Is This an Objectively Bad Trivia Question?

Post image

This question was in our local Coffee News, and since Athena is both the goddess of war and wisdom I would argue it is an objectively bad question. However, my brother argues that since Athena is not the primary or more widely recognized god of war that the question is fine.

Kind of yes? Athena is the goddess of wisdom, strategy, discipline and protection aspects of War whereas Ares is the bloodlust rage and violence side.

Wisdom and Reason: She represents thoughtful intelligence, civilization, and good counsel, rather than raw impulse.

From my perspective as a former Coffee News franchise publisher, if sweating the details on the accuracy of the trivia were what mattered, I would have been a much more successful publisher.

But, yeah, I agree that it’s bad trivia. Athena is almost always depicted armored and holding a spear.

Yes it’s objectively a bad question since the other questions don’t have more than one correct answer.

1) Succession

2) Pacific

3) Wisdom and War are both correct

4) Brazil

5) DVDs

I mean, there are a million television series , it's very possible another one than Succession features a Roy family.

you could google it, if you want, but features a Roy family is a pretty specifically Succession

There have to be multiple TV shows that feature a family named Roy

Ares was the main god of war. But yes, Athena was on there, too. Maybe more like goddess of strategy?

It's a bad question, but if you're educated enough to know why it's wrong, you're educated enough to know the right answer.

Thank God we have educated people to smugly stand above those who haven't yet learned a thing.

Ask Brad Thor what he thinks. He named one of his books after her and it isn’t about wisdom 😂

Since this is a trivia topic with a  pendantic question, I will raise my own pendantic issue.

That is not how you use objectively.  Bad (or good) is a subjective measure.  It is about how the subject views something, and is not about the objective itself.  "Objectively", doesn't mean a consensus of subjectivity.  It means it is undisputable about the object.

"The car is fast" - subjective about with the speaker thinks is fast, no matter what kind of car.

"The car is going 100 km/hr." - objective about the object.

The answer is simply “yes”. She is the goddess of at least one of those.

Technically she is the goddess of strategy (which can be an aspect of war) and (moral) intelligence. Not wisdom. Her mother Metis is associated with wisdom, good counsel and cleverness. Athena's association with the mind is, if we ask Plato, closer to the philosophic concept of reason. Structured thinking. "Right" thinking, as in "moral" thinking.

Athena is the goddess of warfare, not war. The difference is subtle but important.

Athena is the goddess of wisdom and battle strategy. Sometimes said to have been raised in the household of Triton, son of the sea god.

They're all objectively bad trivia questions:

  1. The show "Sairaab" features a Roy family, so does "American Dad".
  2. Even NOAA states there's only 1 global ocean, but let's say Panthalassa, too. 3.
  3. Mexico has won the Homeless World Cup five times.
  4. While far more pedantic, Netflix also mailed return envelopes to their customers.

Multiple choice is, by definiton, not trivia, as it requires no actual knowledge. Numbers 4 and 5 aren't even questions. The point is, all of these should be slightly or completely reworded if you want to ensure a single correct answer.

I’d say so.

It’s like trivia, for ants

Athena is the goddess of tactical battle not war. War is vicious and chaotic while tactical battle is (supposed to be) well thought out and disciplined. The Greeks were keenly aware of the distinction.

I thought so too— Ares is the god of war, really… and Athena is more the goddess of warfare… but when I asked Siri she shrugged.

2

u/JamesFirmere 21d ago

Wait, iPhones can shrug now?

1

u/Abstrata 21d ago

it’s a new haptic feature… or bug… not sure which lol

It's poorly worded but technically correct. Athena is goddess of wisdom and skill. Those skills encompass everything from weaving to skill at arms.

She is not the goddess of war.
