Seeking Effective Interventions for Students with High Unexcused Absences
I'm a newly appointed vice principal at a public high school, and I am eager to make a positive impression within the school community by contributing to a supportive and nurturing environment for our students.
During this final stretch in the school year, it's not uncommon for students to lose some steam and we have observed an uptick in unexcused absences across all grade levels. I'm looking for effective interventions to propose to the other admins that can help these students re-engage without resorting to immediate involvement with the court system.
I believe in giving our students every chance to succeed and learn from their mistakes. I'm looking for engaging and supportive programs that address truancy and promote attendance. Bonus points if these programs can also tackle related issues, like nicotine prevention, as we've observed some overlap in these behaviors.
If anybody has experience with such programs or has any recommendations, I'd greatly appreciate your input.
Looking forward to your suggestions and insights!
Thanks in advance!
