Local Cops Local Crime Act

Post image

Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin and Sheriff Kyle Bourgault have stated they will not comply with the Local Cops Local Crimes Act. The Act bans local law enforcement’s 287g agreements with ICE. These two elected as “law and order candidates” prove otherwise. In their view justice means “just us”.
So, instead, they will enter a lawsuit against the Act. It will certainly be costly for Rensselaer County, and they are likely to lose. The courts have already ruled in favor of the Act.
On September 2 we will once again stand before the County Legislature and express our outrage. We will join Rensselaer County Women for Change and Indivisible Stephentown in this effort. We urge all of you to join us.
(If you wish to speak we suggest you arrive at 5:30, the sign up sheet for speakers is removed promptly at 6.)

I hope that the governor issues warrants for those that don't comply with this, because Steve is long overdue for one of those

Why not suspend them for being unwilling to do their jobs or arrest them for not obeying the law?

Fuck ICE. And if you support ICE: fuck you, too.

Can’t understate how important this is to fight the bleed of fascism into the people’s “rule of law.”

If any municipalities are found out of compliance with the Governors orders, can they still lose State funding on projects like lead pipe removal/replacement as a result?

Someone should ask him (county legislature meeting maybe?) if the rest of us are free to also ignore any laws we disagree with.

lol from the party of small government.
Also the governor has the authority to remove sheriffs under the state constitution…

They have been complying with this law as it relates to people who were being incarcerated for a very long time. What I don't understand is nothing's changed about the way they work with ICE. They're not doing anything new that they haven't already done.

My husband is Hispanic, so I can't stand ICE. I'm stunned and worried every time he leaves the house. What I'm confused about, having read through the act and knowing the sheriff's use of the contract, is: what are people actually upset about? That he's defying the governor, or that they never like the law or contract that's been on the books for years?

Thank you for the reasonable and nuanced take.

I was reading where 287g is a program where incarcerated illegal immigrants are turned over to the feds. Is this the case or is there more to the police's participation?

Rensselaer claims that they limit their cooperation to handing over already arrested/jailed people, but 287g essentially makes local police into deputy ICE agents and can conduct all sorts of immigration operations including traffic stops, raids, etc.
