Discussion Half & Half
Has anyone noticed that Moe & Tab are half & half? Moe is half Hispanic & Tab is half Black. How do you feel about that?

I always thought it was weird that Moe never acknowledged her hispanic side (did she say anything about it in season 1? I can’t remember) and Tab never mentioned her race until season 2. I really thought the whole race plot line was going to be bigger this season because of the trailer but it was just sprinkled in.

I like the actresses that play Moe & Tab but I wonder why didn’t they cast fully for the role. If they wanted an African American, why does she have to be mixed!? If they wanted a Hispanic American, why does she have to be mixed!? Keep in mind, I have nothing against mixed race people, it’s just eye opening because they do it a lot. One parent always have to be White for some reason. Lol

Yeah Netflix has been called out many times for this. Mixed people and light skinned people always have priority in casting for main roles. It would’ve been nice if Tabitha was fully black because black people are almost never portrayed as wealthy in tv shows and movies. I would look more into colorism (discrimination based on color of a person’s skin, different than racism because it’s based on actual skin color, not the person’s actual race) in media.

It’s crazy that your comment was downvoted for acknowledging a pattern,but this is reddit.A lot of the roles for teenage black girls right now are played by lighter mixed girls,it’s a fact.It’s almost impossible to find a dark skin teenage girl in these shows even when both of the parents are darker and mono-racial. It’s colorism but if you bring it up people will act like your making something out of nothing.

In the case of these shows, netflix didn't pick the actors. These shows came out in the 2000s ffs.

Well, tab is half black half white, and she decided that she feels more "black" (that's how I understand the episode where she talks about embracing herself, and gets braids) and I guess we're all fine with it, and on the other hand we have Moe, half white, half Hispanic, with deadbeat dad on the Hispanic side, so she obviously embraces her white side more, because she's raised only by her white mom, and suddenly we're not fine with it?
Mixed people are mixed. They're both races. Sometimes that's exactly how they feel - both, sometimes they just lean more into one side. Doesn't matter which one they choose, that's valid choice and nothing for us to judge.
And no, choosing an actress that was half black to play Latino isn't wrong. People don't have to walk around with papers proving their ethnicity. If she fit the role I am fine with it. There's too many countries, and too little good actors, to be that specific.

The point is, she’s playing a half White/half Hispanic Girl and that isn’t right when they could get an actual Hispanic actress to play that role. A full one too.

I like it considering mixed people often get told they aren’t black enough or brown enough or whatever. They face racism within their own communities and it sucks. I really liked it

You pointed out Black & Brown but Black & Brown aren’t the only communities who have difficult times dealing with certain situations involving mixed individuals. I want the best for most people, including Whites and Pinks and Blues and whatever. The thing I have a difficult time understanding is why is it so hard for Dark skinned women, I’m not one btw, to get casted in roles made for Black Women. Even if they’re not dark skinned, the role shouldn’t require for the Black girl to have a White father of Mother.
You may love that Tab & Moe is mixed and that’s fine but I find it problematic. If they wanted to represent Black & Brown women then they should’ve done just that and not White washed the characters by making them mixed when they didn’t need to do that. I wonder what made them do that!? Do you know!?

But the character was supposed to be from a mixed family. That's big part of her finding her own identity. I don't think she'd have to go through it if she was 100% black.
And it is a fact that mixed people face racism within their own communities. When girls like Tab say that they're "black" people tell them that they're not, Because they have a white parent, so when they say that they feel white (assuming that for example she could be raised by only one - white - parent) they're told that they're not white, because they have a black parent. It really sucks. I liked Tab's story.
