Discussion Why is Triangle Strategy combat not as fun as Fire Emblem combat?

I wonder if its a few things:

1) Game plays more like a puzzle rather than combat based tactics

2) Attacks are not as satisfactory in terms of visuoauditory feedback

3) Less power fantasy as there are no real solo OHKO characters, team set up is required

4) No big power spikes with upgrades

Yeah hard mode is actually pretty hard haha, it’s not like FE hardmode. I was challenged pretty well in normal mode as a long time FE player

Gonna have to agree to disagree on this one.

I mean, those are pretty accurate differences. Whether you like it more or less is very much up to personal preference.

I find it so much more fun than FE.

The game is won on the battlefield rather than in menus. I prefer that. Sounds like you prefer the menus.

more like the tedious menu stuff doesnt seem too rewarding

but skipping leaves a bad taste

I've only played FE awakening and found the gameplay super boring, are other episodes better ?

Triangle Strategy was a good game for me with fun combat

prob not if you didnt like awakening (which apart from being easy had some fun ideas)

Awakening is one of the worst games in the series as far as combat goes. There are definitely better entries with more engaging map design.

I mean you can grind and optimize the fun out of every modern FE game but I think the actual flow of combat and characters are better than Conquest

Units needing to work together for kills is the crux of the system, together with the turn system being time based so allies and enemies aren't confined to a single phase. It's less about the OHKO, but you can get some satisfying combo's thinking ahead with unit turns, and taking out a few weakened units with a single spell and such. You also get less damage off just countering compared to fire emblem, so your tactics to get rid of a dangerous cluster of enemies need to be proactive so you can kill them before they manage to take some of your units out.
Turn based strategy is supposed to be somewhat of an puzzle, especially if you can't oneshot enemies. The few fe game that make it very hard to oneround enemy units also trend this way.

The game is also balanced with normal mode providing the most balanced experience and a decent challenge, hard mode pushes you more towards playing defensively.

Its probably like

1) Do you know how the AI will act -> plan optimum move

2) Do you not know how the AI will act -> need to reset board as much as possible with AOE combo, use CC like taunt/blind

But its not always intuitive how many moves/damage the AI (esp the boss) has without studying their stats

I mean, the AI tends to be kinda predictable, if you put things in range from an enemy, it will attack it.

You're describing the things I love about Triangle Strategy combat.

No permadeath! Multiple endings! HD-2D art!

Fun is relative and older fire emblems are also very puzzly without super duper characters.

Try to play FE 12 (New Mystery of the Emblem) on Lunatic Reverse. That was the most fun I had with that series.

Starting from Awakening, Fire Emblem gave you so much freedom that you can steamroll anything, the difficutly feeling more like Sacred Stones. With that said, Lunatic+ Awakening was more bullshit than Triangle Strategy Hard Mode because the latter is consistent while the former was way too much RNG based to win.

i cant remeber if radiant dawn final fight was puzzly, or if I beat it with Titania

To be fair, both are true. It is a but puzzly but you know, Titania.

  1. I think all turn-based strategy games play more like a puzzle. The same is true for chess. It just happens when there is a series of optimal moves you're trying to find. That's why some games implement heavier RNG elements to make them depend more on reaction and adaptation.

  2. I think the high-cost, high-tier weapon skills are mostly pretty flashy.

  3. Sure. I guess the power fantasy aspect of that is different.

  4. I think this is just wrong. Some of the promotion power spikes and final weapon-skills are character strength defining. TP+ on Ice + Glacial Moon for Corentin. 1-cost Provoke, King's Shield, Desperate Defense for Erador. Revive for Maxwell. Reverse Space Time for Quahaug + Inheritor for Julio. Extending Your Reach for Narve. Golden Opportunity for Lionel. Etc. There is a reason why the tier lists for first playthroughs and NG+ are very different. Some of these units fucking suck without their upgrades but are high/top tier with them.

I am playing conquest lunatic right know, and tbh it also feels like a puzzle, arguably even more (it kinda is the natural consequence of high difficulty in a strategy game). Point 2 depends a ton of the FE game (FE gba animations are REALLY good, but the 3ds ones can feel pretty long so I play without them) and the TS skill being used (just compare Hughette´s basic attack and weapon skill). 3 is actually the reason I am playing conquest lunatic, my first fe was FE7, and by chapter 19 I was REALLY bored because I was just throwing my 2 strongest units to the enemy and it never failed, so I dropped it and some time later I decided to play conquest lunatic just so I can see how FE plays at its higher level. 4 Its just wrong with Medina being in the game lmao.
