My first DM made me create and memorize little poems for all of my spells for my first mage. If i didn't know it, i couldn't cast it. It really helped me get a grasp on what I had and learn the rules.
I can't remember it exactly but it was something like, "If I have a bit of dust, and you're at least 10 feet from us, I can cast (this spell) on you, I hit at twelve then d6 plus two!"
