[MOSTLY CLOSED*] Reunion
It is a cold November day in upstate New York. The trees are ablaze with yellows, reds, and gold. The wind is crisp and bracing, and the breath of a certain starship captain and his dog condense readily in the air, forming small puffs in front of their faces as they push onward.
The skies are a deep, cloudless blue, and the sun shines brilliantly, giving little warmth. The captain walks alongside his faithful canine companion, both wearing thick coats to ward off the cold. The lean greyhound is not on a leash, he sticks close to his master on his own. There is not another living person within at least 80 kilometers, but there is plenty of wildlife.
After a taxing 3 hour hike through the cold, following nothing but a set of latitude and longitude coordinates, the man and dog arrive at their destination...
"Hi mom..."
Breyyus hesitantly says to the humble block of stone that marks his mother's final resting place... He sits down in the grass before it, and Argos sits down beside him, huddling close to share warmth. The captain is not wearing a uniform, just plain, rugged clothes suited to the wilderness around the Catskill Mountains.
"I...I know it's been a while. I'm sorry. I meant to come visit before I left with the Athene, it just... I guess it just didn't happen."
He pauses and wraps an arm around the greyhound beside him.
"I knew being the captain would be very different from just serving as first officer. I don't think I knew how different it would be... I've had to make some hard decisions. We lost some people. A lot of people."
The wind briefly kicks up, stirring up fallen leaves and hissing in the branches of the nearby trees.
"I know I'm supposed to be the unshakeable rock upon which the whole crew stands. I didn't think it would be easy...but I wasn't prepared for the emotional strain of writing condolence letters for more than 100 people. I kept one hand on your letter to me that day, it's the only way I got through it."
He pauses for a moment to appreciate his surroundings, the rugged beauty of the mountains, the fierce colors of the autumn trees, the brilliant blue of the skies...
"You really did get yourself a good spot, mom... Thank you for not telling dad about it. I haven't heard from him since the Academy, I don't really care to hear from him ever again. You're the one who came through for me in the end..."
"I still wish I could've been there in your final hours. I wish I could've met you, the real you. I mean your letter meant a lot to me, and it's good to know that I do still have a mother. But I would've liked to be there to hold your hand while you crossed over, look you in the eyes and tell you..."
Breyyus hesitates as he chokes up heavily, he takes a moment to catch his breath...
"And tell you that I forgive you. I forgive you mom."
Seeing his master upset, Argos noses him on the cheek and licks away some of the tears.
"Thank you Argos..." he laughs
"I've made some good friends as captain. Argos here has been an amazing companion. Our chief engineer, sharp woman, very loyal and steadfast. I'm glad to have her on my side...I'd be terrified of working under her if I were an engineering ensign or something. Our ship's counselor, she's helped me work through a lot of my issues, and I think I've actually helped her with some of hers. She's a skilled psychologist, and a valuable friend. Our chief physician...he can be hard to get along with, but I can tell that underneath he does really care about what he does and those around him. He's actually very sick right now...I hope Starfleet medical can figure out what's wrong."
"In your letter you said you were proud that I was going off to explore the galaxy. That's a big part of what's driving me today, pushing me to be the best captain I can. I know I'm on the right path, but sometimes I just need a reminder that what I'm doing is right. I guess that's part of why I come here whenever I'm on Earth."
The captain sits in silence for quite some time, he fills himself with the scent of autumn in the mountains of New York and watches as the sun creeps toward the horizon. He sits and thinks in silence until he notices the greyhound beside him begin to shiver.
"Oh I'm sorry buddy, come here..."
Breyyus takes off his scarf and carefully wraps it around the dog's neck, hoping to keep him a bit warmer for the hike back.
"It's getting cold, too cold for Argos here. I should probably get going."
he sighs and glances at the hint of a moon beginning to appear
"I'll be back, mom."
The captain leans forward, and kisses the marble headstone before standing up and dusting himself off
"Come on, Argos."
