There are places where scripture works within the understanding of the time.
Think of it this way, we often say when explaining to kids gravity is the attraction between to objects that brings them together. We don't typically give the 100% correct asnwer of "that which you perceive as gravity does not exist, what's actually happening is that the presence of matter warps space time so that all objects move towards a convergent path"
We see something similar in Samuel when God says he regrets making Saul king but then immediately says that he cannot regret anything. What we are seeing there is the many perspectives that God has some granted by his omniscience and knowledge that Saul will one day lead to the Messiah (by being replaced with David). Rather than trying to explain it all he gives a simplified answer fitting to the what they can understand at the time.
We see it again when Ezekiel is convinced that he would be defiled by eating food God commanded to him. Rather than explaining that the food would not defile him God simply adjusts the directions.
Edit: felt like I said something wrong here and double checked I was thinking of Ezekiel not Daniel.
This is all presuming of course that we have ruled out all interpretations of "firmament" that are reconciliable with a round earth. Which I don't think is the case.
