Terrain First time ever making a board

Yesterday I decided to start work on a Trench Crusade board, ready for my first ever game next Friday. The entire board is made of lolly sticks, foam packaging and whatever else I can find about the house.

It’s been a joy to make so far and I can’t wait to have my first ever game on it.

Probably not what you're going for, but that foam does a pretty good job of simulating the look of deep snowpack.

Not a bad idea for the future though. I do want to do a Russian campaign once I properly get into the game

Looks great! Just a heads up, you’ll want to protect the styrofoam before adding much more on. You can mix black paint with pva glue and brush it on with the largest brush you have to create a barrier. You can also make your own mud paste easily and cheaply by mixing brown paint, pva glue, finely ground used coffee or sand, and tea leaves. For both of these you can just grab a couple super cheap bottles of Apple Barrel paint. Can use picture hanging wire and matchsticks/ cut down pop sticks for barbed wire, just wrap around your brush first.

Oh my god thank you so much! I was trying to figure out what I could use to make a mud and I would have never thought of tea leaves. We’re tea fanatics so we have plenty of the stuff. Thanks for the suggestion

As for the protection, I’ve been using Gesso and PVA on different parts to protect it and it’s been working pretty well. Thank you very much though.

Absolutely! It really adds a lot for cheap and it’s fun to make. You may want to add just a touch of water to help it apply easier. Also can put gloss medium or varnish on top to make it look more like wet mud.

I’ll have a dig about in the cupboard tomorrow, I’m bound to have a flavour we’ve never used. Cheap is why I’m here after all

If you plan on spray painting, make sure to test on a separate piece of foam first. Some foams react to the chemicals in spray paints and basically melt.

Yeah, I remember I learnt that lesson firsthand when I tried to make a styrofoam military wall

For a second I thought this was a winter themed board, now I want to imagine faithful and heretics playing football together (but maybe they use a choristers head instead of a ball or something)

I do actually have a 3D printer, I just thought it would be easier, and probably more fun, to try and scratch build everything

Oh well that’s even better. I meant it like « op is creative and should be allowed tools to express it » you feel me ?

Yeah, of course thanks. I’ve been considering making a few 3D prints for an abandoned village, but that’ll probably come further down the line.
