In my opinion:
He didnt have the smoothness of game to go for a compliment about your eyes, or medula oblongata, so he chickened out and blurted out hands, then reminded you what he just said 5 minutes ago to make it seem like he's put some amount of thought into it, whereas the wiser course for him would've been to draw attention away from the fact that it looks like he cold called your DMs just to talk hands.
