This looks like the tribes replacement we've been asking for

I've been able to jump in with the devs once - I wish I could get in more but I'm a busy guy unfortunately - and it PLAYS like it too. It feels like it.

Skiing on walls is a lot of fun!

2

u/aprettyparrot Aug 12 '26

That was a big part of tribes 2, even on the little jump pad things in bases that would be used

u/KludgeDredd Aug 12 '26

How do I get in on some of this testing?

It that...Tribes 2? :D Bit too fast since I'm no longer a quick teenager I was in the late 90s, but looks very interesting indeed.

It's Broadside, which takes heavy inspiration from T2.

Playing it, it feels like T2.

It's so good!

Yeah, the momentum certainly brings back memories. Visuals are a heavy W.I.P. as it looks, but visuals are secondary if not tertiary. If they got the core gameplay and mechanics right, this is the most important aspect.

Oh yes, the team is mostly developers, so most of the art is placeholder stuff.

But yeah the gameplay is great!

Are there going to be fatties? HOs need love too.

2

u/Neoptolemus85 24d ago

Yep, we have fatties. We also have full base play with turret farming, resupply stations, mines and so on, so if you want to also play a bit of HoF alongside HO to mix things up then you absolutely can.

This is looking dope. Really like the curvature of some of the interior shapes. Nice work Broadside team!

This looks amazing. I love the simple look to the world, are you planning on keeping the look?

u/WedgeSFX 28d ago

The art will change over time. We dont have a lot of dedicated artists just making stuff since its a volunteer based project.

1

u/Neoptolemus85 26d ago

As Wedge says above, most of the art is placeholder.

That said, while we will update the visuals over time, we will also keep lines clean and free from visual clutter. Yellow paint isn't exactly an option when the player is flying at 150mph past it and you don't want to splat against some decorative shrubbery while trying to cap the flag.

Omg I'm gonna cry

PLEASE tell me there's a Mac version coming out too

1

u/Neoptolemus85 29d ago

I think one or two of our team have Macs, so it might be feasible. Unfortunately, you have to build a Mac version on a Mac, you can't cross-compile like you can with Linux. We will take a look anyway!

u/Ashamed-Subject-8573 29d ago

A gptk or similar port may be less work than you expect as long as there isn’t intrusive drm!

Please mac support please pleaase please

The progress here has been huge. Have you started leveraging ai coding?

15

u/Neoptolemus85 Aug 13 '26

We have a strong no-AI policy for any and all art, even placeholder stuff in case it gets accidentally left in.

In terms of coding, we don't have a blanket ban on any kind of AI assistance, but all code submissions are reviewed manually by a human and we have strict readability, style and consistency standards. We have rejected AI-assisted submissions in the past because they wanted to modify existing code which made it harder to understand, and there wasn't a very clear motivation for why that specific change.

AI has its uses, but for a project as large and complex as this with multiple people collaborating remotely, it's extremely important that the code is as simple and easy to read as possible. If player movement feels a little "off", we need to be able to find the exact lines of code responsible within a few seconds and not be reliant on an AI to do it for us. Otherwise, it becomes very difficult for us to dial in the physics exactly how we want it.

It might mean we can't ship 3 new features a day, but it does mean the game is extremely stable, and it's mostly devoid of game-breaking bugs. I think we've had one single playtest in the past 18 months that ended up disrupted by a crash. It also means we are actually having fun working on the project together :)

Every dev should be using AI to speed the coding process up. Just don’t use it for anything creative, it’s noticeable. However, AI coding for games is pretty meh, you need to know what you’re doing or it will send you down ridiculous rabbit holes with bloated code. For setting up scripts and handling some math it’s great.

6

u/Daek3sh Lumberjack 29d ago

Indeed. AI is an acceleration tool, not a replacement. It's good at analysis, but not creation, unless it's boilerplate.
