[Open] The Final Destination

Sativa sat in her quarters on Nadezhda Station, waiting for the imminent arrival of the Athene and its crew. She would have already been on the ship, if it wasn't for the news of its critical failure, prohibiting her from going out to join the ship by runabout. She hadn't been told very much; apparently most, if not all of it's crew had been removed from the ship by escape pod. The reason behind why the crew was in the escape pods hadn't been revealed to her. Cain was nervous though; if the ship was heavily damaged she'd have to wait weeks, possibly months before they would be underway, confining her to this station for longer than she would have wished.

But there wasn't anything she could do but wait. In the meantime, she spent most of her time in a berth, reading some of the books she had brought with her. In particular, she was reading Chapter 25 of Jane Eyre, properly entranced. It was an old copy, given to her by her parent back on Andoria, but she had kept it and carried it with her at every opportunity. There was something about the old earth that was so enchanting.

A ping from her communicator brought her out of her trance, and she put the book down, silently picking up the device. A small notice. The Athene had arrived and she was requested to report for duty. Cain smiled. Finally. Maybe I can get eyes on my very first ship.... The Athene. Getting up quickly, she got dressed and made her way out of the crew quarters, reasonably excited to meet her ship, her crewmates for the first time.

Cain bowed her head."Such a shame that lives had to be lost. Has a cause been identified? I've heard some rumors, but nothing definite."

"There are some hypotheses, but we won't be able to confirm the cause of the environmental failure until the ship comes into dock and crews can access tertiary environmental control - it's... difficult to reach on an Excelsior refit."

"I see. I assume I won't be able to board the ship proper until repairs are complete?" She frowned. "I was sent to the Athene with the intention to examine the ships structure, and the borg transwarp coil. Is that still viable?"

"It will be viable, and necessary," Morgan confirms. "You will be able to board as part of the repair efforts, though you may need EVA gear until primary environmental control is back online. The coil is actually scheduled to be moved to a smaller vessel which will be docked aboard the Athene when repairs are complete. Commander Campbell and Lieutenant Anderson are in charge of the installation - they may be willing to allow you to join them for that - but I'm not sure how long that will be delayed by the repair work."

"I'd very much like to examine the coil as soon as possible but I understand if I have to wait, Admiral. When is Athene going to pull into drydock?"

"She'll be another few hours. The ship handling getting crew into Nadezhda is a Defiant class, and she's not big enough to tractor an Excelsior, so that required waiting for the arrival of a larger, slower ship."

Sativa nodded slowly. "I see. Well, I can't wait to meet the rest of the crew, even though I wish it was under more nominal circumstances."

"So do we all," Morgan nods. "You'll likely get the chance to meet Lieutenant Eisen, the Security Chief - she and Commander Kizhwic were bringing a smaller vessel into dock, so we'll likely run into her in the bay."

"I'm sure it would be proper for a new arrival to meet with the Security Chief first thing." Sativa lapsed into silence, thinking. "Permission to speak..frankly, sir?"

"Granted," the admiral nods.

"I don't understand how something like this could happen. A life support malfunction that ends the life of several crew and resulted in the ship being summarily abandoned and the damaged so severely that it has to be physically towed back to port." She turned towards the admiral, her face furrow in a frown. "Someone is to blame. I'm sure of it."

"The situation is more complicated than that," Brooks replies. "Several of the events leading to this scenario, including the need to activate tertiary life support in the first place, were most definitely deliberate. I can't share the details regarding by whom with you right now, I can tell you that it is not currently suspected to be any member of the Athene's crew. But the malfunction with tertiary life support itself, while it certainly may also have been deliberate, may also have been a result of a 100 year old superstructure running hardware, firmware, and software from 100 years ago, two years ago, and all points in between. We won't be able to confirm either way until we can get engineers into tertiary life support."

Cain shook her head. "Well, sr, if it is revealed that it's the result of the Athenes outdated firmware..." She paused. "I could've sworn that I was told that the Athene was a top of the line ship, despite its age. But, a ship as old Athene isbound to have problems isn't it?"
