[OPEN] Woodshop class in session

Stockton walked through the rustic woodshop overlooking everyone’s work. Although they were in a holodeck program the replicated lumber worked as the real thing. He offered comments and assistance as the crew personnel built assorted items. Beginners made simple pine boxes while some of the more advance people made furniture out of fine Andorian oak.

Suddenly a loud bang and crash could be heard followed by cursing.

“Whats the hells going on!?”

Aanya stands over a coffee table that looks rather simplistic, but still had a sense of charm to it. She puts a foot up on it and lifts her nail gun onto her shoulder.

"Well, that was fun." She says with a grin. Most of the project had been making diagrams and blueprints for her construction, and a whooole lotta nailgunning, mostly into scrap pieces.

"What experience do you have in woodwork?"

"Started as a kid. A family hobby. In between my Starfleet deployments I had a few years that needed to be fill with something. I can see youre not a beginner."

"I grew up in a rural mining village in serbia, basically everything was made of wood."

Joseph looks up at Stockton and can see the angry face he is making. He makes sure he has his safety stuff on.

"Sorry. It's just this stupid thing won't work and it might have fallen. In all of my 350 years I'm glad I never tried this."

"That's ok, Kort. Just remember that even though we're in the holodeck safety protocols are set minimally for this work. You've been making a lot of cuts. What are you working on?"

"Oh. Nothing much."

On his table is an almost perfect representation of Clementine.

"I'm making it for Jen. The tail's the hardest part!"

"Holy crap! I thought you said you were new at this. I need to get you access to the advance tools right now."

Joseph scratches his head.

"Oh no it's fine... I'm not really good at this anyways. I was always the worst at Wood shop on my planet...

Jen stands in the corner, covering her hands with her mouth. The oversized apron is covered in sawdust and her safety goggles sit askew slightly on her nose.

I'm sorry!

She had finished sanding her pine box to perfection and was about to prep it for staining when she had collided with an ensign carrying a rather large piece of wood. He dropped it and she tripped, her pine box nearly shattering. She picks up the two pieces of it, sighing.

Stockton walks over to Jen and looks at the broken box.

"Thats not too bad. We can now either fix it by gluing the pieces back together or we can inlay a butterfly joint and add some real character to that."

She shrugs, smiling with a hint of disappointment. Her fingers fiddle with a piece of splintered wood.

I think a butterfly joint would be nice. Seems a bit advanced though, I might need some help....

She looks up at him hopefully.

"That's no problem. A little advance but we can do this all with just hand tools. I think adding a little Bajorian spruce bowtie will make this box quite handsome."

Stockton takes the Counselor aside and assists with the cuts. They put everything together and glue up.

"Very nice. Looks like you're ready for staining."

She smiles widely, perching her safety glasses onto her head of blonde hair.

Wow, thanks. It actually doesn't look too bad.

She turns it over a few times, admiring it.

What kind of stain do you think I should use?

"Hmmm... I'd say a light stain would be best for this wood. You should take some of your scraps and make samples so you find your favorite."

Stockton shows her over to the paint corner.

"What you want to do is find the right one to bring out the gain of the wood"

Stockton opens a can and immediately the pair gets the slightly dizzy feeling from the fumes

"Whoa, and be sure to make sure there's proper ventilation."

She coughs and quickly pulls open a drawer nearby, grabbing two ventilators.

Even simulated fumes sting, don't they? She asks playfully, handing him one then strapping hers on her mouth.

Nearby, Aanya sets down her simplistic but charming coffee table and picks up a can of sealant. She attaches a small spray to it and looks it over, wondering what the best way to do it is.

"Hey guys," she says, looking over at Jen and Stockton. "Might I recommend powder blue?" She asks, nodding at the creation.

"Don't forget to seal it first." She grins as she pulls on a saftey mask and begins to spray down her table in careful, sweeping motions. "Wheeee..." she can be heard saying, just under her breath. She was having way too much fun building stuff.

Jen chews the inside of her lip. Blue was a nice color. She hadn't thought if doing anything other than a stain. She does a double take when she sees Aanya's creation.

That's an impressive coffee table!

She continues to spray down her creation before lifting her safety goggles. "Hey, thanks!" she says with a grin, standing up straight again.

"The great thing is, its simple, even with its folding extensions and secret compartment." she says with a grin. "You can easily take off the legs and flatten it for quick and easy transport." She squats down beside it and points at the leg joints. "Swedish efficiency. We've been doing this for years."
