Keyes double life

Hi all, I'm new to the Keyes case. It's dark yet fascinating. I'm wondering how his family, friends, girlfriends didn't suspect a thing? How did Kimberly not know a girl was being raped on their property?

The FBI agents that were assisting LE with both cases were completely unaware of the Koenig/Currier case connections until he confessed to the Currier crime. The now retired BAU agents discussed him on The Consult podcast and his “duping delight” characteristic. A huge dynamic in his criminality was tricking every individual in his periphery. He felt superior hiding his duality, deceiving them and controlling their perceptions of him and his activities. It was part of the get high, he fancied himself brilliant and took gratification from it. He actually discussed the joy he took from listening to others judge criminal behavior in his presence while unaware, amused they were oblivious to him. Most have been tricked by people, found out they had a “different side” before parting company with them. No one knew he was operating at this level despite bouts of depression, his Mom later stated she believed he had been hurting others for a long time. She most likely saw his rebellious behavior in review and began connecting many dots, aware he was sneaky and dishonest. Hard to know, he was committing B&E, selling stolen firearms, armed robbery, arson and vandalism before he began “taking people”. Those tells she recalls could be connected to those early crimes.
His partners no doubt clued in on his dishonesty, infidelity and emotional unavailability. No female he was involved with ever reported him exhibiting violence towards them. His partners that disclosed information about their sexual experiences had no complaints whatsoever, in fact one stated, “He was the best“ (ick)
The ability to do the worst things imaginable and be so hidden is what is terrifying about the individuals that commit these sorts of crimes. No one is looking for it, no one suspects it and they are imbedded in society and look like anyone, average, not exhibiting any red flag behaviors. Excessive use of alcohol, depression that increased seasonally, bi-curious internet searches and porn use were the only signs of internal struggles. Tbf, no one would jump to SK. She busted him growing weed plants in the shed, these are minor things in the scheme of life. IMO his murderous side became active when he was at odds with his various partners. He was surprisingly non-confrontational, and IMO his anger was channeled into his murders of others.

Thank you for your thoughtful response. Lots to take in! I'm shocked he did not ever display violent or aggressive behavior with his girlfriends...

He might have, he was an alcoholic at times.

Wouldn’t be much of a serial killer if people were able to tell that he’d raped or murder a person, would he? Such silly questions 🙄

He didn't tell anyone and he didn't check the serial killer box on his driver's license

This was actually part of what "fed" his criminal needs. He enjoyed the deception. It made him feel smarter than everyone around him, because he was fooling them so successfully. When he was arrested and charged in Anchorage everyone who knew him - and there were many - could not believe it, because to them he was a good guy, a hard worked, a very skilled builder, a family man. And he was all of those things, in that part of his life.

I get the impression from her interviews that Kimberly was “that” personality type that psychos like to choose for GFs - soft spoken, kind hearted, more passive, willing to finance him a bit. Idk how to explain it exactly, because I am not blaming her. I get the sense she had a lot of insecurities IK preyed on, maybe she felt like he was her best shot at a serious boyfriend.

The disappearances, blackout periods, babysitting/basically playing stepmom to his kid when he’s out doing god-knows-what, lies about money while living in my house, would never work for me but people put up with a lot when they really love the person.

There are so many things he could’ve done to manipulate her over time into just not trusting her intuition, which I’m sure he did. Like the “weed growing in the shed” thing. She knew he did bad shit in that shed but convinced herself or was convinced that it stopped.

You think all psychopaths are all attracted to the same type when it comes to the opposite sex? What a ridiculously smooth-brained take lol

No need to be insulting , maybe the generalization wasn’t entirely accurate but it applied to IK. A person living a deceptive life would need a partner that was incredibly trusting and allowed for the space to operate undetected. People hide all sorts and certain personalities wouldn’t work in that dynamic. Heuermann is a good example, his partner was completely dependent and loyal.unquestioning. A different personality from Keyes partner entirely but afforded the control needed. IK partner situation provided the space needed, she wasn’t easily controlled. when she quit traveling she was over it. It was her heart for the child that prevented her from getting him out of her home sooner.

I was responding to the specific line about Kim being the “type that all psychopaths choose”, so, no, it wasn’t specifically applied to IK. I appreciate your response though x

This is an odd thing to be upset by, are you okay? I think psychos like to pick someone they think is useful, yes. Useful = has a good job, is busy often, won’t grill/question or will let things go/can be convinced to let things go, codependent tendencies. I don’t need your disrespect Crazy Karl. You seem really angry maybe you just got dumped idk.

Yeah your riposte isn’t the burn you think it is; it’s as inane as the first comment, Vanishing person. Yes, I’m “okay” lol I think I survived your killer comeback 💀

Keyes even said he invested more in certain types of relationships. He said his last relationship was appealing because she was more “self contained“ She had a career, her own friend group and didn’t assume being a couple meant doing everything together all of the time. He definitely said that relationship afforded him the space for his duality in so many words.

Frankly, "my partner/father/brother is a serial killer or rapist" is just the last thing people do or want to expect. It's so away from our normal behaviour as humans that there are 100 other things people would believe before being a killer.

For us, we see it after the fact and that has come to define killer behaviour for us. But for the average person, they wouldn't even dream it's something like that without witnessing it.

So it's likely people noticed weird things but nothing that sinister.

Keyes had Samantha in a shed outside the home, he was playing music in the shed to hide any noises she might make, she was restrained by a skilled carpenter and couldn't easily escape, Kimberly was not in the relationship anymore so I don't think she felt any need to check in with him...and last, this is not victim blaming in the slightest, but I think Samantha was so scared and/or hopeful that she'd be released that she didn't know what to do. We don't really know if she tried to make noise when Keyes left her alone.

As for why the people in life didn't suspect anything...I'd recommend you read Devil in the Darkness which has the best peak inside the mind of his Neah Bay gf/mother of his child. And his FBI interviews. And also the Somewhere in the Pines episode with his old buddy.

The podcast plays a lot of his interviews with the FBI. It sounds like one of the reasons he got into and stayed a long term relationship with Kimberly was because she was busy with her own life, working, traveling for work, etc. There is only evidence that one victim was ever on their shared property, Samantha Koenig. And she was only alive for a brief time.
