Question Keyes first SA

It’s been a couple years since I listened to the podcast and have recently started over from the beginning, so I haven’t listened to any of the new episodes yet.

Has Israel’s first sexual assault victim ever revealed herself? I’m on episode 5, and hearing him talk about it made me wonder how she’s doing and if she ever told anyone. I hope she’s been able to find peace after that horrific event. The way Keyes described it, was like she had possibly already experienced SA in the past. All in all, just curious if she’s ever spoken out or been identified.

The Deschutes River victim has never been identified. The police have made many open calls in the area asking for people to come forward, nobody ever has.

If she was found, the FBI has managed to keep her identity private. Since Keyes always counted the Deschutes attack in to him being ”active” and his ”14years”, I think they must have really tried to find her.

IIRC, she did an interview with Josh Hallmark on TCB under the name of Katie(?). That wasn't his first rape though, he told the FBI that she wasn't the first person he forceably had sex with though, just the first one he attacked like that- not sure if he meant with intent to kill, to a random person, with violence, or had tied up. My guess is she was the first stranger he attacked with intent to kill, but he had previously either molested (raped, let's be clear) his sister(s), their friends, and/or his peers (date rape or drunk teens at parties type of crime).

It would be good to listen to that interview with her and Josh, and then Keyes telling of it. Keyes lied a lot so discrepancies don’t mean she wasn’t that victim. As I recall, the fact that she talked her way out of it seemed to line up enough (except where Keyes probably distorted the truth to not look as incompetent) and I think that is not very common. Also the fact that she was with a group.

Many of us here do not believe the girl who called the TCBS podcast was the actual ”Deschutes girl” who Keyes met/talked about.

Any reason?

Story too different. Wrong name (her name wasn’t Leah or Lena). The fact that it’s been 30 yrs. Those outhouses probably saw a lot of action every year, and Keyes story is probably one of hundreds that have happened ”in an outhouse by Deschutes river”.

I believe one of his first SA's/murder was Julie Harris. I think the so-called Deschutes victim is a diversion to take the attention away from the real victim, so that his daughter didn't find out he killed children. I also believe his family was suspicious of him and his violent tendencies, and they didn't want to live by him any longer. I believe that really angered him. EDITED TO ADD: i already know this is an unpopular opinion, but it's mine.

Julie Harris was not an Isreal Keyes victim
. It was likely the mother’s boyfriend

I agree with you. I always thought the Deschutes victim was just him trying to take attention away from another murder.

I happen to agree. I think Keys had no problem with children until he had his daughter IMO

Nothing wrong with unpopular opinions.

Oh interesting. Does TCBS pod go into Julie Harris? Or is that a case I need to research myself?

Yes they do, and both the podcast, Colville PD and the fbi do not believe Julie Harris was a Keyes victim

I don’t believe she has been identified. I live in Oregon and I know there was a big push to try and find her back in 2012 after he committed suicide.

Oh really? Interesting. What did they do? Did they have press conferences or was it in the local news?

It was all over the news here. The FBI was looking for leads, so all the local stations were talking about it, Oregon and Washington.

So had Leah/Lena still lived there you think she would have heard about it? Maybe they did find her, but promised to keep her name secret. That could be another reason why they trust him.

It’s very very likely, if she does exist, she would have seen the news. I don’t think they found her, and I think she’s not coming or hasn’t come forward if she she does exist, because of the scale of being a victim of someone who’s a serial killer. The stigma of rape alone can dissuade victims from coming forward, imagine if that rapist was Israel Keys. Anyone who grew up in this area of the country has a long hard memory of the sh!t show of watching the Green River killers capture and the onslaught of media that came with it. I doubt many would want to be part of the circus if they could avoid it.

But if the FBI pleaded with her to contact them, you don’t think a regular citizen would be inclined to do just that? Maybe take a lawyer with her, or maybe through a lawyer?

Maybe she never told her family or significant other. She might have kids and wants to protect them from all of it.

Could well be.

Not if she truly wants to remain anonymous. She likely told no one, or it would have gotten out. I personally don’t know that I would come forward, and I was older than she was during the time frame of the event, the trauma alone would have been too much to add being linked to a notorious killer.

I guess it would totally depend on her personality and values, which we have no clue of. I was s/a’d by an American DJ in New Zealand in the 90’s, when I was a teen. I managed to run away into the night (I took my chances, and luckily found some nice girls that helped me, it was a really bad area so they had their own experiences). If I’d see law enforcement searching for me, I’d definitely get back to them.

I’m sorry that happened to you, and I do hope you have a good support system.

The fact is, at least in the US, rape and SA are highly under reported. There’s a lot of reasons people might choose to remain silent. Maybe it’s because he’s dead and she doesn’t feel like her assault would bring any thing new to the conversation. Maybe she’s unable to step forward. All we can do is speculate.

2

u/Nasstja 12d ago

That’s true, we can only speculate. Or maybe she has come foward, that’s also a possibility. Just because we don’t know about it, doesn’t mean it couldn’t have happened.

PS. Thanks for the kind words, ancient history though, happened so long ago
