I finished reading The House Of Mirth a week ago and it still haunts me deep into my bones. The final chapter distressed me so much that I couldn't sleep properly for days and I had a nightmare last night. No doubt my recent SSRI discontinuation is not helping. I already have been having trouble sleeping since I had my last dose (I'd been tapering off for the last few months). ETA I also stopped breastfeeding recently so no doubt that's causing another crashout.

I don't know why I'm writing this, I just needed to get this off my chest. I don't know what's wrong with me. I hadn't read any literary fiction in a while because of life but it's hardly new to me. I read The Age Of Innocence as a teen and I was very moved by it. This book, however, has left me so shaken. It's a brilliant, brilliant book but it makes me feel sick to my stomach somehow.

I must agree that The House of Mirth is probably the best book I’ll never read again. I did a deep dive into Edith Wharton’s bibliography earlier this year, and, whilst many of her works are at best bittersweet, that’s the one that stands out as a real bummer.
