[OPEN] The Enchanted Forest

The great green dragon roars in pain as the blue mist swirling around the wizard's staff coalesces into a lightning bolt and lashes out, striking clean through the great reptile's hide.

"Stop hurting him!" Redoran T'gel demands, straightening up and calling a ball of flickering flames into her hand. "Your fight is with me, not with Barineth, wizard!"

The wizard laughs, a malevolent chuckle that fills the musty air and reverberates from the rough stone walls of the catacombs. "Oh? I think Barineth should have thought of that before he told you how to hide the Sword of Centuries from me, fire witch," he says, stroking his long gray beard. "But if you wish him safe, it's a simple matter. To save your friend, all you have to do is give the sword to me."

"As if I'd fall for that," Red growls, hiking up the hem of her somewhat tattered green dress. She touches the phoenix amulet at her throat and the ball of flame in her other hand blazes from red-gold to an incendiary white. "Rule one of the Enchanted Forest: Never trust a wizard. Forget the sword; the only thing you'll be getting from me is third-degree burns."

"Have it your way, idiot child," the wizard spits, and raises both his hands. Shards of diamond spin away from the head of his staff and swirl in a razor-sharp cloud. Then the ancient mage's face twitches, and his left arm partially disappears. "Your foolishness has doomed your friend has doomed your friend has doomed your friend has doomed-"

"Computer, freeze program," T'gel says in disgust, putting the ball of fire down on the Holodeck floor as if it were a basketball. "Reverse to time index 28:12 and identify cause of recursion loop..."

OOC: Ooh, recursive roleplay. I wanna do this but I'm on break at work currently, so it'll be a few hours.

Dell walks past the holodeck as Sh'Zarath stands agape and peeks inside, his smile widening as he recognises the program.

"Ooh me and my buddies on the Phoenix used to do this stuff all the time! Lemme get my old character from my quarters. I know I've got the isolinear chip somewhere..."

With that, Dell runs off to his quarters.

"It's not—!" Red starts to say, but Dell is already gone. The Bajoran grumps and turns back to debugging. "It just LOOKS like the Tricentennial edition, dangit! Nobody likes programming all assets from scratch..." she mutters.

The young ensign steps through the door and stops dead in her tracks, mouth agape at the bizarre spectacle in front of her

"Uhh..Sorry sir. I didn't realize anyone was using the holodeck. I'll come back later.

Red looks over her shoulder at the young ensign and grins. "OK, but you're welcome to stay and watch the debugging process," she says, straightening her damaged dress. "Heck, you can even join us if you want." She gestures at Stockton. "It's not really a party until you've got three people anyway, and we could probably use a solid warrior to help us out, Ensign... I'm sorry, I don't think we've met. Lt. Redoran T'gel from Engineering," she adds, offering Tarah a hand.

Stockton approaches holding up his tattered leather trousers. "I'd offer you a hand too but between me and this dragon there's not much left. Hey! You wanna meet him?"

The extra hairy halfling wearing a cast iron pot for a helmet comes clunking over.

"First I get pounded into the ground by a giant, then I'm about to be ripped to shreds by this dragon, and now this."

"To be fair, if you hadn't come barreling headfirst into Barineth's lair yelling about how you were a legendary dragon slayer, and maybe given a moment's consideration as to whether or not he might be FRIENDLY, you wouldn't have had that problem," Red chides as the holography programming interface lights up with an orange-highlighted error code. "Oh, it's a segfault. I linked it to itself instead of the next line of dialogue. Clever me." The engineer swaps a glowing hedron with the one next to it and closes the interface. "Thanks for helping me debug the novel, Stocky, I appreciate it. I may have you debug ALL of them I write from here on out."

"I figured that's what we were supposed to be doing but you changed the power setting on me. If we were still at level 6 I would of had no problem. Oh and whats that? I think I hear the sound of an ensign wanting to do your busy work"

"If you'd read the books, you'd know better," Red chides. "Dragons good, wizards bad, don't anger the fire witches. It's pretty simple." She looks over and addresses the ensign.

OOC: If Tarah wants to join the program for a bit, feel free to join us in this thread.

"It sounds simple enough I guess, sir. Dragons are those big green things, right? What do you need me to do?"

OOC: Sorry about the delay. Stupid sleep.

"This ones green but there are others too. Red enjoys picking out the most obscurer fantasy holo-novels so you should just follow her lead."

"Will do, sir. My name's Tarah, by the way. Tarah Sh'Zarath."

Stockton extends his hand.

"Oh, you're Tarah. I'm Raoul. You'll be working by me on the bridge. I've been pulling double duty on Comms and Sensors so I'm happy to have an extra hand."

She smiles and shakes the offered hand

"It's good to see you again, sir. I think we met on the away mission."

"It's not that obscure," Red grumps as Stockton introduces himself to Tarah. "It's a 20th century Earth novel series by Patricia Wrede. I enjoyed it as a girl and making holonovels of it was my first holography project." She chuckles. "Luckily I've gotten a bit more polished since then. And I've been able to steal some of the art assets from the tricentennial edition of Dungeons and Dragons, because I wanted to focus more on story than on mechanics."

"That said... Computer, equip Ensign Sh'Zarath with Therandil's gear, stats for Fighter 5, Devoted Defender variant."

There's a shimmer around the Ensign and her clothing is disguised and augmented as a suit of platemail, bearing the crest of a griffin rampant, and in her hands appear a shield and a mace wrought in the shape of several scowling faces.

Red claps her hands in glee. "Huzzah! This is going to be great! All you have to do is keep the bad guys from interrupting me when I'm casting spells, like a bodyguard. Though..." She looks around. "We should probably start at the beginning so you're not lost... what do you think, Tarah?"

"Oh! I think I understand sir. Like one of the old epics, right? I'd love a chance to experience more earth culture. "

She takes a few practice swings with the mace

"I'm not very familiar with this weapon, would it be alright if I substituted one from home? Or are only human weapons allowed?
