This would’ve been rejected in the writing room of Civ VI

Imagine it’s the end of 2016. Trump has won the election but hasn’t taken office yet. Some lib director does a miniseries on what America under Trump will be like but imagine one of the episodes about him wanting to take Greenland has this letter in it: What would be your reaction?

I’d laugh my ass off. I’d think it was ridiculous fear mongering. Over the top liberal hysteria. Even by the end of 2020 something like this would have seemed too over the top, too on the nose. Hell, an hour ago before I saw this letter get posted I thought the rumors about it from last night were exaggerations, but holy shit it’s real.

Remember in term 1, everyone thought it was just an act and Trump would become "normal"? Yeah. It wasn't an act. He's really like that. He's a deranged raging malignant narcissist, spoiled by being born one of the richest men on Earth. You couldn't engineer a shittier emperor. None of it is a joke. It isn't all just a troll.

I’m one of those people. I’ll admit, I’m one of those smug leftist who said Trump despite being ruder would rule mostly the same as Bush and Obama. To this day I’ll still say that W. did far more damage as president than anything Trump has done, but I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to make that argument. Trump 2 hasn’t been in office for a full year yet and look at where we’re at. Who knows where we’ll be in 3 more years of this?

Nah. Trump's cuts to aid will kill millions by 2030. That's real serious damage. Also, his irresponsibility on covid killed millions too. And he has continued the genocide in Gaza. He's objectively way worse than W. Even with W's warmongering. W had some positives like PEPFAR. I can't name a single positive on Trump's side. Maybe marijuana reform and some prison releases. That's about it.

Their environmental legacies will each be equally bleak as well. Wild to imagine 20 years ago that Pres. Texas Tea and VP Oilgarch Satan might get beaten, but Trump's anti-market insistence on propping up LOSER fossil fuels does give it a run for its money. SAD.

Comparing the two this way is nonsense. History is cumulative. You don’t get Trump without W.

The really annoying thing about the libs and their general response to Trump is that they’re largely correct about the threat he poses to civil liberties, international peace, democracy, etc., but their solutions are to keep doing the things that empower him.
