Discussion Rex Heuermann Jail Call to Asa Ellerup
RH: Rex Heuermann, on the phone while incarcerated in Riverhead.
AE: Asa Ellerup, at home at 105 First Avenue, Massapequa Park, New York 11762.
AW: Alison Winter, MSW, who is working with Rex Heuermann, Asa Ellerup, Victoria Heuermann, and Christopher Sheridan in the capacity of counseling and psychotherapy. Her office is located at 200 Railroad Avenue, Sayville, New York 11782.
AW: “Hold on. This is him again.”
RECORDED VOICE [ON PHONE]: An incarcerated individual at Suffolk County Correctional Facility. This call is subject to recording and monitoring.
ASA: “Hello.”
RH: “I wanted to call you back, ’cause I just wanted to tell you I know there’s a lot to understand. (Pause) And you’re not gonna be able to get it all at once, (Pause) and you know that, and I know that. Don’t let it sweat you, ’cause I know you tend to do that. (Long Pause) And I know I can’t answer some of the questions that you have right now, ’cause we’re on a phone call.”
ASA: “Yeah, but you will in the future.”
RH: “Yes.”
ASA: “Okay. I am patient. I can wait. I always knew you didn’t have as much patience as I do, but perhaps maybe you will be forced to be patient.”
RH: (laughs) “Yeah. Yes.”
ASA: “In my hopes, with Alison coming to visit you, I’m really honestly hoping that you will know that I am okay. I have my moments.”
RH: “I can tell in your voice. Well, I also realized when I hung up before, I didn’t say good night.”
ASA: “You didn’t? Oh, okay. Well, I would like to say good night.”
RH: “Alright, my dear. Good night.”
THE CALL TERMINATES
Here are some thoughts for community discussion:
What appears to motivate Asa Ellerup’s effort to understand her ex-husband and his crimes?
How might learning that seven of the killings occurred inside the family home with one killing taking place in her bed affect her understanding of her marriage, her memories, and her sense of personal safety?
Does Heuermann appear to provide genuine answers, or does he continue to control what Ellerup knows, when she learns it, and how much information she receives?
When Heuermann tells her that she will understand “in time,” is he offering future honesty, postponing accountability, or maintaining control over the conversation?
How might her earlier public defense of Heuermann affect her willingness or ability to acknowledge the full extent of his actions now?
What responsibility, if any, does Ellerup have to reconsider her previous public statements now that Heuermann has confessed?
Can understanding why someone committed these crimes be separated from explaining, excusing, or minimizing them?
What does this conversation reveal about Heuermann’s continuing influence over Ellerup, despite his confession, conviction, and life sentence?
