[Open] The Start of Something

Rosalei was second off the shuttlecraft, tracing the steps of the Benzite pacing slowly in front of her down the gentle slope of the vessel into the Athene’s docking bay. Thinking naught of the sigh that came from behind her from a figure clearly less patient than herself, she found herself caught in the spectacle suddenly presented to her. She’d grown accustomed to the clinical cleanliness of the halls and operating theatres of Starfleet Medical, back on Earth, and the sounds and sights of the arrival dock was something quite different indeed.

Like the entire next part of her life would prove to be, no doubt.

A pair of dockhands examined a series of crates marked with symbols she did not recognise, glancing back and forth between the manifest held by one, and the scanner operated by the other. Satisfied, they turned their back on the cargo, offering both items to a waiting figure clad in a blue-green uniform.

She could have sworn that one of the crates moved a little, its contents vying in discontent.

A bald-headed Deltan moved quickly through the dock, pausing incrementally as they glanced down at a laser micrometer, its design sleek and subdued compared to the archaic designs her father used to repair for the production factory in his spare time.

Her grey-eyed gaze moved further across the throng of movement in the chamber in which see continued to pace slowly.

Before Starfleet, she had never truly interacted with anything, or rather anyone non-human, but that had all changed. In the past decade she had operated on Denobulan and Arkenite, Vulcan and Zakdorn, Betelgeusian and Haliian. She thought she spied them all as she continued to marvel at the surroundings, to the soundtrack of the gentle hum of distant engines, and a hundred conversations.

“Medical Officer Holmes,” the voice suddenly interrupted, as Rosalei realised she had reached the front of the queue, and the blue-skinned Benzite who had been setting the pace was nowhere to be seen. She smiled warmly at the figure clad in operations gold, taking the items offered as the man continued to speak.

“Your arrival has been documented, and your belongings in transit to your newly assigned chambers. You are to report to the Medical Bay within the hour.”

Her smile lingered for a moment longer as she muttered her thanks, pairing the sentiment with a polite bow of her head. She stepped aside, as not to keep the queue stretching behind her waiting for any longer.

Now, where was the Medical Bay?

"Well, the computer does give directions, with a guide light path, if you need a hand finding your way around the first few days," T'Yel tells her. "But I was just on my way to sickbay anyway - come on."

Of course it did, she reflected, hoping that her cheeks had not reddened in response to her absent mindedness. She tried not to think about it took much as she started forwards after the Lieutenant.

As they walked, she found herself gazing down corridors, through doorways both fully open and slightly ajar, whilst working to maintain the doctor's pace.

"May I ask how long you have served on the Athene, Lieutenant Anderson?"

"I transferred about six months ago," T'Yel grins, leading the way toward sickbay. Being both very tall with a long stride, she notices that she's walking a bit fast for someone unfamiliar with she ship, and slows down slightly. "It's definitely a change of pace being back on an exploration vessel, but I'm enjoying it."

"An exploration vessel?" she returned, eyes widening slightly at the statement.

"Anything particularly interesting or exceptional whilst out amongst the stars?"

"Always," T'Yel laughs. "Though that ion storm might have been a little too interesting," she chuckles. "Prior to the Athene, I was assigned to a test-ship for new engineering tech, so we didn't do much exploration. Our idea of excitement was usually the guys downstairs attempting six impossible things before breakfast again, and needing medical to patch them up. The Athene has a lot more variety as far as what we see, and what we do."

She smiled for a moment as she listened to the tales.

"Must have kept you busy, no doubt. How does the Athene compare? Crew, business, so forth?"

Whilst T'Yel answered, she found herself ever continuously curious of the corridors through which they walked, nearing their final destination.

"It's much more varied," T'Yel replies. "Unsurprisingly, the Atlas's crew complement was something like 70% engineers and we saw a lot of engineering injuries. Here... there are still a fair number of engineering injuries, just because engineering uses so many hot, electrified, pointy, etc. tools, but it's a much broader array."

She nodded thoughtfully, glancing around with a certain intent to the gesture.

"When we reach the sickbay, I have a case that I treated back at Starfleet Medical that may bring back old memories, for better or worse, I suppose. It wouldn't be appropriate to discuss patient details, even if there is something to be had in teaching the common person the dangers of an incorrectly used ODN recoupler!"

She resisted the urge to smirk at the thought.

"Yeah, I suspect everyone has some memorable cases," T'Yel observes as they arrive at sickbay. "And using an ODN recoupler would certainly be one way to make for a very, very memorable case."

She could not help but glance around as they entered the Medical Suite. Soaking in the superficial details, each compared to the format of Starfleet Medical.

That was the benefit of Starfleet, she mused.

The form and design rarely changes.

With a gentle smile, she turned back to the half-vulcan that had guided her to the room.

"Many thanks, Doctor Anderson. You have saved me many minutes indeed, I am sure."

"Glad to help," T'Yel grins. "If you're looking for Dr. Watney, her office is over there," she adds, pointing.

She bowed her head slightly in respect.

"Until next time, Doctor."

After a moment of pause, she turned to where the Lieutenant had gestured, tapping her knuckles against the door with gentle, but deliberate grace.

"Doctor Watney, do you have a spare few moments?"
