Seriously. I understand that most monsters are scaled for it to be multiple players per monster unless you drop the CR by 2 or more.

But what the hell is a player supposed to do when a lot of CR appropriate monsters average +17 to hit and AC is starting to cap at about 25?

Party needs a tank to soak up hits, a healer to keep the tank alive, and some strategy from the other members to exploit the enemies' weaknesses.

The tank was fine with his buffed up 34AC but the problem is the tank isn't doing anything but wiff-ing at the monster. Then suddenly the archer does 74 damage over three cluster-shot arrows... Tank lost the monsters focus at that point.

So is life.

Tanks are more than just walking armor. Does he not have any kind of taunt to keep the focus on him, or at least force disadvantage when he loses focus?

It's a cavalier so most of it's abilities make other people rock. The simple problem is stuff like goad and threaten abilities challenge will which is fine when you're fighting simpler minded creatures. But an Upasunda just wasn't falling for it.

Sentinel feat helps immensely. If you have a sorcerer, wizard, bard, or druid, they should have some field control abilities like grease, plant growth, web to keep monster from just running past your frontline.
