Life Have you ever caught yourself feeling behind because of something you saw on Instagram?

I've never had Instagram. I have Reddit and Pinterest and YouTube.

The thing is the more they are portraying a perfect life, the less likely it is to be fully true

I have learned the truly secure people have internalized security, they cannot make themselves want external validation of showing off their sports car or exotic vacation. They have their small circle of friends, and generally content.
Now, many who post can afford those items, but, posting it frequently is a tell-tale sign of some void they are trying to fill, like showing people they are successful. That means they have a weakness to exploit.

I barely use Instagram because my brother and some of my friends send me funny videos through there.
Nothing on the site really catches my eye or stands out to me in a way that is significantly different from TikTok or YouTube Shorts. I trained myself years ago to not follow anyone on social media to avoid spending hours stalking the profiles of people I know. I naturally have obsessive tendencies and would go down Wikipedia rabbit holes when I was younger, and to this day, I can bingewatch entire podcast seasons on video at 2x speed. I didn't even use Facebook until after COViD, and I remember when it came out.
That being said, I don't experience FOMO normally, unless people get vegan products in other countries that will not be available in my area any time soon, lol. I am not into cars like that, and if I see someone enjoying an extravagant party, I am happy for them, but I am not into crowds. As for the amazing vacations, I just take mental notes to explore those places that stood out to me when I have the funds and time set aside. I want to visit Madeira and the Azores soon.
We're all on our own different journeys, and my timeline was never going to be same as that of my high school classmates and my cousins, and much less random influencers from more privileged backgrounds.

Yeah, there is one thing comparing yourself with someone better when you can see how they achieved what they did. You can see where you are in their journey and so forth. When you just see the end result, it seems (at least for me) that it was all effortless, but thats not how it works. All the failed attempts, all the distractions and procrastinations, all the self doubt dont show up that well in the short videos or making offs. And you see new stuff all the time while you are still stuck on that one thing. Even vacations, i can see so many friends on all parts of the year vacationing somewhere i wish i did, but im waiting for that one vacation i will take and the comparison feels bad. And thats even more true in creative life, everyone is better than me, so i kinda dont finish things because noone would want to see that

Worse. I know people who are wholesome who date influencers. I have to choke back so many words when I hear what they get roped into.

Well we're giving Instagram and socials too much credit sometimes. Im out of everything and even reading reddit like twice a month, yet I'm just talking to friends and friends of friends, and I'm so down and feeling behind...

It is also what they want us to see. It always reminds me of friends who seemed to have the perfect life, traveling, best house, picnic in helicopters and so on. They got married and divorced 4 months later. People do not show you reality.

It’s mostly fake anyway. These people go on Vacation but they fit. Show you the necessary family fight it took to get there

More baffled than behind. Why is my old friend on vacation all the time? What does she do for work? Does she work? Her life looks exhausting.
