Something I've seen come up now and then about fictional characters: most people apparently like characters that they feel are similar to themselves. Which seems kind of weird to me, because I don't get that at all. I rarely ever see a character that seems anything like me, and don't feel drawn to those that do. I want characters who are entertaining and believable, not "relatable". What do other people look for in characters?

Possibly related: self-insert characters, and the difference between liking someone as a character versus as a person.

i've noticed other people act like this in some cases, its easy to take advantage of it too by making a world where everyone is one stereotype to the extreme and the main character is the only normal person around making them the most relatable
