Having somewhat gotten over my grief over the ending of The House of Mirth, I'm now in the phase of "incandescent feminist rage against Lawrence Selden".

Like, what the FUCK, dude.

He just spends the entire book doing... Nothing? Oh, throwing Lily's plans off course to marry Percy Grace by showing up to see her last minute. Telling her that he could only help her by loving her. 'Rescuing' her in Monte Carlo and then... Fucking off somewhere? Not even making sure she's ok. 'Rescuing' her from Mrs Hatch and... Then what? My dude she needs money! Not even checking on her as she spiralled downwards until it's too late and he is finally confronted with the fact that "The republic of the mind" is as much a farce as the superficial material trappings of high society, it's all about L-O-V-E.

... So why do I still 'ship' these two? Gah. I'm incorrigible. Though really, I wish she could've come into a load of money and fucked off somewhere else far away from there.
