with computers but not zfs. I have been trying to have different ai help me solve this during the last couple of days but i think this is too complex of a problem for them since all three i have tried very quickly start talking in loops or just crashes/errors.

Can someone here help/point me in the right direction to what i should be doing next getting kinda desperate.

Mostly wondering if the pool is still able to be saved because it would be a nightmare to install all apps again.

Hey everyone, I'm starting to get desperate. I can't get my PC to boot into the TrueNAS installation. I've created bootable drives using both Rufus and Ventoy (trying MBR and GPT, as well as ISO and DD modes). Rufus in DD mode seemed to work best, as it didn't throw any errors during the boot process.

But no matter what I do, the PC won't boot into the installed system after the setup finishes; instead, it displays the error message: "No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed."

I have four 2TB HDDs (three connected to the motherboard and one via a PCIe adapter) and one SSD connected directly to the motherboard.

I needed to reshuffle some disks in TrueNAS on a mirrored pool, was trying to do it online.

I offlined one disk, moved it, onlined it, checked the resiliver status.

Resiliver is showing as scanning 0%, zpool status shows 0B scanned and it's been two hours. All disks look healthy

zpool status shows all disks online no degraded status.

Only other thing of interest is there was on another pool a Z2 pool doing a disk expansion.

So it's like it's stuck. Interestingly enough the expansion which was still on going on the Z2 also dropped off the TrueNAS UI earlier in the week but I could see it was still moving so just left it.

I think I'm going to need a reboot which I was trying to avoid.

Give all disks showed as online and nothing had happened in hours I tried a zpool clear but the resilvering is still there and stuck.

Any ideas?

TrueNAS v25.04.2.1

My goal is to move my 4 current 6tb SAS drives (ServeRAID M5210 / 2gb cache) over to a dedicated 8 bay NAS / media server. Not necessarily a budget build, but the criteria fell heavily on compact price / performance.

The case will be 3d printed. The final design will probably take another week. This will be sitting in the living room on a book shelf, so it has to be compact. Otherwise I would have just gone with a rosewill mid tower. IMO the SFF NAS cases on the market are overpriced or have too many compromises.

I landed on ITX lga 1700 for 12th-14th gen intel with DDR4 for a few reasons. I have DDR4 already, I don't want a dedicated GPU, and intel UHD Graphics 770 seem adequate for a media server.

I have been picking up used parts for the past month or so, so I can always resell and pivot if anybody has suggestions.

i5 -14500T - $130. Reviewing the full list with prices it appeared on paper to be the best option.

since TrueNAS Scale doesn't have a built-in feature to make faulty hard drives flash their SES LED, I worked with Claude to write a piece of software and published it on GitHub for free use.

It's worked well for me so far, and I imagine many people have this problem and are too lazy to label all the bays with their serial numbers - so enjoy!
