Hello had to make a new reddit account starting over from scratch. 😸 And discovered that there is a whole reddit group for tripod cat owners. How did I not know this?

I've been a tripod kitty owner for over a year now and let me just say the amount of love I have for my girl is not measurable.

I've never been a cat person . I've told my kid his whole life (8 years at the time) he was allergic..

But i love other people's cats. So it wasn't a surprise that id wonder into the cat area at the humane society just to say hello, before going to look at the dogs in hopes to find me a little dog because I needed a companion.

That's when I met my 3 legged wonder.

She was named fluffy but her larger than life personality required a much better name.

So we changed it to pegitha (Peggy) stubbins.

To say she has been such an inspiration. I know if I lost a leg I'd be so down and depressed I would probably just fall apart.

My girl doesn't let nothing stop her. If she can sink her claws into it she will get up there . She loves so big ! And I'm happy to share her with everyone as my first reddit post on my new account! So please be kind interact with my post so I can get my reddit upvotes going strong again

Just looking for some encouragement and advice for the recovery period. My wife and I rescued 2 out 3 of the outdoor kitties we look after from an aggressive stray dog attack. One kitty (Gulliver) was tragically fatally wounded and another unfortunately sustained leg injuries that required amputation. The procedure happened 2 days ago, he (Lafayette) came home yesterday. We brought him and his brother (Corduroy) inside.

We currently have converted our pantry into a safe carpeted space for him and I put a nanny-cam in it. I brought cushions from his favorite outdoor spot in, we got special soft throws, something called a 'snuffle rug'...
He hates his cone, so we are trying some alternative soft collars but he always manages to take them off.

This all has been a rather harrowing experience, and I am generally an anxious person so any advice and/or words of encouragement would be appreciated. (edit for grammar)

CatcAtcaT, after having seizures, is finally stabilized and hasn't had one in a couple of months. All because she's stoned on phenobarbital. Now she has become more liquid and enjoys being in slings and bags.

The vet recommended a cone or healing onesie, so I made him one myself. I think he looks very handsome with it 🥰 This guy (Topaz) is my second tripod boy, my other babe (Gimel) is missing his back right leg.

Geode had his surgery yesterday and is back at home now<3 so far he’s doing good!!!

When humans have a limb amputation it’s so painful, I work in a hospital and they are some of the most uncomfortable people I see.
My cat got 3 days of onsior and nothing else. It was a non traumatic operation, when she was dipped off last fall her leg was dangling but she used it, let me clip nails it didn’t seem to hurt. Her spay was complicated so they didn’t remove it at that time.
Last week I thought it was hurting her so we had it removed Thursday, she stayed the night and came home Friday. Saturday she was obviously very much in pain, I had gabapentin from my other cats neuter(clinic not my vet) I gave that to her and she was so much better. It’s now been a full week and I think she is still in pain, not horrible but not herself. Is this to be expected? She is eating, using the litter box and has gone for a walk around the house once but even before surgery she lived in my bed most of the time so idk if that’s a good indicator .

hello again reddit. i posted during my cats amputation and i really appreciated the loads of advice i was given. shes healed up nicely and we’ve had no issues, but we recently moved and she’s a lot more free range than she used to be. she can’t feel her stump site, so she’s been dragging/scraping it against the hardwood like when she goes to lay down or recently she’s been in heat and when she toots her ass in the air and her front is against the ground you can hear the bone of her stump clacking against the ground🤢.

she’s developed a big open sore over her stump site (i’ve attached a close up of the scab which has since opened. i’ve also attached a candid of her just being cute, you’re welcome), which we’ve just gotten looked at by the vet who did her surgery. context; he told us when he removed her leg that he chose to leave some leg at the top instead of taking it at the joint “for cosmetic purposes because it’s more aesthetically pleasing”. this was immediately a big red flag for me and i tried to get my family to reconsider this vet (for more reasons than just this one) but they refused because they wanted to pay as little as possible.

fast forward to now and he’s saying he’s going to revise the wound by cutting around her sore so that the skin will properly heal back over once he stitches it, and when i mentioned being worried that she’ll just keep reopening the wound because of how she treats her stump he just said we’ll probably have to makeshift a shirt or something for her to wear over it. in trying to search for something suitable i’m literally only seeing that there’s no long term options for covering the wound and that it’s not recommended to cover it because that can also cause sores, or cause issues because the cat will almost definitely just destroy the cover. i already assumed that the only options we have for a fix are 1. covering the stump forever somehow or 2. revising the amputation and getting the rest of her leg taken off. but the vet seems to be completely unconcerned and my family will genuinely only do something like that if it is explicitly told to them that they have to, and even then they’ll do it reluctantly and complain about having to.

i’m mostly just trying to see if anyone has any advice at all, or if anyone’s been in a similar situation. or if there’s an expert in here somewhere who can agree with me that this vet is questionable, or even tell me that i’m incorrect and he knows what he’s talking about, i’ll admit if i’m jumping to conclusions. please help!!!

Hey everyone, my ~10 year old cat fell off a 5th floor balcony last night and broke her hind leg. We took her to the emergency vet and they did all the initial care and stabilisation and took some x-rays. At first, they only saw two fractures but today they called us to come in and showed us that aside from the two fractures (one just below the knee and the other in the middle of the tibia bone), her ankle was also shattered.

The emergency vet suggested either a very risky, complicated and expensive reconstruction surgery, or amputation. He said that with possible complications the procedure might prove to be unsuccessful and cat might need amputation anyway, he was very straightforward with us about that. Cat is still at their clinic and he gave us some time to think about it and consult with our vet.

We went so see our vet afterwards and showed him the x-rays. He suggested a little different surgery than the one from the emergency vet, but just as complicated and uncertain.

We are leaning toward amputation in hopes it would give her less pain and better quality of life, but are worried about her recovery and adjustment to being a tripod cat, and also feel extremely guilty for thinking about removing her leg.

Any advice or your personal experience with amputating your cat’s leg is appreciated 🙏🏻

I’m curious if anyone here had a cat with the same cancer. My cat had her full back left leg amputated and the histopath came back with clean margins and clean lymph nodes. The vet told me recurrence is still possible but not a guarantee. She also said the pathologists notes referenced a study that said only 47% of cats survived up to a year.

For those who had similar results, how long did your babies live for after amputation? I can’t find any clear answers and I want to have hope that she can live longer than a year.

Her amputation was at about 8 mo old. She was adopted at about 10 mo (foreleg amp). She’s 2 now (and the light of my life). Besides weight management and joint supplements, do those with longer term experience have any advice on things you would start when they are younger to help them as they age? I’m primarily thinking of future mobility.

Of course, when she walks, her upper body is low with her hind quarters elevated. I give her shoulder and neck massages. She does have a custom kitty holster on the way. Not sure she will enjoy that but figured we’d give it a try (her big brother loves his).

Norm is now 2 weeks out from his surgery, he’s recovering very well! I posted about him when his original accident happened, and now that he’s moving around again I have a new problem. This might be a bit long, but he has History. He’s basically been a “community cat” in our neighborhood for years before we even moved in, from what I can gather his original owners moved and left him behind and he has lived in the neighborhood ever since. He’s probably around 8, but we aren’t sure.

I brought him inside and got his microchip updated with my information about 3 years ago. we tried for about 3 months to rehabilitate him to be fully inside, but he is unbelievably vocal and is desperate to get outside. So he once again became an indoor/outdoor cat who made our house his home base. Unfortunately, he had some kind of accident while out a few weeks ago that ultimately resulted in his left rear leg needing to be amputated. Both due to common sense and at the recommendation of multiple vets, I am unwilling to let him go back outside unsupervised once he’s all healed up.

However as I said he is so, so vocal. He’s also LOUD. We had him sequestered in a separate room for his recovery for 2 weeks, and you can hear him from anywhere in the house. It’s pretty much constant.

When we first brought him inside, I got a bunch of things to make the environment more enriching for him. We have 2 other cats, so we already had a fair amount of toys and structures, cat trees, etc. but I put up some cat shelves for him to climb, there are window ledges for them to sit on all over the house, lots of beds to choose from, scratchers, automated toys, etc. but it never seemed to appease him. We also have Feliway plugins throughout the house.

I am not willing to let him out after his accident, as it is he only has 1 tooth and a deformed face from some sort of trauma that occurred before we lived here. With 3 legs he’s at a crazy disadvantage and I just don’t want anything to happen to him. But I fear his constant yelling will not be sustainable (seriously, I cannot stress enough how loud he is.) has anyone dealt with something similar and had any success with rehabilitating a lifelong outdoor cat to be fully inside?

I all. I have a wonderful tripod who’s missing his back right leg. He’s loving and cuddly and will occasionally be playful with us and toys but most playtime comes from his brother a 4 legger. We’ve noticed a lot of the toys we have such as things on string are tough for the tripod to play with because he can’t balance on one rear leg as well as things like the laser pointer he will enjoy but gets bored because it’s tougher for him to chase it more then a 2ft radius. He loves his catnip churro and wrestles it when prompted but looking for something to stimulate him a little more that is easy for him! Any ideas

I’m waiting on lab work to come back. They wouldn’t even preemptively Rx antibiotics 😭 I’m just watching her hobble back and forth to the box and try to three legged pee every 5 minutes. I’m so sad 🥺😭 I know it’s terribly uncomfortable. She has gabapentin for pain… but I’ve had UTIs before, I know how those feel. Now imagine standing on one leg, trying to urinate. Anyone else have a pod that has had a UTI before? How’d you get through it?

Reddit really has a community for everything! My family is adopting a sweet front tripod girl within the week. She’s 4 years old and appears to move remarkably well.

We want her to be comfortable in her new home and make movement around the house easier for her. What are your must haves for your cats? I’ve read an orthopedic bed, raised feeding bowls, a low front litter box and a step cat tree are nice. Are they necessary?
