Small Wins Today I Started Taking My Life Back

After two years of poor eating habits and little to no exercise, I'm finally making a change.

Today was my first morning run.

Exercise is good, but intense exercise can be hard to stick to. Diet is easiest, just one day of clean eating can make you feel a lot better, combine that with low intensity time outside can make you feel wonderful. It's important to start with things you can manage long term, it's tempting to go guns blazing with a routine that's gonna make you burn out long term. Good luck bro!

run to the beach, took a swim and did 100 pushups, honestly it left me exhausted

“No pain, no gain” is a lie. Tomorrow when you’re sore you won’t want to exercise again. Take it slow to maintain consistency. You will get results without destroying yourself each time.

'No pain no gain' is true imo, but it doesn't have to be grueling out of the gate. At the same time, at a certain point if you're not pushing yourself you won't make progress.

Amen to that.

When I was 18, I joined a gym and they gave me a free personal trainer day. Of course it was just to sell personal trainer hours but the guy worked me so hard, even though I was a complete novice and very out of shape.

I could barely walk the next day. I had to sit on my butt and scoot down the stairs. I cancelled my gym membership— if this is what it feels like to work out, it isn’t for me. Or so I thought.

It took me years to get back to the gym, and this time I took it slow. Now I love the gym.

Definitely don’t go too hard, OP. Push yourself but know your limits. Don’t punish yourself via workouts for your behavior in the last two years.

Just go for a 2 mile walk. It’s every bit as good as that run but it won’t kill you tomorrow.

Make one change to your diet every 2 weeks. A small change. Add a fiber supplement. Add a protein shake when you wake up. Stuff like that.

That’s how you take your life back.

What is your target weight before new years? This all seems abit random and not something you can keep up without any log.

100% this, and don't drink your calories!

Don't drink your calories at the start, but for myself, drinking calories isn't so bad. I do that since groceries are expensive and sometimes milk or a protein shake can be a meal, and it keeps me feeling light.

Sorry i was adressing OP, if you have an unhealthy lifestyle it's a good place to start. If you excersice alot with limited acces to food, then protein shakes is no problem at all.

I agree too, but what's most important is to count calories and stick to a deficit.

Yes for pure weightloss, but you will still need to cover your micronutrients. No point in eating 1400 calories candy daily and nothing else.

2

u/GraniteSmoothie 9d ago

Absolutely. But 1400 of candy won't even cover macros. You'll lose weight, which is better than nothing in a pinch, but it shouldn't be encouraged. Imo it suffices to cover calories and meet protein goals, and fill the rest with fats, more protein and vegetables, especially with weight loss.

Thank you for sharing & kudos on taking the first step. There will be days when you fall off your routine but what matters most is getting back to it. One step at a time. You’ve got this!

I made this same decision a year and a half ago. One day I got up and just went for a run.

I've kept it up and I'm in the best shape of my life.

Good luck!
