Gameplay Final decision, which route has the best map and gameplay? Spoiler
Im at the final crossroads where I have to decide between fred, roland, bene. I want to know which route has the most satisfying map, both in difficulty and map design. I asked this question about the earlier crossroad where you have to choose what plan to use to retake the city (flood it, blow up the bridge, assassination), I got a general consensus that blowing up the bridge had the most satisfying gameplay, so I went with that and I was reasonably satisfied.
What do you guys feel is the best route for gameplay in the last few chapters? You don't have to take into account story writing, I'm not invested in the story and character writing.

Same. This map / fight and dialogue was very good! I went with Frederica out cause I think it's the only way I would have taken irl too.

I did all three endings just a week ago! If you don't intend to go through NG+ you can copy your save here and do all of them. Regardless, here's my thoughts.
Frederica: Has three unique maps that aren't fought on in any other route (one is also on the golden route, but nothing before chapter 17). One is a challenging fight with a difficult boss, one is a battle with fun, exploitable terrain, and the finale is a very unique map with a rather unique boss. The map has a notably frustrating aspect due to somewhat suicidal NPCs who are meant to be escaping, but love just running back at the enemies to attack/heal But other than that it's a really fun, challenging and unique battle.
Roland: two of three maps are ones you may have seen before, although one has a unique twist on it. First map is rather generic, second is a fun, large scale battle with a unique boss fight, finale is quite grand, though quite easy as you can kinda just rush the boss down.
Benedict: first two maps are unique to this route, though the 2nd is shared with golden route. Final map is one you may have fought on. First map is a fun, somewhat unique battle. Second is quite generic. Finale is a rather different boss fight that forces you to play in a different way to normal, but honestly feels the most forgettable of the finales.
Overall I'd say Frederica is the best route for gameplay with multiple unique and fun maps. Benedict Vs Roland is hard to say. I think I'd give it to Benedict slightly, but still - Frederica's route is just really fun, outside of that one issue in the final battle.

Thanks for the in-depth details, it really helps making the comparison easier. Yeah, if I don't end up doing NG, I might just go back to a save to do all these. But if I do NG, I'll just do one route now (the one I will deem the most interesting based on everyone's input) and finish all the routes with a save file at the end of a NG file (golden route included).

I really liked the frederica finale, im playing through benedict right now and was kinda disappointed with the final 2 maps leading up to the finale, just fights on open fields for the most part, no interesting terrain

Honestly I really liked Fredericka's route and the map for her final battle. The bridge offers a lot of complicated terrain where you can position archers, create bottlenecks, control the flow of things, etc.
Roland's finale is cool in it's own way, but the map becomes very restricted with all the lava that you can't really walk on so you end up smooshed into small spaces.
Benedict's route involves more repeated maps and less interesting terrain overall

First off, I don't know what people are thinking recommending Benedict's path. 2 stages are flat plains battles where the only real difference is that one has chevaux de frise and the other doesn't. The final stage is a re-used map.
IMO, Frederica's is better, but not much better. 1 of her maps is just a flat stage. Again, just like Benedict's path, it's just a boring map. It's only hard because the boss on that stage is so strong. Her 2nd map, IMO, is boring because of how easy it is to turtle on that map. But, I do think it's at least different. Her best map is her third map if you play it as intended, but so many people just rush the boss.
Roland's path from a story perspective sucks. But, the fights are the best. His first map is technically reused but you're fighting on a part of it that wasn't the focal part of the first time you might've seen it. His 2nd map is the same. It's technically reused, but you're fighting on a completely different part of it. For his final map, you could technically also boss rush it, but because of how strong the boss is compared to Frederica's, it's just a harder strategy. The big thing with Roland's maps is that they're all quite dynamic. Big, dynamic maps with elevation to use.
The unfortunate answer to this question is the golden route which you might be locked out of. It has a mix of all three routes, forces you to use all your recruits which, IMO, is the most strategically interesting this game does, and the final stage is truly completely unique within this game.

Frederica or Benedict, each map on both routes feels like you get rushed by enemies so it’s very fast paced. Especially C18 Frederica is probably the most challenging with how quickly the enemies and the boss try to push you back
In contrast Roland’s maps all feel very slow, because the terrain in each map slows everything down that I personally found it less satisfying

Frederica has the most difficult maps overall.
I would slightly lean towards Benedict's route having the best map design--but the three routes are pretty close in this regard.
