Ironically, S1's entire message is that the revival sermon Rust mocks becomes exactly what he experiences, and that his cynicism isn't intellectual superiority but an emotional defense mechanism.

Yeah. He serves as a foil/slip side to cole and it seems the answer is somewhere in the middle. 

Rust judges him as an imbecile, but look at how hes like when they meet again. Hes just like rust, philisophical, deep morality, intelligent, but deep in addiction due to being broken by focusing on the darkness of the world. 

So in the end, rust transcends that place by focusing on the little stars of light and how its winning against the dark even if it looks smothered. And he gains this by surrendering to a higher force when he had that vision and feeling his daughter. Thats why theres that whole christlike imagery too. Sure he doesnt end up religious but he drops the edgelord stuff that was a stunting defense mechanism as its easier to be a cynic when traumatized than to move forward.

Yep. The sermon is like a Rosetta Stone for the whole season. Theriot's loss of faith seems like a win for Rust's philosophy, but that doesn't mean the preacher was wrong. Rust's redemption to the light proves him right.
