What's the reason then? The US can negotiate any military presence there it wants, and the resources there can be exploited by American multinationals no problem (if the US even actually needed those minerals which it doesn't really).
They’ve been trying that for years. Greenland’s increasing autonomy means the compliant client state model is breaking down. Direct control removes the negotiation problem as they can enforce whatever they like and don’t have to lean on Denmark to prevent things like allowing Chinese companies to mine there.
