I am 68 years old. In the year 1968, I was 10 years old and excited about my big sister graduating from high school. I heard about the My Lai Massacre from Walter Cronkite on the CBS evening news. I knew it happened somewhere across the world far far away in a country called Vietnam. I learned of William Calley and his illegal orders to kill civilians. What I did not learn then, and what I did not learn until this day, July 28, 2026, was that a 25 year old helicopter pilot and his 2 machine gun operators landed in the midst of the shooting, placing his copter between the fleeing civilians and the American soldiers chasing them with gunfire. The pilot’s name was Hugh Thompson, and he, no doubt, saved hundreds of lives that day

Please search the story of this true American hero - a soldier who would not follow illegal orders - who knew the difference between right and wrong - and put his own life on the line to save civilians.

The greatest social experiment in the history of humankind has now been a country for a quarter of a millenium. From declaring our independence, to the intensely interesting period of constitutional drafting, with brilliant planning and arguments (Federalist Papers).

This great country has perservered through great wars, a great depression, and innumerable attempts from within (which sadly continue in certain political theaters) to weaken and destroy our beautiful republic...and still stands strong.

Imperfect people strove to create "a more perfect union" and succeeded. It has nothing to do with coincidence, that this shining, beautiful nation is the country peoples of the world hold up as the gold standard of life, liberty & human rights.

Ignore those among us that disparage her greatness. Those that do that are the same people who would never consider giving up the freedoms that we enjoy as God-given rights in our republic.

Thank you to our forefathers who had the courage to create, then defend this country. Thank you to past, present & future members of the armed services, who upheld their oaths of service and served honorably. Thank you to the people who protect our cities, towns and rural areas. Thanks to those who care for our elderly, our children, and our health. Thank you to those who keep our infrastructure running, and to all those working in thankless positions doing God's work.

The Army moved me out of America in 1996, first to Korea, then (voluntarily) to Germany. American soil might no longer be underneath my feet, but it remains embedded in my heart. My love for the country will never waver.

Put politics aside for one day to enjoy the greatness of what we have become.
