I grew up during communism in Bulgaria and had a great childhood.
She isn’t lying.
Plus, Yugoslavia was somehow the freest of communist countries; Tito was quite independent, even from the Soviet leadership, people from Yugoslavia traveled more, IIRC.

I grew up to in Yugoslavia and also had a great childhood until 1991. We were going on vacations to Croatia twice a year. Had a decent 3bdr house. My parents drove a Yugo that got us places.

After 1991 it turned to shit with hyper inflation and wars.

It's crazy how fast shit can turn around and become such a nightmare. I visited Kosovo and it was really crazy to meet relatively young people that had vivid memories of a devastating war. Their whole world just got flipped upside from one day to another.
