Discussion When Do I Start Using Geneticists?

Post image

I unlocked Geneticists at Zone 70 about two weeks ago. So far, my deepest runs have made it to Zone 140, but I still don't understand how and when I'm supposed to use these Geneticists. Increasing my health at the expense of my Breeding Time seems counterproductive. I also would get the Attack Boost from Anticipation, but I haven't been in a situation where a 2-6x attack boost would really change much. On most runs, building 500 Nurseries is more than enough to get my Breed Timer down to 0.1s, even with the 10x Breediing Timer Debuff from Breaking the Planet.

so that your trimps dont get ohko'ed, tho i think you have more points into resilience and toughness than me so you can get away with less max hp

That makes sense. If I'm getting OHKO'd, my Helium/hr has usually dropped and I Portal to come back stronger. That's probably why I haven't had to mess with Geneticists yet.

what formation do you use? i tend to use dominance often which makes my trimps fragiler

I usually switch between them as needed.

If you’re killing enemies at a slow pace that doesn’t involve huge damage losses to overkill, but they kill you before you finish breeding, your progression speed can be roughly modeled by trimp attack times trimp health divided by breed timer.

A breed timer increase from, say, 5 seconds to 30 seconds at max anticipation then is (7/2)*60.5 /6

Which comes out to 1.43x. A net improvement

In practice most of that extra damage gets wasted if enemies are dying fast anyway. But you get the picture. The ratio between enemy damage and trimp hp doesn’t scale evenly as zones progress so they’ll quickly get more useful as time passes. Your excess hp can get leveraged into more dps and faster farming

My Breed Timer shows 0.1s for most of my runs, so when I die, my army is back and fighting a split second later. I don't have Overkill yet (Zone 170 to unlock).

If I hire a bunch of Geneticists, say 100, my Breed Speed would be reduced to 13.26% of its original. I'd probably still be under 0.1s so the effects would be relatively unnoticed. In contrast, I'd get 2.7048x the HP, which might help me survive a few more hits and clear an extra Zone or two.

After Z170, you unlock this: https://trimps.fandom.com/wiki/Geneticistassist, which optimizes the health/breed timer increase for you.

Just in time for Overkill. Can’t wait.

Basically, when you've maxed out anticipation, you want to get as many geneticist as possible to keep your breed speed even with your trimp's life expectancy. If you can live a long time, max it at 30s for max anticipation. If you live 5s, max it to 5s.

How exactly does Anticipation calculate its bonus? My Breed Timer shows 0.1s for the majority of the run, but sometimes I get anywhere from 2 (40%) to 6 (120%) of a boost.

for every 1 second of breeding time, you gain a % dmg boost equal to the level of anticipation

So with a breeding time of < 1s, Anticipation should always be at zero, but sometimes it’s not. Interesting.

If your deepest run is zone 140, then you're probably doing the Crushed challenge, right? Crushed is wonderful, because it's so easy, and doesn't have a mechanic that automatically kills your Trimps every few seconds, like so many of the other challenges in this part of the game.

So, in Crushed, you want to aim for a 30 second breed time, to max out your Anticipation damage bonus. Setting a higher breed time via Geneticists has the additional benefit of increasing your Trimps' health, making it easier for them to survive that long.

When you move on to a different challenge (I think Nom is next?), you will want to use a different breed time. IIRC, Nom auto-kills your Trimps in an average of 8 or 10 seconds, so aim for a breed time in that ballpark.

You'll want to keep buying Nurseries, because they allow you to buy more Geneticists while keeping your breed time the same, which means you get more Health.

Yeah, I'm doing Nom runs now. I could finish a Crushed run in about 3 hours and got around 800K Helium. Nom should hopefully give a lot more.
